AMERICAN SAW HANDLED PERCUSSION PISTOL ATTRIBUTED TO THE GEORGIA SCHOOL.
NSN. Cal. 45. 10″ full oct unmarked rifled bbl. The stock is wedge bound to the bbl and has seven silver inlays. The inlay opposite the lock depicts two engraved birds. The percussion lock is marked “E.B. WEED WARRANTED”. A similar pistol marked “E.B. WEED WARRANTED” is pictured in an article entitled “The Panelled Buttplate School of Southern Kentuckies” by James A. (Arnie) Dowd II published by The American Society of Arms Collectors. That pictured pistol is in the University of Texas Memorial Museum collection in Austin, Texas. CONDITION: Fine condition with all orig parts. Hammer screw is a replacement. EARLY SINGLE SHOT PISTOL MARKED “H DERINGER PHILADA”.
NSN. Cal. 45. This is thought to be an early Henry Deringer measuring 8-1/4″ overall with 3-7/8″ bbl with 2 platinum bands, horn tip. Only markings on iron mounted gun are “H DERINGER / PHILADA”. CONDITION: Very good overall. Appears orig and complete. Iron is a mottled grey/brown patina with pitting. Silver thumbplate and key-way escutcheons have silver/grey patina. BRACE OF DERINGER PERCUSSION PISTOLS.
1) GEO GILLESPIE PERC DERRINGER.Cal. 44. Overall 6″. Breech 7/8″. 2-3/4″ bbl. Nice condition Deringer marked Gillespie on lock and breech. The pistol has German silver mounts. Trigger guard and lock are engraved. George D.H. Gillespie worked in New York from 1848-1870. Bbl finish in plain browning without striping. Six groove rifling. CONDITION: Pistol is in fine condition with all orig parts. Mechanics are fine. Lock is crisp and tight. 2) DERINGER PERC PISTOL. Cal. 44. Overall 7-3/4″. Breech 3/4″. 4″ bbl. This percussion Deringer pistol is marked “DERINGER PHILADEL’A” on its lock and on the top flat of breech. The left hand side flat of the breech is worn smooth. Pistol has German silver mounts with an iron trigger guard. The pistol has no ramrod entrance furrel. Many copyists used an exact copy of Henry Deringer’s name stamp or a close imitation. CONDITION: Pistol is in fair condition. Mechanics need attention. Lock does not work properly. Hammer is a replacement. RARE PERCUSSION SUPERIMPOSED TWO SHOT PISTOL.
Cal. .30. 5″ full oct, unmarked bbl. Curly maple stock, iron backstrap and trigger guard with brass buttcap and nose cap. This unusual pistol is designed to shoot 2 loads from one bbl using 2 locks and 1 trigger. Multiple shot pistols of this type are very rare. CONDITION: Very good with a small amount of wood filler between the trigger and rear of lock on left hand side. The grip was checkered but has nearly been worn off. PAIR OF AMERICAN POCKET PISTOLS.
1) STOCKING & CO PEPPERBOX. SN 68. Cal. 31. This is a scarce pepperbox made in Worcester, Mass. with unusual cocking spur on hammer which is marked “PATENT SECURED 1848”. 6-shot 4″ bbl cluster. There is agent mark on one bbl flat “SUTHERLAND” (probably Richmond, VA). Accompanied by Mr. Ballard’s hand drawn display card. PROVENANCE: Lifetime collection of Roger Ballard. CONDITION: Good to very good overall. Metal is overall mottled dark grey patina with pitting, markings discernible. All matching with well fit well patinaed grips. Mechanically fine with clear pitted bore. ESA 2) SHARPS PEPPERBOX. SN 4892. Cal. 30. This is a nice example of an ivory gripped nickel plated, 4-bbl pepperbox with standard 3″ cluster. Sharps patent mark and address are found on either side of frame. Accompanied by Mr. Ballard’s hand drawn display card. PROVENANCE: Lifetime collection of Roger Ballard. CONDITION: Fine overall. Gun retains 95% plus old re-plated surface. Markings are crisp and discernible as are matching SNs. Grips are well fit with ivory patina. Mechanically fine with crisp bores. UNIQUE ANTEBELLUM AMERICAN MADE DOUBLE BARREL BRASS FRAMED PISTOL WITH BRITISH 2-BARREL PERCUSSION PISTOL.
