He also has glass eyes. SIZE: 7-1/2″ h. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of Malcolm Deisenroth, Jr. CONDITION: Bank is in excellent to pristine condition with bright colors and very little wear. CITROEN 4-DOOR SEDAN. Very impressive in size and scale, this car seems more like a real car than a toy. There are so many features about this car, there would be too many to list. Details starting with the massive clockwork mechanism (working) activated through a shaft in the radiator, the clockwork spring alone is something to see. There is a transmission that actually shifts from forward to reverse. There is a drive shaft that goes to a rear differential and independent suspension. It has electric headlights, nickel plated grill, rubber tires and spare that all could be removed for additional play value, four opening doors with windows that slide up and down. Upon opening the doors, the doors are stamped tin simulating upholstery. Both seats are stamped tin and simulated upholstery, working headlight switch, authentic steering wheel that activates steering mechanism. The car also includes a sun visor, louvers on the hood, simulated cowl vent, elliptical spring detail and hangers, rear license plate and simulated light. The car itself is two-tone medium brown and tan, black roof, visor, fenders, and splash aprons, aluminum running boards, and black wheels. It looks great from every angle. SIZE: 21-1/4″ l. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of Malcolm Deisenroth, Jr. CONDITION: Near excellent. 1-10044 (5,000-8,000)

Correction: There is a teeny paint fleck on the black man’s elbow and driver’s hand. There is a small piece of tape at the flag seam.
LEHMANN NEW CENTURY CYCLE W/ORIGINAL BOX. This early design featuring a Berlin pedal engine cab developed into the New Century Cycle. This rare version has a passenger carrying the British flag, in place of the more common hat. As car moves forward, flag rises up and down while the red and white striped umbrella that coachman is holding spins. Toy comes with original box. SIZE: 5″ l. CONDITION: Probably one of the best – if not THE best – conditioned examples of this toy to ever turn up at auction. Colors are extremely bright, and gold staining on the wheels is brilliant. Overall, toy is in near mint plus condition. Label on box is near mint. On the box itself, two small parts of the side flaps on lid are missing. Overall, box is excellent plus. 1-10289 (1,500-2,500)

IVES CANNONBALL TRAIN. One of the largest floor trains produced by Ives at the turn of the 20th century. Large steam locomotive is painted black with gold highlights and red wheels. The number 189 is cast into sides of tender. There is also a large japanned boxcar with two sliding doors for entry and the words “UNION LINE” cast into both sides of car, and a large japanned passenger car with the words “LIMITED VESTIBULE EXPRESS” embossed above its windows. Tender, boxcar and passenger car each have eight wheels. It’s hard to believe that such a large and heavy train was made for a child to play with. SIZE: 54-1/2″ l. overall. CONDITION: Train is in very good plus condition, with some chipping to roofs of cars and some general wear to wheels from age. Overall, for a toy of this size and age, very respectable. 1-10272 (1,000-1,200)

Both 3342 & 3343 were consigned from an estate. It was our belief that they are both original and in outstanding condition. However, a couple collectors have voiced concerns that they are so good that they must be restored and there seems to be no positive was to prove one way or the other. Therefore, we do not guarantee that these lots have not been restored.
LIONEL 5344 ENGINE & TENDER. In exceptional original condition, this classic Lionel train also known as the Hudson is in very fine plus condition. Drive wheels underneath show some wear, but some blackening still in place. Most likely always packed away as engine shows no evidence of shelf dust. Marker lights intact, nickeled railings, whistle, bell etc. bright and shiny. Rubber stamping of 5344 is brilliant with no wear. The twelve wheel tender matches the condition of the engine and it is hard to believe that original boxes are not present! The following few lots were packed away in a closet for upwards of 30 years. Both this engine and the following engine (763E) are in virtually unplayed with original condition. Several other lots must have been the trains that the children were allowed to played with. These two engines surely had to be off limits to the kids. SIZE: Overall approx. 24″ l. CONDITION: As noted. 1-9822 (2,250-4,250)

LIONEL 763E ENGINE & TENDER WITH ORIGINAL BOXES. Another amazing engine from the same closet as the Lionel 5344, this engine is very close to being in unplayed with exceptional condition. The gun metal gray finish is near flawless. Tender has a few minute paint chips on base edge. Rubber stamping is crisp and vibrant. Nickeling to bell, whistle and railings are brilliant. The boxes are intact and very firm. Locomotive box has one detached internal end flap and one internal missing flap. No box insert. These trains have been tucked away in the closet and a newspaper indicates that they have been packed away in 1978 and have not seen the light of day for 30+ years. A few train lots following were evidently the ones children played with. But this engine as well as the 5344 must have been off limits to the children. Included with this particular lot is the original instruction manual for this locomotive. SIZE: Overall 22″ l. CONDITION: As noted. 1-9823 (1,750-2,750)

