REMARKABLE AMERICAN ILLUSIONIST/MAGICIAN ARCADE MACHINE. First part of 20th Century, this phenomenally rare arcade machine of American manufacture was recently discovered in the Pennsylvania coal regions and is “as-found” with its original wood and interior finish. Any form of magician machine is rare, but American machines are exceedingly rare. In addition, the complexity of the illusion (for a coin-op machine) is mind boggling. The trick, known as Pepper’s Ghost was originally developed in 1863 by Professor John Henry Pepper, and was perhaps a re-designing of an earlier concept by Henry Dircks, a civil engineer who crated a machine that used mirrors and lenses to project a ghostly image for theatrical productions. The interior of this machine boasts an elaborate stage setting where the magician performs the illusion of turning a fancily dressed woman in to a dancing skeleton. The bearded magician wearing a black tuxedo is constructed of articulated metal, having a moving arm, nodding head, and jointed waist allowing him to bow. When one cent is deposited in coin slot, rear of stage becomes lit and the female figure becomes visible. The magician then raises his hand and slowly turns, introducing his lovely assistant. A short while later, the assistant is transformed into a dancing skeleton, while the magician raises his arm directing attention to the illusion being performed. As the illusion progresses, the skeleton fades and the lovely assistant reappears while the magician once again raises his arm, and takes a bow. The final stages of this act are completed when the magician turns back toward the audience, raises his arm, and bows twice more in gratitude of their applause. The entire act takes over 60 seconds. Unlike other magic/illusion machines (Mills, Caille, etc.) this American arcade device is the only known example that truly performs and illusion through a series of mirrors and optical and lighting devices. Likely produced in small quantity by an unknown American manufacturer, this machine was probably was not of great commercial success. Not only did it take over one minute to perform the illusion, but how often would a child want to see the same act over and over (unlike a strength tester where one child could challenge another)? A unique feature of this machine allows the operator of the time to change from the one cent coin slot by removing two screws and replacing it with a 5-cent coin slot (nickel coin slot visible in inset photo). The machine features great attention having been paid to the detailing of the oak cabinet with fancy embossed tin panel inserts and cast iron feet. The elaborate mechanism is quintessentially American craftsmanship including wooden and metal cams, reduced gearbox, and operated by a leather belt-driven attached to an electric motor of U.S. origin (and is so marked). The electrical system consists of knob & tube wiring (popular in the U.S. from late 1800s to late 1930s). A patent date visible on one of the white porcelain knobs states “February 3, 1920 pat.” The wiring is done in typical U.S. fashion (110 volt, AC). The machine has a “counter” of American manufacture with an 1899 patent date. The machine screws used in the production of this arcade machine are of standard U.S. thread size (6/32, 8/32, 10/24, etc.). The lock on front panel door was manufactured by Sargent and is unquestionably the original locking device. SIZE: 30” w. x 60” h. x 30” d. CONDITION: Overall in as-found, untouched condition. Wood retains original aged finish (front panel appears to have been lightly cleaned?). Replacement key for front lock. Machine still contains dust, dirt, and cobwebs, but is in fully functional and operating condition. At some point in time (1940s) and operator/owner added a free play button on the upper right hand panel. EARLY DR. KERN’S HEADACHE REMEDY VENDING MACHINE. Extraordinarily rare and perhaps one-of-a-kind vending machine recently discovered in Pennsylvania and in as-found condition. The oak cabinet has aluminum panels with a plethora of advertising and information emblazoned on the sides. Although the machine was originally for a company in Bath, Penn., the aluminum advertising panels were manufactured by New Jersey Aluminum Co., Newark, NJ. Patent date on push rod (which dispenses product) is Sept. 29, 1903, hence dating the machine to the early 1900s. Mechanism is activated by dropping coin in right or left slot, pushing rod inward, and product is dispensed through lower receptacle. A truly unique and wonderful machine that appeals to vending as well as those who collect early pharmaceutical or medicinal remedies. SIZE: 6 ¾” w. x 15 ¼” h. x 6 ¾” d. Phonograph attachment is all original including tone arm, turntable, and crank. Included is a custom built wood case holding approximately 80 discs and two 78 RPM records. OUTSTANDING G. BAKER-TROLL & COMPANY CYLINDER MUSIC BOX. This exquisite harp, harmonic, piccolo music box is complete with three interchangeable 11” cylinders. The lovely case has lined inlay with burled walnut borders. It sits on a matching beautiful Queen Anne-style table similarly inlaid and with a center drawer, which holds the extra cylinders. 