Two cutout newspaper articles on reverse indicate that the painting was commissioned by Eric J. Wien, General Agent of the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. and was hung in the agents office at 142 High St. Portland, Maine. The painting was commissioned in 1963. The painting was to express the perseverance typical of man in his efforts to overcome obstacles and to go on life’s way in spite of adverse condition. SIZE: 24-1/4″ x 36″. MARSDEN HARTLEY (American 1877-1943) MT. KATAHDIN NO. 1. Charcoal on paper scene shows an outline mountain range with tree in foreground. Housed in a modern wood frame with beige matte having a gilt edge. A “Janie C. Lee” gallery label on reverse. Unsigned. Note: When Caleb Scribner took Marsden Hartley to Katahdin Lake on October 10, 1939, Hartley carried with him an 11 x 14 inch sketchbook. Of the drawings that Hartley did during the eight days he stayed at Cobb’s Camps, five are known to be of the various camps where people stayed. Hartley did four drawings of the mountain, which he numbered 1 – 4. Of the two drawings from the same sketchbook which were not numbered one was given to his friend Carl Sprinchorn the day after Hartley returned to Patten on his way to Bangor and the other drawing is in the Hudson Walker Collection at the Weisman Art Museum. Drawings 2 and 3 were purchased by Hartley’s Niece Norma Berger as the last two transactions in Hartley’s Estate liquidation that ended in 1961. Their whereabouts are unknown today, but No. 4 now resides at Bates College Museum of Art in Hartley’s hometown of Lewiston, Maine, along with two smaller drawings of the mountain not from the sketchbook. Hartley referred to these drawings to make a series of 22 x 28 inch drawings in his Bangor studio which he then used as preliminaries for the large oils. SIZE: Sight: 10-1/2″ x 13-1/2″. MARSDEN HARTLEY (American 1877-1943) OLD MAID CROCHETING 1908. Graphite on paper drawing of a woman seated in a rocking chair crocheting in her lap with a basket of yarn on the floor. Inscribed lower left “Old Maid Crocheting”. Unsigned. Housed in a gilt wood frame with linen and gold liner. On reverse is a copy of the drawing “Old Main Mending” that is in the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Also on reverse are three gallery labels, including “Vance Jordan Fine Art Inc.”, “Babcock Galleries” and “C. Duncan Connelly”. Note: Due to the sale of a 1906 painting to Boston collector Desmond Fitzgerald, Hartley had enough funds to establish himself in the summer of 1908 in North Lovell, Maine, where he painted directly from the landscape until the autumn, when he started working from memory and imagination. It was at this time that Hartley found his own voice and produced a remarkable body of work and today, one can account for at least 70 oil paintings from 1908. However, he ran out of oil paints at one stage and probably was not able to replace them easily, as North Lovell was so remote. Thus, he turned to making a large number of drawings, primarily of people that he saw in the community, acquaintances, woodsmen and some self-portraits. These drawings are highly expressive and individualistic, as were his paintings. After this body of work was executed, he returned to painting and did not do drawings as finished works until the 1920s. One can see how he repeated certain motifs of the same figures so, not surprisingly, there are two versions of the old maid crocheting. The other one is in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum and is illustrated in Elizabeth Mankin Kornhauser’s “Marsden Hartley: American Modernist” and Donna Cassidy’s “Marsden Hartley.” SIZE: 11-3/4″ x 9″. MARSDEN HARTLEY (American 1877-1943) AFTERNOON HAZE 1907. Oil on board coastal scene shows a colorful seascape with waves against rock cliffs under a bright sun through haze. Signed lower right “Marsden Hartley”. Housed in a carved silver gilt modern frame with wide linen matte. On reverse is a Bates College loan agreement, also a conservation treatment report and more. Note: Hartley established a studio in Lewiston, Maine, at the end of 1906. The following spring he produced a number of landscape paintings from the motif, most of which are now lost, with the exception of Shady Brook at the Lewiston Library and one that surfaced recently and was sold by Christies. Things did not go well for Hartley’s hopes to find students and by June he was destitute He wrote to publisher Thomas Mosler for a job and was invited to Green Acre near Eliot Maine on the bank of the Piscataquis River. His job as groundskeeper no doubt left him a good deal of time to paint the surrounding landscape. We must bear in mind that Hartley was basically unknown as an artist at this juncture. At the end of the summer he had