EXTREMELY FINE MODEL 1880 US ARMY HUNTING KNIFE WITH ORIGINAL SCABBARD.

SN 774. Surplus condition with near new blade of the brass mounted variety with Watervliet Arsenal scabbard. This is the first official Army knife made after the Ames Rifleman’s Knives, 1849. These Pattern 1880’s were made at the Springfield Armory and are so marked with 8-1/2″ x 2″ blades. Knife was designed for the armies in the West for “all purposes”. PROVENANCE: The collection of Robert Roughton. CONDITION: Very fine overall. Blade retains most of its orig luster with old cosmoline with light staining and pinprick pitting. RARE AND EXTREMELY FINE TYPE II MODEL 1887 US HOSPITAL CORPS KNIFE.

16-3/4″ overall, 12″ blade etched “HOSPITAL CORPS. / U.S. ARMY”. Only 406 knives of this variety were made in 1892 by Springfield Armory. The earlier version Type I with minor variation is equally rare with only 650 examples made. The principle design of this knife was for Corpsmen to clear brush to quickly establish field hospitals and for cutting branches for making splints. Both examples are quite desirable in high condition, especially in orig Watervliet Arsenal scabbard. PROVENANCE: The collection of Robert Roughton. CONDITION: Very fine overall. Blade retains most of its orig luster with well discerned edged panel with scattered staining. *RARE WINCHESTER MODEL 1885 SINGLE SHOT SCHUETZEN RIFLE WITH STEVENS TELESCOPE.

SN 87586. Cal. 38/55. 30″ no. 5 bbl. Full blue finish. Straight grain American walnut stocks with checkered pistol grip, cheekpiece and gunmetal Schuetzen butt. Bbl shows 2-line Winchester address marked in front of rear sight mortise. Cal. is marked at breech. Front sight is of globe type that is adjustable for windage. Rear sight mortis contains spirit level. Bbl shows no. 5 stamped on bottom in front of forend. This is a very rare size bbl for this model. Receiver is mounted with a bernier tang sight. Rifle has a sgl set trigger and a standard operating lever which is also rare. SN is stamped on lower tang behind lever with patent date stamped under it. Tang sight was not removed. Telescope is marked “J.Stevens Arms Company no. 368”. CONDITION: Very good to fine. Bbl retains 80% somewhat dull blue finish with high point wear and a few small dents. Markings are clear. Front sight is very good. Scope blocks have been installed. Front block obliterates part of the address. Spirit level is good. Bore is bright with strong rifling. Receiver retains 80% bright blue finish with minor scratches and handling marks overall. Hammer and lever retain generous traces of case color finish with the balance being a silver grey patina. Set trigger functions. Tang sight is very good with considerable blue. Stocks are very good, somewhat undersized, and have been completely refinished at some point. Checkering has been recut. There is a stain on the left side of buttstock. Buttplate is about fine with a deep mustard patina. Ebony insert on schnabel forend is very good. Telescope is very good and retains 50% of blue finish. Optics are clear. Markings are clear. Mechanics are crisp. *HIGHLY DESIRABLE WINCHESTER MODEL 1885 SGL SHOT SCHUETZEN RIFLE CUSTOMIZED BY H.M. POPE WITH J.W. FECKER TELESCOPE.

NSN. Cal. 22. 29-3/8″ rnd bbl. Full blued finish. Stocked with quarter-sawn birds eye maple. Forestock is full length with brass cap. Buttstock has cheekpiece, Schuetzen buttstock and patchbox on right side. Operating lever has maple handle that is checkered at the rear. Bottom tang of buttstock has an engraved finial extending forward. Schuetzen butt appears to be aluminum. Receiver has Stevens sight mount attached on left side that mounts a Marble-Goss receiver sight. Forend has a machine-turned palmrest mount installed to mount a ball-shaped cork palmrest. Right side wall of receiver has been cut away, showing a machine-turned block. Included with the rifle is a sighting disk. CONDITION: Very fine as totally refinished by H.M. Pope. Rifle retains nearly all of the blue finish. Bore is bright with strong rifling. Stocks are fine with rubbed oil finish. Set trigger works. SCARCE REMINGTON NO. 3 HEPBURN TYPE-A SINGLE SHOT TARGET RIFLE WITH AMMUNITION, BULLETS, LOADING TOOLS AND CASE.

