GEORGE HENRY BOUGHTON (American, 1833-1905) PILGRIMS GOING TO CHURCH. Large unsigned and unframed oil on canvas winter scene shows a group of Pilgrims walking right to left on snow covered ground with trees. A small building can be seen in left background. The minister and wife lead a small group of women and children towards the church, led and flanked by men with guns. A copy of the photograph of the back before relining showing a canvas stamp of “P. DECHAUX & CO NEW YORK” accompanies painting. Another version of this painting titled “Pilgrims Going to Church” is in the collection of the New York Historical Society and done in the 1860’s, when he concentrated his work on early American Colonial history. It is believed that this painting was done at a different time, possibly after training in both England and Paris. There are differences in comparing this with the New York Historical example, including foreground trees, clothes and details. Ref: This painting and the two following paintings were purchased in Maine and thought to be survivors of the Bar Harbor fire of 1947. SIZE: 32″ x 54″. CONDITION: At one time this painting was cut from its stretcher and rolled (possibly losing its signature). It presently has been attached to a new larger canvas for mounting to stretcher, which could be reversed. Canvas shows paint loss. In need of complete restoration. 9-26755 (10,000-15,000)
