“MURF THE SURF” (American, 20th Century) HIGH AND DRY. Watercolor scene shows boat nestled amongst dune grass with mooring post. New England farmhouse is seen through misty background. Signed lower right “J.R. Murphy ’76”. Jack Roland Murphy was one of this century’s most notorious jewel thieves. His life was portrayed in 1975 by Robert Conrad in the movie “Murf the Surf”. He painted in and out of prison. He was responsible for stealing the Star of India, the DeLong ruby and the Eagle diamond amongst others. Housed in a modern metal frame with triple matte.