1) F.A.S. PERC 2BBL KY PISTOL. NSN. Cal. 32. This unique pistol measures 8-1/2″ overall with solid cast brass frame with integral bbls, iron trigger guard and backstrap both engraved with animals and signed what appears to read “C.G.GUSTASSON”. A set of initials are also engraved on top of bbls “FAS”. CONDITION: Very good overall. Brass has light mustard patina with discernible engraving with numerous small cosmetic blemishes expected after 150 years. Burl stock has contemporary brass repair made to left side with same patina as rest of gun. Iron is cleaned with staining and pitting but engraved patterns are mostly discernible. Mechanically fine with clear smooth bores. 2) BRITISH PERC 2 BBL PISTOL. NSN. Cal. about 40. Bbls 4-1/2″ rnd with smooth bores, and bead front sight. Iron boxlock action with center mounted hammers. Iron trigger guard has an engraved 8-pointed star. Unique burlwood tree stump style grip has added red and black stain finish. CONDITION: Bbl and action finish has faded to light brown patina. 1) UNK PERCUSSION PISTOL.Cal 50. Heavy almost 2-1/2 lb Kentucky-style pistol with back-action St. Louis made lockplate and bbl is in style and caliber of St. Louis Plains rifles. CONDITION: Good to very good overall. Bbl has overall brown pitted patina, iron lock and trigger guard and screws are a smooth mottled gray. Brass pipes and ramrod tip have mixed brass patinas. Stock has glued crack repairs and several hairlines. Mechanically fine with pitted rifled bore. 2) SPANISH MIQUELET CONV. NSN. Cal. 24 bore. Percussion conversion of Spanish Miquelet. 12″ overall with 6-3/4″ slightly swamped bbl, 4″ belt hook, brass mounted. CONDITION: Good to very good. Iron has mixed gray patina. Belt hook and ram rod are new additions as are stamped markings on stock. Mechanically fine, pitted smooth bore. 3) UNATTRIBUTED PERC KY PISTOL. NSN. Cal. 36. Very plain Kentucky style pistol 10″ overall with 5-3/8″ bbl apparently cut from rifle, trade lock, iron mounted with no provision for buttcap. CONDITION: Good as configured. RARE PAIR OF CASED ALLEN AND THURBER UNDER HAMMER “POCKET RIFLES”.
SN 71/71. Cal. 32. This is the only pair of matching 7″ bbl, “E. ALLEN / GRAFTON / MASS”, “POCKET RIFLE / CAST STEEL WARRANTED” engraved under hammer pistols we are aware. Matching number “71”, these guns made circa 1840 with saw handle type bag grip, with German silver escutcheons. This pair is in beautiful condition with a custom made hinged contemporary case, chiseled from solid piece of wood, fitted with nipple wrench, ball mold, brass powder flask, power measure, vent pick, 2 packs of caps, orig balls, and cleaning tool. CONDITION: Guns are matching in very good to fine condition with smooth gray metal overall. Well fit stocks, hand worn patina. Matching assembly or SN are found on frames, bbls and triggers externally. Markings are crisp, mechanically fine with crisp rifled bores. UNIQUE CIRCA 1840 UNDERHAMMER PISTOL, PROBABLY SOUTHERN, INSCRIBED TO A PREACHER.
NSN. Cal. 36. 10-1/2″ overall with 6″ oct bbl with fixed rear sight on tang and protected German silver blade front sight. Maple grips have central decorated iron band with inset 8-pointed silver stars, the right side terminating in a 1-1/2″ belt hook. 14 other small silver insets are found in wood. This most unusual underhammer has unique mechanism with long spring hammer that is operated by pulling trigger and extension of trigger pulls hammer down and is finally released when extensions length is passed by bar above trigger. Gun is still mechanically functional, quite unique and made by a very resourceful hand. Gilted brass band and braided insets also at breech and center of bbl has silver inset plaque banded by gilt brass, inscribed “REVd KIRKPATRICK”. CONDITION: Good overall. Gun appears all orig and complete. Unique hammer and trigger slightly loose, but as noted, still quite functional. Iron overall is dark grey/patina with staining and light pitting. Stocks are well fit with large hairline crack on right side, slightly shrunk with hand worn patina, all insets intact. NSN. Cal. 40. Bbl is 15″ rnd with oct shank and smooth bore. Dovetail mounted brass blade front sight with elevator adjustable V notch rear sight. Under-hammer percussion action. Walnut saw handle stock with brass butt strap, trigger plate and trigger guard. Stock is fastened by through bolt from rear. Hardwood ramrod held by two brass pipes. Left side of bbl has crude hand stamped marking “N. KENDALL”. CONDITION: Bbl finish has faded to gray with spots of very light pitting. Brass straps have some aged tarnish. Grip has chipped and worn finish with scratches and marks, having a crack extending forward from through bolt area. Mechanics are functional. 