SN I9916. Cal. 32-30. Fine Remington target rifle in a proprietary Remington caliber with 26″ oct to rnd bbl, Wingauge globe front sight, slot blank in rear seat and drilled & tapped for scope bases. Muzzle end of bbl is drilled for a 6-prong bullet starter, which is missing. Top tang is mounted with a thick base Vernier tang sight with 3-1/4″ staff. Receiver has sgl trigger. Mounted with nicely figured, slab-sawed American walnut with black insert, uncheckered, Schnable tip forearm and checkered bag shaped pistol grip stock with Remington steel, semi-crescent buttplate. Top flat of bbl is marked with “Remington Arms Co.” address and bottom of bbl is marked “32-30”. According to Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms, there were about 1000 of these fine rifles produced 1883-1907. Very few remain unaltered today as most were changed in some way to suit the owner’s needs or whims. Accompanied by a fine modern, green felt lined custom oak case that has brass corners, latches and a functioning lock with key. Bottom is compartmented for the rifle and a box of UMC primed shells which have been loaded, one missing; a box of Remington 32 cal. grooved bullets; an Ideal nickeled loading tool with expander plug and an Ideal wood handled bullet mold. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Bbl retains about 95% strong orig blue with wear around the muzzle from the bullet starter along with sharp edge wear and a few small nicks. Receiver retains virtually all of its orig case colors, bright on sides, faded over receiver ring and bottom of receiver. Buttplate retains faded case colors. Stock has a hairline back of top tang, otherwise wood is sound and shows most of its orig varnish with some minor heat crazing. Mechanics are crisp. Bright shiny bore. Case and tools are fine. RARE AND DESIRABLE REMINGTON-KEENE MAGAZINE CARBINE AND LINE THROWING PROJECTOR.

NSN. Cal. 45-70. 20″ carbine variation with blue finish covering all parts with exception of bolt assembly and buttplate. Traditional name and patent dates on bolt with sub-inspector C.E.C. on right side of bbl at breech. Unusual integral line throwing adapter extends from the last 7-1/4″ of bbl and is ported with nine gas ports at the 12 o’clock position of said bbl. A strengthening rib has been added between the magazine tube and bbl extending all the way to front bbl band. No SN or additional markings could be located other than cal. designation of 45-70 at back left of receiver. This variation of a line throwing projector has never been observed by this cataloger before. Stocks are of 1-pc walnut and are the same as a traditional Remington Keene with the exception of an additional strengthening screw immediately below the chamber. CONDITION: Very fine overall, with most blue finish remaining from time of alteration. Stocks are solid with slight wear at wrist and bottom of forearm. No cracks, however, numerous small bruises exist probably from storage. Mechanics are fine. Bore is bright with sharp rifling. SCARCE BURGESS GUN CO. FOLDING PUMP 12 GAUGE SHOTGUN.

SN 3370. Cal. 12 ga. 2-5/8″ chamber. Most unusual of American-made shotguns with 19-1/2″ bbl. These shotguns were a most innovative design by an extremely prolific 19th century inventor, Andrew Burgess, who in 1892 established his own company and was in business only until 1899 when his company & patents were purchased by Winchester, apparently as a method of eliminating competitors. Mr. Burgess’ unique design functions by way of a sliding wrist that operated the bolt to eject and reload. It has an exposed hammer and a unique latching system mounted on a collar around the bbl with extended latch that hooks into a notch on front forward part of frame. The action was further unique in that the magazine tube could only be loaded with the action open. Mounted with coarse checkered forearm that has a dimple in bottom to accommodate trigger guard when action is folded. The pump device on wrist is sheet steel with checkered panels on each side of hammer slot and is mounted with a checkered walnut bottom grip area. Stock is fitted with a Burgess Gun Company HRBP. All metal parts are blued. There is a light SSN engraved with electric pencil on left side of frame. CONDITION: Good. Metal parts retain approximately 40% orig blue finish with scattered pinprick erosion, toning, and markings are somewhat light. Buttstock and forearm are good with scattered handling marks and scratches, there are small losses at toe. Checkering is lightly thinned. Mechanics are functional. NSN. 15-12″ overall. 13-3/4″ overall including cascabel. Breech is crisply marked “L.T. SNOW / THE STRONG CANNON / M’F’R / NEW HAVEN CONN / USA”. Mounted on original brass mounted mahogany carriage. CONDITION: Very good overall. Firing pin cap appears to have been restored with a knurled end copper finial. Gun holds cock, locks and fires. Brass has a light mustard patina as do carriage mounts. Mahogany body is sound with scuffs and cracquelure to varnished surface. One brass bolt securing axle is missing. Matching assembly numbers to breech and tube. NSN. (1829) Cal. 43. 9-1/2″ Octagon bbls with hair “rifling” are unmarked. Breech plugs have platinum bands. Back locks are nicely acanthus engraved and are also engraved “P. Vallee” “Phila” (working at South 2nd Street 1829) on tails. American walnut saw-handled half stocks have horn tips and checkered bag grips. Furniture is of iron. Trigger guards have finger spurs and pineapple finials. Triggers are set. Pistols are housed in a mahogany case lined in blue velvet, which contains some accessories. CONDITION: Excellent. Bbls retain most of their orig brown, locks and breech iron have most of their case color. Trigger guards have traces of blue. Stocks retain most of their orig finish with numerous light marks. One gun has a crack at forend running through escutcheon. One lock will not cock. One trigger won’t set. These guns are “as found” and undoubtedly need a good cleaning. Pistols fit case perfectly. CASED PAIR OF NEW YORK DUELING/ TARGET PISTOLS BY BLUNT & SYMS.