FABULOUS GERMAN CRANK AUTOMATON WITH 7 FIGURES. An outstanding as well as clever automaton, circa 1920s featuring six bisque headed jester figures playing various instruments led by bisque headed conductor. An unusually large piece for this particular venue, the characters’ faces with open/closed mouths and painted eyes make this a most charming and appealing item. The wooden box is covered in a paper litho as well as a carpeted floor. When activated, the conductor moves on his pedestal, directs the band members who twist about in their chairs or turn their heads while playing their instruments. A different and more elaborate crank automaton than usually one encounters. SIZE: 17″ w x 15″ d x 12″ h. CONDITION: Overall appears to be in very fine original condition. Conductor needs to be re-secured to pedestal. 1-10487 (2,000-3,000)

UNUSUALLY LARGE SIMON & HALBIG DOLL MADE FOR THE FRENCH MARKET. Lovely early Simon & Halbig doll incised “S&H/18/949″ with open smiling mouth with four square upper teeth, pierced ears, inset blue glass eyes with painted lower lashes and fine silk upper eyelashes, sweeping multi-stroke thickly painted eyebrows and mounted to the original fully jointed wood and composition body with fine original patina. She is dressed in an antique dress which is probably an original child’s dress made of pleated white horizontally ribbed cotton with a fine lace collar, low waist sash and sleeves trimmed in similar material. The wig is antique blond mohair with bangs and long curls in back. Shoes are antique, one-strap, blue leather children’s shoes. Overall a lovely life sized doll. SIZE: 34″ h (87cm). EXTREMELY LARGE & DETAILED ARCHITECTURAL/DOLL HOUSE. Although found with some doll furniture, it does not appear to access points other than windows and doors unless access points have been sealed. This turn of the century piece features simulated mortared brick for the basement block, simulated traditional brick for the second story, and the upper level has clapboard with a nicely shingled roof. Also includes copper piping, presumably to have running water as there is a tub on top. This fact leads us to believe that it was a model. Other highlights include an exterior fence, opening weighted windows (some with screens) and at one time a working doorbell. Front entrance on lowest level with a side entrance on the second story with stair entrance, screen door, and fancy Victorian solid wood door with oval glass window. Appealing homemade detail inside and out. Interior has several staircases, opening raised panel doors, trim work, molding, early wallpaper, built-in cabinets with doors and drawers, metal radiators, and curtained windows with some working shades. Perhaps this was a copy of a real house with 10+ rooms with the first level being a basement only. CONDITION: Unsure of level of completeness. Exterior finish has darkened and is a little dirty, but could be cleaned. Window and doors are mostly intact. Inside is a little disheveled but workable for a house of this age. Overall very good. 1-10528 (500-1,000)

PULVER’S WOODEN CASED “YELLOW KID” GUM MACHINE. Another “fresh to the market find” just discovered down the street from Julia`s auction gallery. This outstanding example of a clockwork turn of the century gum vendor features the truly first American comic spokesperson…the Yellow Kid. A single column gum vendor, activated by a penny, the Yellow Kid bows, then turns to the gum column, raising his hand to his mouth and then turns back to observe the delight of the young child receiving a stick of gum. A pot metal head with original paint and a polished cotton gown (frail, fabric loss) adorn the Yellow Kid figure. Cabinet is constructed of oak with a glass front window and two smaller glass windows on either side. An oval brass tag is mounted to the front panel/door and all paper adorning the front window are is original. Truly not only is this a great coin operated vending machine but a wonderful piece of turn of the century Americana that has been in attic storage for generations. In fact, the original finish has worn down almost to bare wood as would be expected from decades of service and subsequent storage. SIZE: 12″ w x 10-1/2″ d x 24-1/4″ h. CONDITION: Overall machine is in very good-fine original condition in as found working condition with a couple minor splits to wood case, lacking lock on back door. 1-10540 (9,000-11,000)

NELSON WIGGINS “5X” NICKELODEON. A fine all original “as found” nickelodeon manufactured from the late teens until the late 1920s. As opposed to the “KT SPECIAL” or other similar models produced by other companies, this nickelodeon has fewer instruments but Nelson Wiggins was known for having the highest quality instruments of any of the manufacturers (for this type of musical machine) according to Q. David Bowers (Encyclopedia of Automatic Instruments). The instruments include: piano, banjo attachment (mandolin), snare drum, triangle and a marimbas (xylophone). A popular model used in speakeasies, hotels, private clubs, etc. due to the compact size and availability of many different “rolls” which could be easily interchanged by the proprietor. The cabinet is veneered oak (usually a walnut veneer) with the typical clear glass front. Overall this is a very solid machine in unrestored condition in need of mechanical restoration. The cabinet does have the typical veneer scrapes and minor losses but quite possibly the cabinet could just be cleaned and repaired where necessary. SIZE: 47-1/2″ w x 23-3/4″ d x 63″ h. CONDITION: As mentioned above, currently not functional, clear glass has been replaced. Coin tube has been replaced. 1-10406 (5,000-7,000)
