FABULOUS RUSSIAN TILT TOP PAINT DECORATED STAND. Eight sided top has hand painted scene of Russian wedding. Many people crowd dinner table while husband, wife and mother stand at end. A large serving tray with swan is being presented (this represents good luck and a lasting marriage because swans mate for life). Elaborate gilt costumes and tableware. Painting has fine craquelure and appears to be unsigned. The molded edge has gilt decorative edge. Interesting blocked and shaped post ending in four shaped curving legs ending in pad feet. Black paint with gilt decoration. Underneath top, below locking mechanism, is a Russian stamp with five round emblems and Russian words. 19th Century. Painting is after a painting by Makovsky.
