WALT KUHN (American, 1880-1949) CLOWN. This painting is very close to the painting sold by Sotheby’s Sale NY #7668 lot 55 titled “Roberto”. This large oil on canvas depicts Roberto seated with arms and hands gripped to front of bench. Signed center right “Walt Kuhn 1946”. An important work at a time when Kuhn was doing his finest paintings. A number of these clown paintings were sketched earlier in his career and finalized later. PROVENANCE: Vera Kuhn to benefactor who bequeathed the painting to the Sloan-Kettering Institute where it was sold to benefit the society of MSKCC. The top serving shelf is supported by two 20” life size seated hunting dogs. Inset in the back of the open area is a carved 14” doe/deer mount. Framed in a panel with fully carved oak leaves and acorns. The removable crest is pierce carved with grape leaves, grapes and scroll dfesign with a center carving of two hanging grouse. Below the bottom shelf is a carved pierced apron in between two blocked supports, which have floral carving in front. The top apron has floral and fruit carving with a central carving having a frog on a leaf. The top has a carved edge and block shaped top. EARLY TIFFANY STERLING PRESENTATION BOWL. This magnificent Tiffany sterling presentation bowl, marked on the underside “Tiffany & Co. 3692 Makers 4163 Sterling Silver 925-1000 M”. On the sides, inscribed “Miss Henrietta Appleby from the employees of R. W. Smith & Co.” On the reverse, a banner “Jany 6th, 1875” and cherub with anvil and hammer making the “chain of love”. The long bowl with a designed border at the top and having two large impressive cast handles of spread-wing swans. The bowl was a presentation for Henrietta on her birth. Henrietta Appleby was the niece of the famous Charles Appleby, military Aide de Camp of General Ulysses S. Grant during the Civil War. This sterling bowl is accompanied by an old Carte de Visite of her uncle, Charles Appleby. According to family information, R. W. Smith & Co. was a publishing company during the 19th Century. FABULOUS RUSSIAN TILT TOP PAINT DECORATED STAND. Eight sided top has hand painted scene of Russian wedding. Many people crowd dinner table while husband, wife and mother stand at end. A large serving tray with swan is being presented (this represents good luck and a lasting marriage because swans mate for life). Elaborate gilt costumes and tableware. Painting has fine craquelure and appears to be unsigned. The molded edge has gilt decorative edge. Interesting blocked and shaped post ending in four shaped curving legs ending in pad feet. Black paint with gilt decoration. Underneath top, below locking mechanism, is a Russian stamp with five round emblems and Russian words. 19th Century. Painting is after a painting by Makovsky. FINE ANTIQUE ENAMEL AND JEWEL FABERGE TYPE DECORATED FIGURAL MINIATURE CLOCK. A colorful silver rooster sits atop a carved pink quartz base and holds a round clock between head and tail. The round clock has Roman Numeral dial with gold colored metal center and white enamel behind gold numbers. The bezel is surrounded by forty-three round red stones, possibly rubies, (one missing). The clock has a case that is enameled with flower and leaf decoration in colors of green, blue, red and orange. The front bezel opens and a mechanism is hinge mounted and flips out of case. Watch type movement. Key wound (key not present). The rooster has colorful enameling to head and feathers. The sides are paved with cut red stones, possibly rubies, approximately sixty on each side. The silver body is decorated with feathers and appears to be unmarked. The pink quartz carved plinth stands 1-1/4” h. Possibly Russian. Certainly of good quality similar to work of Faberge. FINE RUSSIAN SILVER AND ENAMELED PICTURE FRAME. Silver easel type frame with wood backing and silver support. Oval shaped having gold ribbon crest. The oval sterling frame has inside 1” border, enamel decorated with blue and white flowers in four oval panels. In between are musical motifs against a white enameled background. INTERESTING SEMI-PRECIOUS STONE RUSSIAN ? PIPE. Fitted case holds a pipe made of different carved stone pieces. Including malachite, agate, quartz, amber? and five pieces of lavender rock. The silver trumpet shaped bowl has chase decoration and its tip is mounted with full cut colored stones. This is typical of what you might find in Russian stone carvings. SIZE: 8-1/4” l. FINE CARVED ONYX WALL PLAQUE WITH GREEK PHILOSOPHERS CAMEOS. Eight sided white onyx pierce carved frame has eight round areas surmounted with carved cameo profiles of what appears to be Greek philosophers. The frames center is indented with an eight sided edge with a large 4” carved relief cameo of a bearded man. The image is backed by a reverse painted black glass which has some cracking and chipping. The frame is mounted in a custom velvet lined glass display case, which has an easel back, which has become unfastened but is present. SIZE: 12-1/2” x 11” frame. Case is 14” x 12-1/2”. INTERESTING AND RARE WALNUT VICTORIAN FOLDING TABLE LABELED CLOWES & GATES MFG. CO. This rotary, adjustable, sliding top folding table was patented June 19th, 1877 and has a unique metal post which has several different adjustments which allow it to adjust up and down, angle the top and slide the top back and forth. The metal post is supported by four carved legs, which are hinged to fold onto one another. Rectangular top has molded edge. Two small drawers fit under top with spring clamp to hold drawer while tilting. Each drawer has paper label of manufacturer. One depicting the table flat, the other at angle. CONDITION: Case and table in generally very good condition, back corners of music box case have been reglued; cover plate around bell strikers missing two small fingers. SENSATIONAL MAJOLICA RORSTRAND PEDESTAL. Square top supported by four scroll corner decorated capital. Inset with four women’s profiles. An overhanging square molding over a long square tapered post. Decorated with colorful flowers and masks. The step base with quatrefoil style plate has four animal paw feet. Majolica type glazing in colors of blue, gold, greens and browns. A large and unusual piece of Rorstrand. The Rorstrand factory started in Stockholm in 1926 and has operated in different locations up until recently. JOSEPH DELANEY (American, 1904-1991) FACTORY TOWN. An interesting oil on masonite painting depicting various stages in the development of an industrial town or state. Various parts of the painting depict pivotal points of a town in transition. Included are the farmer in the field, production line manufacturing, education through classroom, gathering of people around table and a large river damn. Delaney was an African-American artist who spent much of his time in and around New York City and was a student of Thomas Hart Benton. Painting is pencil signed on back top left of masonite. HOEY IMPROVED COIN SORTER. Oak case manufactured by the Rochester Novelty Works, Rochester, New York. Large table top machine has beveled edge cover with two holes for dropping coins. The coins go through a hopper into a slotted six sided drum, which filters the coins into different sizes and drops them into the appropriate drawer. Probably works as good as modern machines. LEATHER CASED MINIATURE BRACKET CLOCK. The original shaped tooled leather gilt decorated case has front two doors that open to house a small clock. A maker’s name and address is printed on the satin interior but it is illegible but the address is 582 Fifth Ave. New York. The small brass clock has engraved words on front bezel housing “Pour Toujour a Jamais”. By opening the front door the small round French clockworks comes with it. Key wound movement. Young girl with bare feet stands beside doctor along with an elderly man with a cane. Older lady is seen in front of fireplace mantel seated in a large rocker. Signed lower left “W. Granville Smith”. Housed in what appears to be the original black stained oak frame with silver liner. Watercolors of black, white, tan and gray. Most likely an illustration for a magazine or a newspaper of the time. FINE FOLDING TWO PART CHILD’S DOLL TRUNK. Two identical halves hinged, which have straps and lock. Outside has tin panels which have dot bead decoration of stars in circles.