his first exhibition at the home of Mrs. Ole Bull which was a success; he sold a fair number of paintings, which gave him enough money to live that winter in Boston. We have no way of knowing how many paintings he produced in 1907 as very few have survived. However, one can account for at least 70 paintings and over 40 drawings in 1908. There’s no reason to believe that he destroyed any of his 1907 paintings that he did not sell. What happened to that body of work may very likely remain a mystery, as over a century has passed since they were painted. One very fine painting survived and is in the collection of the Baltimore Museum of Art. Also there is a photograph in the Archives of American Art of a painting quite similar to the Baltimore picture which was owned in New York in the mid-1950s. All of this makes Autumn Haze an extremely rare work in Hartley’s oeuvre. SIZE: 10-3/4″ x 12″. PROVENANCE: Mr. Sidney Osborne N.Y. & St. Catherines, Ont. (Osborne was a scientist and collector. Grant was one of the foremost landscape painters & commercial artists during the early part of the 20th Century. He was an illustrator for several New York magazines and his works include the first cover of “Popular Magazine”. Prior to his death he had been working with Lt. Edward Kirk of the Weehawken Police Department who was writing the history of Weehawken. Wright was helping in the gathering of data as well as the artist for all of the illustrations. Large unsigned and unframed oil on canvas winter scene shows a group of Pilgrims walking right to left on snow covered ground with trees. A small building can be seen in left background. The minister and wife lead a small group of women and children towards the church, led and flanked by men with guns. A copy of the photograph of the back before relining showing a canvas stamp of “P. DECHAUX & CO NEW YORK” accompanies painting. Another version of this painting titled “Pilgrims Going to Church” is in the collection of the New York Historical Society and done in the 1860’s, when he concentrated his work on early American Colonial history. It is believed that this painting was done at a different time, possibly after training in both England and Paris. There are differences in comparing this with the New York Historical example, including foreground trees, clothes and details. An elaborate and colorful interior scene has a large portrait in the background of a woman, decorative wall covering and a red curtain which is held aside of a window showing a landscape. Also the title and artist’s name with a number “7” in a circle. Another label from Young’s Pty. Ltd. Transporters of Fine Arts & Antiques. This painting was part of the Johnstone Gallery’s exhibition of October 30th-November 21st, 1970 entitled “An Experience of Paris” “Park/Cathedral/City” “Charles Blackman”. ROBERT MACFIE SCRIVER (American 1914-1999) “THE WINCHESTER RIDER”. Circa 1979. This limited edition example (173/250), Big Horn Foundry. The limited edition figural bronze titled: “The Winchester Rider” was commercially commissioned and based on the famous Winchester logo featuring a mounted frontiersman, running at a full gallop, carrying a lever action Winchester rifle. The integral base with sagebrush and cow skull in relief. Marked: 173/250 Bob Scriver/1979. Mounted on a faceted walnut plinth additionally mounted with a plaque inscribed with the title “The Winchester Rider”. Robert “Bob” Macfie Scriver (1914-1999) was a Montana sculptor who was born on the Blackfeet reservation of Anglophone Quebec parents. He specialized in western subjects, and his first efforts were small inexpensive souvenir wildlife figurines cast in plaster and air-brushed in natural colors. Entry into a statewide contest for an heroic-sized portrait of Charles M. Russell, a contest he failed to win, provided the impetus to become a “real” sculptor and attracted the support and guidance of Charlie Beil, a noted Canadian sculptor. Both men built foundries and cast their own bronzes, guaranteeing high quality. In the late 1950’s the Blackfeet tribe and Scriver conferred about a series of bronzes to be cast in heroic size. These included “No More Buffalo,” “Transition”, “The Return of the Blackfeet Raiders and the well known “Winchester Rider” are some of his finest work. His works are to be found in various museum collections including, but not limited to, The Whitney Gallery of Western Art at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, The Great Plains Art Museum, Montana Historical Society and the Rockwell Museum of Western Art in Corning, New York. Note: our understanding is that Kilbourne was commissioned to do this scene for a fishing catalog and that the arrangement was that he could continue to paint the scene but could not sign the work.