11” CYLINDER EXCELSIOR MUSIC BOX WITH 6 BELLS. Inlaid case with ebony trim. Music box features zither attachment and six bells with butterfly strikers. Bells are held on with little flowers. Fancy Victorian brass handles on each side. Original tune card is inside listing six tunes. Box plays 33 notes and 13 notes on organ, and has a six-tune indicator to tell which tune is being played. EARLY AMERICAN TIN TRAIN SET. Train set with an engine stenciled “Victory” painted red, blue, green and yellow along with a green tender two box cars. FABULOUS ROOSTER SKITTLE SET. Extremely large brightly multi colored papier mache rooster with glass eyes riding on 4 cast iron wheels painted gold. Cradling a 9 pin set in the form of chicks. Chicks are dressed as clowns, they are nestled in the rooster in the original excelsior. Breathtaking set of skittles. The set looks like it has hardly ever been played with if at all. SIZE: 19-1/2″ l x 15-1/2″ h. CONDITION: The roosters colors are bright and vibrant shows almost no wear. Typically these delicate works of art exhibit considerable damage, however, this example is simply extraordinary. A couple of minor chips on one side and a slight old crack on the left side. RARE IVES WALKING SANTA CLAUS. Outstanding early American interpretation of the European Father Christmas dressed in brown fabric with white trim and collar. Has pack of toys on back including china doll. Wood and iron body with cast iron feet on wood rollers, cast lead hands and head. Wind him up and watch him go. SIZE: 9 3/4” t. RARE IVES SAILOR TOY. An unknown toy until this example surfaced recently. Pictured in an Ives catalog with many other interesting Ives toys of the period. The composition and wood Sailor is affixed to a steel rod & connected to an iron base (marked “Pat Sept 7, 1897”). The cast iron centrifugal wheel at the sailor’s feet is spun causing the sailor to do a jig. A most unusual and attractive toy that is a “must have” for the serious collector of Ives toys. DECAMP ELEPHANT AUTOMATON. An outstanding lifelike clockwork toy of a pachyderm with realistic movement. When wound, the elephant plods forward upon his articulated ankles. Carriage is hand-painted in blue and black, pinstriped in yellow and red with a brown seat and gray floor boards with yellow stenciling and black shield. Carriage sits on large springs painted red with red wheels, pinstriped yellow. Also comes with two nickel plated tin and glass side lamps with fancy holders. Has opening side doors with glass windows. Interior painted gray-blue. Also included, a large horse on a wooden platform. Horse is hide covered with glass eyes and has leather trappings. LARGE GUNTHERMANN GORDON BENNET RACECAR. Wow!! Fresh out of New England attic, this fabulous early lithographed racer with tin balloon tires, features two exaggerated hand painted crouched figures with aspirations of being the first to cross the finish line. Believed to be the best known and most sought after of all Gunthermann cars. Clockwork mechanism with chain driven wheels. Two large die cast headlamps in green and red grace the front end with a 4-leaf clover lithographed on the hood. Also marked on front “5” and “Coupe Gordon Bennet on both sides of hood. Gunthermann logo appears on tail of racer. SIZE: 12-1/4″ l. x 4-3/4” w. CONDITION: One of the finest to turn up. All original and in near excellent condition with strong lithography. Couple small scratches on hood with minor flaking to figures, and usual edge wear to tires. It lacks only the diecast horn (usually missing) and the spare rubber tire. AGAJANIAN RACER # 98 W/OB, TICKETS AND MUG. A rare racer lithographed in crème and red with a large driver wearing goggles and helmet driving car. Rubber tires with steel hubs. This car is rare because most of these large Yonezawa racers are marked “Champion” and only a few had the “Agajanian Special” name. Also has name Troy Ruttman on both sides of car. Lot also comes with Agajanian special mug and one ticket from the 1952 race and one from the 1953 race, which features photo of Ruttman on it. SIZE: 18-1/2″ l x 8-1/2″ w. HAND PAINTED BING 4-SEAT TOURER. Ca. early 1900s. Early open touring car hand enameled in green with light brown seats, which are nicely molded tin simulating cushions, gold painted cowl and headlamps, white rubber tires with yellow spokes, and four opening doors. Car has on/off lever and is impressed with early Bing trademark on floor of car. The quality of these early Bing cars are comparable to the quality of their Marklin counterparts. SCHOOLMASTER WINDUP TOY. By CKO (George Kellerman). Lithographed figure standing in schoolroom with three attentive students. Base is brightly lithographed with images of children playing. RARE NIFTY “JIGGS IN HIS JAZZ CAR”. Lithograph car in light brown colors with red highlights with a saying