1) ETHAN ALLEN POCKET RIFLE. SN 1. Cal 32. Bbl 5-1/2″ rnd with facet at transition to oct shank. Iron box action with center mounted under hammer and trigger. Action has floral engraving. Top strap is marked “E. Allen / GRAFTON / MASS” and “POCKET RIFLE / CAST-STEEL / WARRANTED”. Small brass blade front sight with v-notch rear fixed sight. Walnut saw handle grip with German silver escutcheons. Upper portion of grip has small circular decorations. Bottom flat of bbl is marked with assembly no. “1”. CONDITION: Good. Metal finish has faded to even brown patina showing spots of light pitting. Grip shows scattered handling marks. Mechanics are functional. Dark pitted bore has partially discernible rifling. 2) EARLY AMERICAN PERC UNDERHAMMER PISTOL. NSN. Cal 40. Bbl is 5-1/2″ oct. Small blade front side with u-notch rear sight. Action is contained between iron grip straps with plain trigger and unusually large underhammer with cocking spur. 1-pc hardwood grip. Right side has curved German silver reinforcement plate fastened by 3 screws. Hardwood ramrod held on iron under rib by 2 iron pipes. Many pistols of this style were manufactured in Vermont. CONDITION: Very good. Metal finish has faded to mottled gray patina showing small dents and spots of pitting. Grips have dark worn appearance with handling marks having crack through right side near butt with small cracks and chips along top strap and bbl plate. Mechanics are functional. Dark bore has intact rifling and shows spots of pitting. 3) UNIDENTIFIED PERC UNDERHAMMER PISTOL. NSN. Cal. 36. 10″ overall with 5″ oct bbl, unmarked and typical of other New England made examples. CONDITION: Good to very good overall. Gun appears orig and complete with addition of a couple of restored screws. Metal is grey/brown overall. Mechanics fine with sharp rifled bore. 4) ANDRUS & OSBORN PERC UNDERHAMMER PISTOL. SN 320. Cal. 28. 10-1/2″ overall. German silver mounted with 17 inset German silver stars in oct bbl housing and breech. 5 German silver bands. Top bbl flat is marked with an American eagle and “ANDRUS & OSBORN / CANTON CONN.” Flip-up tang peep sight, fixed rear sight and tiny blade front sight on raised ring of cannon bbl muzzle. Gun is also stamped “CAST STEEL” on left side. CONDITION: Very good overall. Metal is a mottled grey overall with staining and pitting. Markings are all easily discerned. German silver mounts and binding well fit in varnished bag-grip stock. RARE AND UNIQUE “WHITLOCK’S PATENT” UNDERHAMMER PERCUSSION FOWLER WITH GOLD AND SILVER DAMASCENE BARREL.
NSN. Cal. 42 Bore, 48 Cal. This is an interesting and fine looking unique longarm which is fully functional and bbl is embellished with gold and silver Damascene decoration. We have not encountered this unusual long spring underhammer mechanism before which is marked in raised cartouche on the spring hammer retained trigger guard “WHITLOCKS / PATENT”. 48-1/2″ overall, 34-1/4″ rnd bbl with wedding rings and raised Indo-Persian style breech ring with sight notch and silver blade front sight. 90% of exposed bbl service has gold and silver Damascene decoration. CONDITION: Very good overall. Gun appears orig and complete. Iron is dark with pitting, especially buttplate. Gold and silver highlights are 50-60% intact as can be seen in photos. HEAVY BARREL SCOPED CIVIL WAR ERA UNDERHAMMER TARGET RIFLE.
NSN. Cal. 45. 45″ overall, not including false muzzle or starter with 29″ 22-1/2 lb oct bbl marked “REMINGTON / CAST STEEL” on bbl flat under 30″ steel tube scope sight. This gun is very similar to examples known to be used in the Civil War and a similar weapon is on display at the Gettysburg National Park Museum. Accompanied by 4-pin 1-1/4″ false muzzle and a 4″ brass bodied fitted starter. Bbl is mounted on a heavy 4″ dovetailed support near muzzle. CONDITION: Very good overall. Bbl has traces of orig brown and is an overall plum patina with staining and pitting. Hammer has old braised repair and stock has crack repair at wrist. Optics appear very good and clear. BIG BORE HEAVY BARREL PERCUSSION PLAINS RIFLE.
