WALT KUHN (American, 1880-1949) CLOWN. This painting is very close to the painting sold by Sotheby’s Sale NY #7668 lot 55 titled “Roberto”. This large oil on canvas depicts Roberto seated with arms and hands gripped to front of bench. Signed center right “Walt Kuhn 1946”. An important work at a time when Kuhn was doing his finest paintings. A number of these clown paintings were sketched earlier in his career and finalized later. PROVENANCE: Vera Kuhn to benefactor who bequeathed the painting to the Sloan-Kettering Institute where it was sold to benefit the society of MSKCC. Housed in what appears to be its original flat wood frame with linen liner. SIZE: 36” x 24”. CONDITION: Very good with some inpainting to bottom area. 9-95973 (10,000-20,000)