on trunk of car “Jiggs in his jazz car”. Also, lithograph “Nifty” on both doors of car. Jiggs holds the steering wheel and when car is wound Jiggs head turns from side to side while his hand turns steering wheel. This is an extremely rare and desirable character toy. A GREAT AMUSEMENT RIDE “THE WHIP” W/OB. We have a tin arena with four lithograph cars with a child sitting in each. When toy is wound spring propels cars erratically around ride in a whip like fashion. Also, there is a lithograph ticket taker with a sign “Pay Here”. A really great action toy. LEHMANN “PADDY AND HIS PIG” W/OB. Hand-painted pig. Pig is dressed in red with a white saddle and gold trim. Being ridden by Paddy who is dressed in green and brown. Hand painted face and hat and hands. When toy is wound, Paddy swings from front to back, pig’s ears move simultaneously. Toy was a racial slur against the Irish at the turn of the century. SIZE: 6″ l x 5″ h. CONDITION: The hand-painted colors are extremely bright. Paddy’s clothes are very nice. Toy is in near mint condition. An exceptional example. HOWDY DOODY BAND WITH OB. Very colorful toy by Unique Art depicting Bob Smith at the piano, the Peanut Gallery pictured on the reverse, and even other Unique Art toys. When wound Howdy Doody does a jig while Buffalo Bob swings and sways. A great lithographed toy. Perhaps one of the scarcest band toys. SIZE: 8-1/4″ h. x 7″ w. NIFTY “MAGGIE AND JIGGS” W/OB. Lithograph Maggie with rolling pin on two wheels and Jiggs opposite on two wheels. Toy is connected by steel spring. When toy is wound Maggie tries to hit Jiggs with rolling pin and both figures move in a comical manner. SIZE 7″ l x 51/2″ h. CARETTE LIMOUSINE. Lithographed in deep blue with gold trim, black roof, it features hand painted chauffeur taxiing a hand painted well-to-do lady wearing a simulated mink scarf and wide brimmed hat. SIZE: 10″ l. x 5-1/2″ w. CONDITION: Litho is in very nice condition with only minor flaking. Figures show slight chipping, and wheel hubs have had touch-up and headlamp is possible replacement. HAND-PAINTED POOL PLAYER. Pool player is painted gray with flesh toned face, table is green with brown legs, and crème and brown base. The pool player studies his shot and when activated pool cue moves back and forth and places ball in one of the holes. Ball returns to pool player. A really great Victorian style to it. EARLY GERMAN GIRL FEEDING PARROT WINDUP. A girl hand-painted red with flesh painted face, dark hair with long braid, stands in front of table with large birdcage with parrot. When toy is wound girl moves arm simulating feeding parrot who bobs up and down. This is an extremely rare toy. We have never seen this toy before, it has much eye appeal. SIZE: 5″ l x 61/2″ h. LARGE CARETTE LIMOUSINE. Impressive green lithographed car with black enameled roof, running boards, and fenders with white rubber tires and red enameled spoked wheels Has two lead and tin cowl lamps and two tin and glass headlamps. Features hand painted chauffeur. This more deluxe version has beveled glass windows all around. Also features forward and reverse motor. SIZE: 15″ l. x 8-1/2″ h. DOLL ET CIE LORRY. Large and impressive live steam driven flatbed truck with two tin headlamps, hand painted simulated wood paneling, white rubber tires with spare. Painted in creamsicle orange with black lithographed hood with red pinstripes Top of hood opens to reveal an elaborate steam mechanism with chain driven steerable wheels. Also has handbrake and original Doll decal on passenger door. SIZE: 19-1/2″ l. x 7″ w. x 8-1/4″ h. CONDITION: Has original white rubber tires and headlamps, overall has a very nice appearance with minor chips. As is typical with live steam toys, there have been areas of touch-up to paint. CONVERSE PIERCE ARROW TIN WINDUP. A red car with green seats and interior with original wood headlamps and sidelights. Has opening passenger doors and has steel wheels painted white with red spokes. Has a huge spring motor under vehicle. It’s a very large and impressive toy and one of only few windup toys that Converse made. SIZE: 15-1/2″ l. HAND PAINTED WOMAN FEEDING CHICKENS. Circa 1900 German. Farm woman enameled in beige skirt, blue blouse, and red kerchief. EXCEEDINGLY RARE MICKEY MOUSE DRUMMER. Similar to the Nifty version only this rare find was manufactured in Italy by Bell and is so marked on Mickey’s feet. We have never handled this version before. Identical in every way to the more commonly found version, however, you will not find another too soon. Push the plunger down and Mickey does a drum roll. SIZE: 6-3/4″ h. LONG BILL DONALD ON ROCKING HORSE. A very unusual toy that incorporates a early celluloid Donald sitting on a wooden rocking horse. When toy is wound Donald rocks back and forth. Not many early Disney toys were produced that were mixing celluloid and wood. SIZE: 7-3/4″ l x 7-3/4″ h. CONDITION: Very minor fading to celluloid. BLACK DEEP SEA DIVER WINDUP. Lithograph deep sea diver made in Germany with bell helmet