NSN. Cal. 54. Weighing in at just over 13 lbs, this 32-1/2″ oct bbl, 2-key half-stock rifle with set triggers would have been good for shooting buffalo. Gun is totally unmarked with exception of lightly engraved lock, breech, patchbox and trigger guard. There is a 2-3/4″ German silver eagle inset on cheekpiece. Our consignor attributes this gun to Tristan Campbell of St. Louis, an employee and later partner of Samuel Hawkens. CONDITION: Good overall. Iron is overall mottled grey with pitting. Two iron ramrod pipes are re-soldered. Cone and set screw are replaced so gun is functional. German silver escutcheons and nosecap cleaned with grey patina. RARE 3-BARREL REVOLVING RIFLE MADE BY H. V. PERRY, FREDONIA, NEW YORK.
NSN. Cal. 36. Overall 44″, this is a very distinct German silver and steel mounted rifle with fish-belly stock and back action lock. 28″ bbls are rotated by hand and locked and released by a knurled button on top of tang. Bbls are each marked “B. LOSEY / CAST STEEL” near breech and one bbl marked “H.V. PERRY / FREDONIA / NY”. Benjamin Losey is listed as a gunsmith at Mott’s Corner, NY from the late 1840’s. H. V. Perry is listed as gunmaker in Fredonia from 1852-1865 when this curiosa was made. CONDITION: Good to very good overall. Metal is a mixed grey/brown overall with pitting especially at breech. Iron ramrod, rear thimble had been crudely re-attached with lead solder covering a portion of one of Losey’s bbl markings. Hammer appears replaced or repaired and not engraved like balance of iron hardware, though German silver mounts are also plain. Well figured stock has hand worn patina a couple of small crack repairs between lock and breech. There’s also a hairline at wrist. Mechanics are functional including bbl lock. CURLY MAPLE FLINTLOCK KENTUCKY RIFLE BY HENRY NOLL FRANKLIN COUNTY PA.
NSN. Cal. 54. Overall 56-1/4″. Buttplate 4″ x 1-1/4″. 40-3/4″ full oct rifled bbl signed “H. Noll”. Curly maple stock is not carved but is sound throughout. 4-pc engraved brass patchbox has four piercings and finial is similar to gun #573 in Chandler’s 1972 Kentucky Rifle Patchboxes and Barrel Marks. Flint lock is engraved and appears to be orig flint. Rifle has dbl set triggers. Bbl is held to stock with wedges. Large silver cheekpiece inlay engraved with American Eagle is common on Franklin County guns. CONDITION: Rifle is in fine condition. Mechanics are functional. Lock and patchbox are in working order. Stock has dents and scratches consistent with age but there is no evidence of wood replacement. There is a crack running form front screw of sideplate to trigger guard. INCISED CARVED FLINTLOCK KENTUCKY RIFLE, POSSIBLY BY SIMON MILLER, HAMBURG, CIRCA 1800.
NSN. Cal. 42. 54″ overall, 38-1/2″ oct bbl with silver blade front sight with punch dot and stitch decoration engraving on top flat. Gun is brass mounted with 16 silver inlays including a well executed engraved new moon on the cheekpiece. 4-pc pierced patchbox and set triggers. There is a brass vent pick holder under cheekpiece. This is a good looking gun with minimal conservation noted. PROVENANCE: Nick Penachio Collection, 2001; Outstanding estate collection of Confederate and historical arms of Morris Racker, 2001. CONDITION: Very good overall. Iron is overall brown with staining and pitting. Stock is sound with restoration noted around the lock and overall re-varnished. Ketland lock is orig flint, but may be replaced. Sideplates and other brass mounts appear all orig, having a mix of light to medium mustard colored patinas. Silver inlays have grey/silver patina. EXCEEDINGLY RARE (1 OF 2 KNOWN) FLINTLOCK KENTUCKY SMOOTH RIFLE SIGNED BY JOHN YOUNG, EASTON PA.
NSN. Cal. 54. Overall 60-1/4″. Buttplate 4-1/4″ x 1-3/8″. 45-1/2″ full oct smooth bbl signed “John Young”. This is one of only 2 known signed John Young Rifles! This smooth rifle has a 2-pc brass nicely engraved patchbox, the finial of which has four piercings similar to the John Young shown on the first page of the article “The Young Family of Gunsmiths” in The Kentucky Rifle Association, Vol. 24 No. 2. The cheek is decorated with a silver 8-pointed star within an oval, customary for the Young family. The wrist is decorated with a 1-1/4″ oval silver inlay. CONDITION: Fair condition due to 30″ of forend wood having been replaced. There is also wood replacement between the lock and bbl tang. The lock is not working and needs adjustment, otherwise this is a very attractive and exceedingly rare gun with a great look to it. NSN. Cal. 65. This well made brass mounted 54-3/4″ overall, 39-1/2″ 2-stage bbl is dated “1826” at breech. Lock marked “SHARPE”. Brass mounts are lightly engraved as is lock. Right side of stock has inset 4-1/2″ silver presentation plaque with eagle holding banner reading “Awarded to JACOB W VAN DOORN SERGt / by the 7TH COMPANY NATIONAL GUARDS COMMANDED BY / CAPT. CHARLES B. SPICER in the 27 REGT N.Y.S.A. for / his superior skill at target firing Aug 16 1826”. Bbl is retained by 3 numbered brass keys with silver escutcheon plates. HIGHLY INLAID CURLY MAPLE HUNTINGTON COUNTY KENTUCKY RIFLE ATTRIBUTED TO JOSEPH DOUGLASS.
