NSN. Cal. 1.8″ at muzzle. 24″ Steel round bbl flares to 2-1/4″ at muzzle, rear portion is stamped with British military proofs and “4”. Large Brown Bess type lock with serpentine cock and bridled friction frizzen is marked “Tower” on tail and “GR” under a crown at center. Walnut stock with deeply fluted comb is stamped with broad arrow over “BO” (British Ordnance) on left side, along with proof and date 1800. Heavy brass furniture is of military style, and newly made reproduction iron rail yoke has been added. PROVENANCE: Old catalog description. CONDITION: Fine. Bbl and lock cleaned to silvery gray over scattered pitting. Stock has what appears to be orig varnish with many bumps and marks. Brass is a fine mustard patina. Mechanically good. NSN. Cal. 1-1/2″ Bore diameter at muzzle. 16″ Swamped round bbl has fine flare to cannon turned muzzle. “Tower” marked Brown Bess lock with orig cock, has bridled friction frizzen. Continental style newer stock with deeply fluted butt has blacksmith made iron furniture, and stock has some relief carving around ramrod channel holding ebony rod with horn tip. CONDITION: Fair to good. All metal parts cleaned. Brass with many dings. Iron parts considerably pitted. Newer stock refinished, with large repairs to comb, and along bbl channel. BRITISH FLINTLOCK SADDLE RING CARBINE, CIRCA 1800.
NSN. Cal. 65. 34-1/2″ overall, 19-7/8″ bbl with fixed front sight and short front blade. English commercial proofs on left breech, lockplate marked with crown and “GR” forward of hammer and “ALLPORT” on tail. Brass mounted other than iron J-shaped saddle ring bar. Based on proofs, gun is most likely a Napoleonic era Yeomanry weapon or carbine of a Volunteer unit. CONDITION: Very good overall. Appears orig and complete with exception of replaced hammer screw. Bbl retains thinning brown finish, lock is cleaned and grey/bright, brass has been cleaned with light mustard patina. Stock is sound with cosmetic blemishes expected after 200 years, well fit. UNUSUAL OVER-UNDER FLINTLOCK PISTOL BY SMITH OF LONDON.
NSN. Cal. 50 cal. Integral 4″ bbl/ breech/ breech iron group, with platinum touch holes and gold band at breech end, is engraved “SMITH LONDON” on top flat. Bottom flat is marked “7K-S 1010”. Locks with very unusual external mainsprings which double as frizzen springs connect to small reinforced cocks with swivels. Locks also feature sliding safeties, waterproof pans, and bridled frizzens. Locks are engraved with feather borders, and some scroll. Steel trigger guard has shield and floral engraving on bow. Well marbled European walnut stock with checkered bag grip, has steel cap with screw-in loading rod. CONDITION: Good. Metal parts retain essentially all of a fine of the period English refinish. SN NA. Cal. about 65. Twist steel octagon bbls. are 4-1/4″ long with smooth bores. Top flats are marked “London.” Bbls feature platinum flash hole plugs and bands at breach with steel front beads. Engraved tangs have integral V-notch rear sights. Locks are marked “Blanch.” and have floral and sunburst engraving. Key fastened walnut stocks have checkered wrists and German silver wrist plates. Engraved trigger guards have fancy pineapple finials. Brass-tipped hardwood ramrods are held by engraved steel thimbles. Key escutcheons are German silver. CONDITION: Both are in fine condition. One bbl retains 50% fading brown finish, the other has faded to gray. Both show spots of fine pitting. Lock plates retain traces of case colors blending with gray patina. NSN. Cal. about 62. Bbls are 8″ with octagon shanks and faceted transition to rnd forward portions with slightly flared muzzles.Top flats are marked “London”. Left flats have British proof marks. Brass lock plates are marked “HADLEY”. Bbl shanks, lock plates as well as iron top tangs, hammers and frizzens have border and floral engraving. Plain triggers. Pin fastened walnut stocks with relief carved flutes and moulded borders around top tangs. Silver finished brass fittings include grotesque buttcaps, fancy trigger guards with long tangs, and pierced floral side plates and fancy wrist plates. Horn-tipped ebony ramrods. The thimble and pipe are brass on one pistol and iron on the other. CONDITION: Both are in good condition. Brass parts have clean appearance. Iron parts have faded to gray. Brass fittings retain 90% silver plating. Stocks are refinished. One stock has added wood repair above lock with repaired crack near tip. The other stock has spots of filled repairs in forward areas. FINE QUALITY PAIR OF OVER UNDER DOUBLE FLINTLOCK PISTOLS BY REDDELL.