with loops to attach strings, propeller protruding between his legs. When propeller turns, diver swims in water. This is a rare toy because most other under water toys are sealed and enameled so water will not corrode motor. JAZZBO JIM STORE DISPLAY. The electric demonstrator was used in stores to promote and sell the Jazzbo Jim toy of which thousands upon thousands were sold. The toy is very common but the store display is extremely rare. Unlike the Strauss windup toy, the store display has a large electric motor and the dancer could dance for hours on end. Probably between 9 to 5 when the stores were open. The roof and box the dancer stands on is lithographed. Roof lithographed in brick and sides with scenes of black people at play. The figure is dressed in silk with a composition face and hands holding a wood and tin banjo. SIZE: 32″ h x 14-1/2″ w x 10″ d. CONDITION: Top of roof faded lacking almost all litho. TWO LARGE DISNEY BANNERS. Great double thick, 2-sided red felt banners believed to have once been displayed at Disneyland during the Christmas season. Colorfully decorated with holly leaves around the perimeter, one depicts Mickey Mouse dressed as a king, sitting atop his throne with scepter held high. The other depicts Donald Duck with a halo attached to a wood plank that he holds behind his back. Both are marked Walt Disney Productions at the bottom of each image and have identical images on the reverse. SIZE: Approx. 132” h. x 68” w. MARX BUCK ROGERS ROCKET POLICE PATROL. A lithographed rocket in red, green and yellow colors, with Buck Rogers atop shooting a ray gun. When toy is wound rocket moves, sparks fly out of exhaust and toy makes sound simulating gun fire. SIZE: 12″ l x 31/2″ w. BUCK ROGERS DISINTEGRATOR GUN WITH HOLSTER. Rarely is this model found with the holster. The gun retains its original gold paint and still works. When the trigger is pulled a light flashes in the red window above. The holster still retains its original embossing “Buck Rogers Atomic Pistol”. CONDITION: Retains original gold and black paint, and condition is generally good. Very slight surface rust in a couple of small spots. A great example. 1-4677 (600-800)

Keystone number 84 on both sides, Keystone Coast-To-Coast on both sides and a Packard sticker on radiator. Also top opens to reveal interior of bus. LARGE HANDMADE MODEL OF GREYHOUND BUS. Logging over 1,500 hours on this meticulous masterpiece, grocery store owner Russel Diener replicated the 1930s vehicle with special touches like individual seats, curtains, fire extinguishers, hand carved mirrors, luggage rack, and more. He even sought Firestone to custom craft miniature tires for his model like the real ones, which they gladly provided. He wished to sell the model to Greyhound, who stated they were not in the business of buying models. However, so impressed were they by the model, they awarded him a free trip to the 1933-1934 Chicago World’s Fair where he was able to display his handiwork at Greyhound’s pavilion, thus becoming a quasi-celebrity, likely helping a promising folk art career. It was right after the Great Depression and Diener tried to make ends meet by selling raffle tickets for the bus to the public at 10 cents apiece. The fair management put a stop to this because of the gambling nature of the raffle. Included with this lot are some of the original raffle tickets, newspaper clippings on Deiner, and several vintage photographs taken shortly after the completion of the bus. LOT OF 2 BUDDY “L” TRUCKS. Lot of later Buddy “L’s” including tow truck, and hydraulic dump truck. Enameled in white and green with black rubber tires and nickel plated tin headlights. SIZE: 26-1/2″ l and 22-1/4″ l respectively. CONDITION: Tow truck is near excellent with strong decals and only the slightest of chips, dump truck has slightly more pronounced paint chips with some surface rust, very strong hydraulics and remnants of original decals. 1-5672, 1-5716 AT (400-700)

THREE BUDDY “L” TEXACO TRUCKS. Including a 1950s truck, painted red cab, red trailer and black plastic wheels sold with two 1960 Texaco trucks. One with crème cab and red trailer with white and black tires. The other with all red cab and trailer with white and black tires. SIZE: Longest being 24” l. LOT OF 2 TEXACO TOYS. Lot includes Red Buddy “L” pressed steel oil truck marked “Tour with Texaco. Sound your horn. HILLCLIMBER NO. 80 AERIAL FIRE TRUCK. Very early Aerial ladder truck with two figures, one driving the truck and the other climbs the ladder when crank is turned. Toy has large cast iron wheels, tin sides and a wood bed. A very unusual toy. Also has a heavy duty Hillclimber motor and bell. SIZE: 22” l. DIECAST HUBLEY FIRE DEPT. TRUCK AND JAPANESE BATTERY OPERATED OLD TIMER CAR. Large ladder truck painted red with cream seat, adjustable lift ladder in back, and rubber tires. LOT OF THREE HILLCLIMBERS. Consisting of a large trolley car painted green and red. An early car painted red with iron wheels and a cast iron driver and passenger.
