ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN FREDERICK KENSETT (American 1816-1872) OVERLOOK, VERMONT. Oil on canvas scene shows two soldiers on a rock overlook looking down on a river valley with a tent encampment of soldiers. Adjacent to the overlook is another encampment of soldiers, a group being around the campfire. Early evening scene with setting sun sky. Signed lower right with initials and dated “71”. Housed in what appears to be its original gesso decorated gilt frame (with losses). “Theodore Kelley New York” canvas stamp to reverse. NOTE: From the collection of Col. G. Montagu Hicks who was Abraham Lincoln’s aide de camp during the latter part of the Civil War. Hick owned property called “The Overlook” in Overlook, VT. In researching Kensett does list a painting of this size titled “Overlook, Vt” which has not been located. SIZE: 14″ x 24″. CONDITION: Strip lined to reenforce tack edge, three small patches to reverse, one paint loss area to top edge, inpainting, otherwise very good. 9-26612 (3,000-5,000)
