JOHANN MONGELS CULVERHOUSE (American, Netherlands, 1820/25-1891/95) MIDNIGHT CRUISE. Oil on canvas moonlit scene shows a boat rowed by two fancy dressed men with a man having pole at bow. Five elegantly dressed men & women are seen under a canopy tent at center of boat with another man at rudder. They are going left to right up river with another boat ahead. They are going toward a house with lit windows which reflect on the water. Two opposing white swans are seen in the reflection of the moon which shines brightly in a blue & white cloud sky. Signed lower right and dated “186?”. Housed in a fine gilt wood fancy frame. SIZE: 28-1/2″ x 39-1/2″. CONDITION: Old wax relining, inpainting, very good. 9-25492 (4,000-6,000)
