NEW YORK ENGRAVED REMINGTON-ELLIOT DERINGER NO. 1 PISTOL WITH GOLD AND SILVER FINISH.
SN 10189. Cal. 22RF. 3-3/16″ bbl group. Silver and gold finish. 2-pc Mother of Pearl grips. Top of bbl shows 2-line Remington address and Elliot patent mark. SN is stamped on the inside of frame and on the bottom of the bbl cluster. Pistol is engraved in the New York style with vine scroll work running down each side of the bbl cluster with walking punch decoration in the flutes. Breech of bbl shows a splay decoration on the top. Recoil shield also shows splay decoration. Frame has vine decoration with fine punch dot background. Backstrap shows intertwining line decoration and a central star motif. Butt also shows intertwining line decoration. PROVENANCE: Bruce Burtner Collection. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl cluster is a smooth silver gray patina overall with traces of silver in protected areas. Bbl marking is sharp as is the engraving. Bores are bright with strong rifling and some slight staining. Frame is a silver gray patina overall and retains generous traces of gold wash in protected areas. Engraving is sharp and unmolested. Ring trigger is a silver gray patina. Mother of Pearl grips are very good with slight losses at the forward end of each grip. EXTREMELY RARE AND DESIRABLE REMINGTON DOUBLE DERINGER TYPE I MODEL 1 EARLY PRODUCTION SERIAL NUMBER 40.
SN 40. Cal. .41 RF. 3″ bbls, blue finish, 2-pc rosewood grips. This is an example of the extremely rare type I early production variant of the Remington Double Deringer. Elliot’s patent is marked on the left bbl rib, right bbl rib is marked “MANUFACTURED BY E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. N.Y”. SN 40 is stamped on the upper right grip frame under the grip. SN 40 is also stamped on the bottom of the bbl lug. Formerly in the William Lock Collection, and the Elliot Burka Collection. PROVENANCE: Bruce Burtner Collection. CONDITION: Very good. Bbls show a mottled gray/brown patina overall with hints of blue at the hinge point. Rib markings are sharp and clear. SN is sharp and clear. Bores are dark with traces of rifling. Frame shows a mottled silver/gray patina with some light erosion overall. SN mark is sharp. Hammer shows generous traces of blue finish. Bbl latch and trigger are a smooth gray/blue patina with hints of blue finish. Grips are very good, intact, and show light handling marks overall with nearly all of the varnish finish. This is the rarest variation of the Remington Double Deringer, made in 1866 with an estimated production of under 100 guns. VERY RARE ENGRAVED REMINGTON DOUBLE DERINGER TYPE I TRANSITIONAL MODEL NO. 1 FIRST VARIANT PISTOL.
SN 2029. Cal. .41 RF. 3″ bbls, nickel finish, 2-pc rosewood grips. Bbls show Remington address on left rib and Elliot’s patent mark on right rib. Elliot’s patent mark is stamped upside-down. SN is stamped on the left upper inside of the grip frame and under the bbl lug. Deringer is engraved sparsely in a vine style, upper bbl is engraved along both sides and on the rib, lower bbl is plain. Frame is also engraved in a vine scroll with punch-dot background and lined accents. Hammer is engraved on the front of the spur and on the rear surface. Bbl latch is engraved, trigger has an oval checkered face. This is an extremely rare variant of the Remington Double Deringer with address and patent marks on the bbl ribs and having a cartridge ejector. Formerly in the Maurie Fox Collection, this Deringer is also pictured in Doug Eberhart’s Deringer book, vol 2, pg 182. PROVENANCE: Bruce Burtner Collection. CONDITION: Very good. Bbls are a smooth silver/gray patina overall with slight erosion on the right side. All markings are sharp. Engraving is sharp. Bores are dark with only traces of rifling. Frame is also a silver/gray patina. Engraving is slightly washed out on the left recoil shield and is sharp everywhere else. Hammer is engraved on the spur, both sides and rear surface, there are remnants of nickel finish on the hammer which leads this cataloger to believe that this deringer was originally nickel finished, although there is no evidence of that finish anywhere but the hammer. Trigger checkering is sharp. SN’s are sharp. Grips are very good, intact with light handling marks overall. SN is stamped on the upper left grip frame under the grips and on the bottom of the bbl lug. Elliot’s patent is marked on the left side of the bbl rib, “E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. N.Y.” is stamped over right rib. CONDITION: Very good. Bbls retain 10% bright blue in protected areas with the balance blended to a mottled blue/brown patina. Rib markings are sharp. SN mark is sharp. Bores are frosty with some stains and visible rifling. Frame is a mottled silver/gray patina overall with some handling marks. Hammer retains traces of fire blue finish. Silverplated frame retains 60-70% of the deeply tarnished silver finish with the majority of the wear on the backstrap. Ring trigger shows a silver/gray patina overall. Trigger actuating rod shows a considerable amount of fire blue finish. Grips are fine with nearly all the orig finish and only slight high point wear at the bottom of each grip. SN 19662. Cal. 32RF. 3-3/8″ bbl cluster. 