Correction: Is a 4X not a 5X. NELSON WIGGINS “5X” NICKELODEON. A fine all original “as found” nickelodeon manufactured from the late teens until the late 1920s. As opposed to the “KT SPECIAL” or other similar models produced by other companies, this nickelodeon has fewer instruments but Nelson Wiggins was known for having the highest quality instruments of any of the manufacturers (for this type of musical machine) according to Q. David Bowers (Encyclopedia of Automatic Instruments). The instruments include: piano, banjo attachment (mandolin), snare drum, triangle and a marimbas (xylophone). A popular model used in speakeasies, hotels, private clubs, etc. due to the compact size and availability of many different “rolls” which could be easily interchanged by the proprietor. The cabinet is veneered oak (usually a walnut veneer) with the typical clear glass front. Overall this is a very solid machine in unrestored condition in need of mechanical restoration. The cabinet does have the typical veneer scrapes and minor losses but quite possibly the cabinet could just be cleaned and repaired where necessary. SIZE: 47-1/2″ w x 23-3/4″ d x 63″ h. CONDITION: As mentioned above, currently not functional, clear glass has been replaced. Coin tube has been replaced. 1-10406 (5,000-7,000) Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Spring 2010 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price. The prices noted here after the auction are considered unofficial and do not become official until after the 46th day. |