NSN. Cal. 50. 9″ Twist octagon bbls with smooth bores are engraved “BLUNT & SYMS N. Y.” (working at 44 Chatham Street 1848-50) on tops. Breech plugs have two gold bands. Back locks are scroll engraved and unsigned. Triggers are set. American walnut half stocks are mounted in german silver with finger spurs on trigger guards and rings around checkered flared grips. Ends of grips have lanyard rings and are numbered “4055”. German silver rectangles at tops of grips are engraved “Chiene” “quoi” “qu-advienne” (Dogs beware ?). Pistols are housed in what appears to be orig mahogany case with brass D ring handle. Case is lined in red velvet, and contain some old accessories including bullet mold, brass bodied two cavity flask, and steel nipple wrench. CONDITION: Fine, as nicely refinished. Bbls have most of an old re-brown with good definition to pattern. Locks and breech plugs have nearly all of an old re-color. All engraving is slightly softened. Stocks have old refinish with some light marks, checkering re-cut, stocks appear to be sound. Mechanically good. Case is good with many light scratches. NSN. Cal. 52. 9″ Octagon bbls with 7 groove rifling, are engraved “London” on top flats. There are silver bands around breech ends of bbls. Integral rear sights are in engraved and case hardened breech irons. Back locks with sliding safeties are acanthus engraved and are engraved “A. W. SPIES” (working at Broadway and Fulton Street New York 1832-57) on tails. Triggers are set. What appears to be American walnut saw-handled half stocks have checkered flared grips. Stocks are German silver mounted. Engraved trigger guards have finger spurs. There are engraved bands around grips with cap boxes inset on bottoms of grips. Vacant ovals are on tops of grips. Ebony ramrods have German silver caps and tails. Walnut case with inlet brass corners is lined in blue velvet, and contains two ball molds and a Sykes patent flask with ball reservoir. CONDITION: Excellent. Bbls retain most of their orig finish with good definition to pattern. Breech plugs, locks, etc. have over 80% orig case hardening color. Stocks retain most of their orig oil finish. One gun has repair to stock through lock area down to trigger, with a piece missing on left side above lock screw escutcheon. This pistol is also missing its German silver band around grip. The other pistol appears to be sound. Mechanically good. Case is good. Orig interior cloth somewhat faded and rubbed. FINE CASED PAIR OF PHILADELPHIA TARGET PISTOLS BY E. ANSCHUTZ.

NSN. Cal. 32. 9″ Octagon bbls with 6 deep groove rifling, are stamped “E. ANSCHUTZ” “PHILADELPHIA” on tops. Breech irons are fitted with rear sights adjustable for elevation. Bar locks are also stamped with makers name and address, and are engraved with sprays of shaded acanthus within geometric borders. Triggers are set. Schnabeled half stocks with no provision for ramrods have checkered flared grips. Blued steel trigger guards with finger spurs have stylized pineapple finials. Mahogany case is lined in green cloth, and contains a number of old accessories, including a loading rod, three compartment flask, and bullet mold. Some new accessories are also present. CONDITION: Fine. Bbls retain over 80% of their orig brown, with some flecking. Locks and breech plugs have traces of color where protected. Stocks have most of their orig french polish finish with numerous marks and scratches. Trigger guards retain most of their orig charcoal blue. Mechanically fine. NSN. Cal. 50. 9-1/2″ Octagonal smooth bore bbls are unmarked. Percussion locks with scroll engraving are also engraved “J. E. EVANS PHILADa” (worked 1850 – 1865). Pistols are iron mounted. Triggers are set. Stocks with no provision for ramrods have flared checkered grips and schnabeled forends. Silver ovals at tops of grips are engraved “MW”. Brass bound rosewood veneered case is lined in purple cloth, and contains assorted old accessories including bullet mold and small copper bodied flask. CONDITION: Good, as partially refinished. Bbls re-browned. Lock of one gun has traces of color, the other re-colored. Stocks have orig finish with added oil over numerous marks. Some repairs on one pistol at forend. NSN. Cal. 32 smooth bore. 10-1/4″ Browned octagon bbls are engraved “A. Wurfflein Philada” on top flats. Breech plugs have platinum and gold lines. Scroll engraved breech irons have integral rear sights. Case hardened bar locks with flat faced serpentine hammers are also scroll engraved, along with “A. Wurfflein”. Triggers are set. Figured American walnut flared and fluted grip half-stocks with schnabeled tips are iron mounted. Blued trigger guards have finger spurs. Grip caps have turned finials. Pistols are housed in a well made modern walnut case, lined in red cloth, which contains a mix of old and new accessories including a loading rod, turnscrews, and nipple key, along with an unusual newly made walnut bodied powder flask. CONDITION: Excellent, as expertly refinished, retaining nearly all traditional finishes on wood and metal. Temper blue of trigger guard flaking at grip. Stocks have french polish over some old marks. FINE CASED PAIR OF SCREW BARREL, FOLDING TRIGGER, PERCUSSION MUFF PISTOLS WITH ACCESSORIES BY CHARLES MOORE, IN SUPERB ORIGINAL CONDITION.

