WALTER GRANVILLE SMITH (American, 1870-1938) THE DOCTOR’S VISIT. Watercolor on paper interior scene of a four person black family with doctor visiting. He sits in a chair opposite a young woman who is crouched beside him. He is looking at a pocket watch while holding her left wrist, presumably checking her pulse. Young girl with bare feet stands beside doctor along with an elderly man with a cane. Older lady is seen in front of fireplace mantel seated in a large rocker. Signed lower left “W. Granville Smith”. Housed in what appears to be the original black stained oak frame with silver liner. Watercolors of black, white, tan and gray. Most likely an illustration for a magazine or a newspaper of the time. The black family portrayed makes this a desirable example of this artist’s work. SIGHT SIZE: 8-3/4” x 12-3/4”. CONDITION: Very good. 9-95265 (3,500-4,500)