2-pc rosewood grips. Deringer is engraved overall in the New York style. Left bbl rib bears the Remington address. Right bbl rib shows Elliot’s patent mark. SN is stamped on the inside of the frame and on the bottom of the bbl cluster. Engraving is of the vine motif and is present on all 4 bbls with the top bbl engraving going the full length almost to the muzzle. Bottom bbl engraving goes two thirds to the muzzle. Frame engraving is also in a vine motif with a fine punch dot background and is seen on either side, on the recoil shield and the upper backstrap and butt. There is a checkerboard accent on either side of the frame above the grip. PROVENANCE: Bruce Burtner Collection. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl cluster shows a smooth gray blue patina overall with traces of blue in protected areas. Rib markings are sharp. Engraving is sharp and unpolished. This mismatch could possible have occurred when the Deringer was engraved and parts were switched between 2 guns with very close SN’s. Engraving is in the New York style with vine scroll on the top bbl, scallop decoration on the ribs, and a floral motif on the bottom bbl. Frame is engraved in a vine scroll motif with a punch dot background and scallop decoration on each recoil shield. Small scroll appears behind hammer. Grip straps are otherwise bare. PROVENANCE: Bruce Burtner Collection. CONDITION: Fine. Deringer retains 90%+ of the nickel finish overall with slight losses on the lower bbl and muzzle. All markings are sharp and clear. SN L75459. Cal. .41 RF. 3″ Bbls, matte gray/blue finish. Bbl has 1-line Remington-U.M.C. address on top. Bottom bbl has “U.S. Property” stamped on the lower surface towards the muzzle. Bbl also shows “WB” stamped on the locking lug. SN appears on the lower left grip frame and on the bottom of the bbl. Right side of frame under bbl latch shows a diamond and 6-pointed star proof with “E.E.C.” stamped to the rear, this is a U.S. inspectors mark. There is an ordnance bomb proof stamped on the butt of the grip strap. Pictured and referenced to on pages 93, 129, 130 and 131 of Remington Double Derringer by Drummond, Johnson, Williams, and Barnard. PROVENANCE: Bruce Burtner Collection. CONDITION: Very good. PROVENANCE: Bruce Burtner Collection. CONDITION: Very fine. Pistol retains almost all of the orig nickel finish with only slight scratches overall. There is 1 small dent on the left side of the muzzle. Front sight is full sized. Bore is bright with clear rifling and appears un-fired. Hammer, trigger and grip screw retain nearly all of the fire blue finish. Frame pins and screws also show considerable blue. SN 434. Cal. 22RF. 3-1/4″ rnd bbl. Full nickel finish. Punch dot engraved in a scroll and walking line motif. SN is stamped on the right inside of grip frame. REMINGTON VEST POCKET PISTOL A.K.A. “SAW HANDLE DERINGER”.
SN 2258. Cal. 41RF. 4″ bbl. Full nickel finish. 2-pc walnut grips. Bbl shows 2-line Remington address and patent mark on top flat. Left flat shows 2 small British proofs. SN is stamped on left inside of grip frame and on the bottom of the bbl Assembly No. 80 appears on left inside of grip frame and is written in pencil on the inside of each grip. PROVENANCE: Bruce Burtner Collection. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl assembly retains 90% of the somewhat dull nickel finish with some light flaking and sharp marks. Bore is stained with visible rifling. Frame retains 20-30% nickel that has flaked to a silver gray patina overall. Frame markings are sharp. Hammer, breechblock and trigger retain a considerable amount of blue finish. Grips are very good and show nearly all of the varnish finish with only slight handling marks overall. A very nice example of a 41 cal. SN 2179. Cal. 32RF. 4″ bbl. Blue and silver finish. 2-pc rosewood grips. Top flat of bbl breech shows 2-line Remington address and patent mark. SN is stamped on the left inside of the grip frame and written in pencil on the inside of each grip. PROVENANCE: Bruce Burtner Collection. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl shows a smooth blue gray patina overall with some traces of blue in protected areas. Marking is sharp and bore is bright with strong rifling and some stains. Frame retains generous traces of silver plate in protected areas. Hammer and breechblock show a generous amount of bright blue finish. Trigger is a silver gray patina.