SN 4, 5. Cal. 38. 1-1/2″ Case hardened bbls and rounded boxlock percussion actions fitted with folding blued triggers and back sliding safeties, are engraved “C. MOORE 77 St. James’s STt London” (Charles Moore working at that address 1825-1842) on left sides, and with well cut large open scroll on right sides. Bottoms of breech sections are stamped with London black powder proofs, and serial/ assembly numbers “4” and “5” which are also on bbls. Bag grips with silver caps have very closely spaced checkering, and silver ovals at tops of grips. Pistols are housed in their orig rosewood veneered case, lined in blue velvet, and containing an array of fine accessories, including an unmarked German silver small sized combination powder/ cap/ and ball flask, polished steel nutcracker type ball mold, combination polished steel bbl and nipple wrench, brass and steel loading rod, ebony handled nipple wrench, and a bone handled dusting brush. PROVENANCE: Outstanding estate collection of Confederate and historical arms of Morris Racker. CONDITION: Excellent, very near to new, appears unfired, with only some slight oxidation in need of cleaning on inside of grip of gun “5”. Case is excellent with some chips and cracks in veneer. Fine heavy (3lbs) bbld target pistol 13-1/2″ overall with 8″ bbl with dovetailed German silver blade sight and unique adjustable rectangular tang sight that folds into mortise cut into breech. Gun exhibits engraved lock, hammer, breech, escutcheons, trigger guard and screws. Checkered wrist with flat steel buttcap with lanyard stud. 3-1/2″ belt loop. PROVENANCE: Christie’s East, NYC, Lot 69, December 19, 1984. CONDITION: Very good overall, complete and orig. Thin traces of finish on bbl which is marked on top flat “PHILADELPHIA”. NSN. Cal. about 44. Bbl is 5-3/4″ with rifleD bore. Top flap is engraved “G. Cunkle”. Lock & hammer have foliate engraving with marking “P. Vallee/Phila”. “American Gunsmiths” by Frank M.Sellers gives the following listing: “Cunkle, George. Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, 1840-1861d. Percussion fullstock”. Sellers also has the following listing: “Vallee, Prosper, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1824d-1846d. Percussion guns”. Prosper Vallee was a French gunsmith who sold his gunshop to John Krider. Single set trigger. Brass plate front sight with fixed V-notch rear sight. Key fastened fancy maple stock with checkered wrist. Brass fittings include buttcap, back strap, heel plate, trigger guard, forestock plate, faceted thimble, pipe, half moon sideplate escutcheon and nose cap. Hard wood ramrod. CONDITION: Very good. Metal has cleaned gray appearance with areas of pitting. Stock shows some finish wear and scattered handling marks with small chip along bbl channel forward of lock. Mechanics are functional. FINE AMERICAN PERCUSSION PISTOL BY JAMES E GOODWIN OF TRUMBULL CT.

Cal. 45. 6″ full oct rifled bbl signed “J.E. Goodwin” in a silver inlay on the top flat of bbl. Bbl is also decorated with eight additional silver inlays. Percussion lock is marked “Baker & Moss” Philadelphia. There is a five pointed silver star inlay on the bottom of the pistol grip, a diamond shaped silver inlay behind bbl tang and two diamond shaped silver inlays opposite the lock. NSN. Cal. .45. 10-1/2″ oct to rnd rifled bbl with engraved bbl tang. Curly maple stock with 14 silver inlays and an oval silver wrist inlay engraved “RB”. Engraved brass buttcap, trigger guard, rear ramrod pipe, and nose cap. James Bown is listed as a gunsmith in Pittsburgh from 1848 – 1887 and marked his guns James Bown & Son after 1847. CONDITION: The pistol is in very good shape, the name on the lock is worn to the point that it is hard to read and there are only remnants of the signature on the top flat of the bbl.