NSN. Cal. 54. Overall 52″. Buttplate 3-3/4″ x 3/4″. 37″ full oct heavy unsigned rifled bbl with engraving front and rear of rear sight. 28 silver inlays. 4-pc wonderfully engraved brass patchbox with three piercings. The nicely engraved sideplate has two piercings. Joseph Douglas was a major gunsmith in Juniata Twp., Huntington County. He had a wonderful eye for architecture and was a marvelous engraver. CONDITION: This rifle is stated as good condition due to the replaced lock and the minor wood repair. Otherwise the gun is in fine condition throughout. NSN. Cal. 50. Overall 55″. Buttplate 4″ x 1-3/8″. 40″ full oct unmarked and unsigned smooth bore bbl. 2-pc engraved brass patchbox with fleur-de-lis finial, similar in shape to later Moll rifles. Cheekpiece inlay is moon shaped with a face looking upward. Typical Berk’s County shaped brass sideplate. Orig flint lock signed “ROSS”. CONDITION: Lock is mechanically sound. EARLY MAPLE STOCKED FLINTLOCK KENTUCKY FOWLER ATTRIBUTED TO PETER YOUNG, EASTON PA GUNSMITH.
NSN. Cal. 58. Overall 60-1/2″. Buttplate 4-1/4″ x 1-3/4″. 45-5/8″ oct to rnd unsigned smooth bbl. This Fowler has a 2-pc brass patchbox with a Philadelphia style engraved pineapple on its finial. 10-3/8″ brass trigger guard also features the engraved Philadelphia style pineapple, often used by Peter Young. The flint lock is engraved and marked “warranted” and the Fowler has a curled trigger typical of earlier guns. Bbl is pinned to the stock with oval brass inlays on each side of the forend where pinned. The Young family had connection in Philadelphia which probably accounts for the Philadelphia pineapple decorations. The Young family was active in Easton, PA for many generations and their guns are sought after by collectors. CONDITION: Fair, due to stock having been stretched, otherwise in very good condition. LEHIGH COUNTY PA FLINTLOCK RIFLE ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN MOLL.
NSN. Cal. 41. Overall 63″ . Buttplate 4-1/8″ x 1-3/4″. 48″ full oct unmarked rifled bbl. Rifle is curly maple stocked with no carving and 2-pc brass fleur-de-lis patchbox is characteristic of John Moll’s style and is engraved with a “PB”. The studded brass trigger guard, the sheathed buttplate and 5″ arrowback sideplate are all characteristic of Lehigh county style. 2″ toeplate is nicely engraved. The 9″ brass saddleplate is not common to Moll rifles but has been used in the Lehigh County area. Rifle has an oval silver inlay at the wrist which is engraved “GW”. The long saddle plate and large flat arrowback sideplate are more typical of guns made in northwest section of Lehigh County, PA. CONDITION: 18″ forend wood is replaced along with 12″ of bbl. Lock hammer screw needs repair. Otherwise, the rifle is in very good condition throughout. Good mechanical function, lock functions. 52367-2 (2,000-3,000) – Lot 3299

RARE FULL STOCK FLINTLOCK KENTUCKY RIFLE MADE BY ROBERT STERLING, NEWBURGH, NEW YORK.
NSN. This is an aesthetically pleasing full stock Kentucky signed “R. STERLING NEWBURGH”. 55″ overall, 40″ oct bbl, 50 cal, rifled bore. Robert Sterling is an obscure New York gunsmith who at one point, in the mid 1840’s was Mayor. Gun exhibits pierced patch box, brass mounted with checkered wrist and German silver thumb plate. PROVENANCE: Outstanding estate collection of Confederate and historical arms of Morris Racker. CONDITION: Good to very good overall, as restored. Several insets around lock and repaired crack at wrist wood inset at toe. Probably re-conversion with replaced lock escutcheon.