NSN. Cal. 60. 7″ OU bbl groups with bridled steel ramrods, are Birmingham proofed and marked “LONDON” on tops. Touch holes are lined in platinum. Fully waterproof flintlocks have roller frizzens, serpentine cocks, and sliding safeties. Pistols are iron mounted and have checkered bag grips and steel caps. CONDITION: Good, complete, and original. Cleaned to dark pewter to brown with overall light pitting on bbls. Locks smooth. Stocks rate fine, original finish, and are sound. Thumb operated sliding release is located on top tang. Lock is marked “JACKSON”. Lock hammer, top tang and trigger guard have floral engraving and fancy borders. Plain trigger. Key fastened walnut stock with checkered wrist and lion’s head buttcap. Trigger guard, pineapple finial plate, faceted thimble and sgl pipe are iron. German silver fittings include four key escutcheons and rectangular wrist plate. Brass tipped hardwood ramrod. CONDITION: Fine. Bbl retains 90% lightly faded brown finish showing small spots of corrosion. Knife blade has good fire blue color. Lockplate has fading case color finish. Trigger guard and other iron fittings retain 70% blue. Sound stock with orig finish shows numerous dents, dings, scratches and handling marks. Mechanics are fine. FINE BRASS BLUNDERBUSS BARREL FLINTLOCK GREAT COAT PISTOL WITH SPRING BAYONET BY JOVER.
NSN. Cal. .89 at muzzle. 6″ Brass cannon blunderbuss bbl transitions to round from octagonal breech section, stamped with Birmingham proofs. Bbl is fitted with 5″ steel spring bayonet retained by latch on top tang. Small lock with non-waterproof pan, bridled roller frizzen, serpentine cock, and back sliding safety is marked “JOVER”. Furniture is of brass. Trigger guard has raised acorn finial. Plain European walnut stock extends to muzzle flare and has bag grip. Short ramrod with brass tip has steel worm tail. A really neat small sized pistol. CONDITION: Good. Brass is a fine mustard patina after old cleaning. Lock cleaned to silver gray. Stock is fine with most of what appears to be its orig finish. Pin fastened rnd butt walnut stock. Brass fittings include acorn finial trigger guard, sideplate, wrist plate, thimble and sgl pipe. Hardwood ramrod. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl and other brass parts have acquired a light patina. Lock finish has faded to grey and shows some light pitting. Sound stock showing handling marks with small chips around lock. Dark bore. NSN. Cal. 60. (.655) 10-1/4″ Octagon Damascus bbl with under rib, is engraved “LONDON” on top flat. Patent breech with silver lined touch hole and two platinum bands is fitted with U-notch rear sight. Breech iron is scroll engraved. Engraved lock with flat plate high breasted serpentine cock, fully waterproof pan, and bridled frizzen with roller is marked “HOLLIS” in oval brass poincon. Trigger is set. Steel trigger guard with finger spur has pineapple finial. Checkered grip has silver oval and band on bottom, matching silver oval on left side, silver nose cap, and shaped silver escutcheons for captive side bolt holding bbl. Ramrod has brass tip and tail with steel worm under cap. CONDITION: Good as refinished. Bbl with excellent re-brown, has good definition of pattern. Lock has re-hardening over pitting. Trigger guard is a gray brown patina. Stock lightly refinished, sound, but with a few cracks along bbl channel. Tip of saw handle has repair. TWO RARE ALL METAL LONDON PROOFED FLINTLOCK PISTOLS.
NSN. 1) Rare “GALLISSE, LONDON” marked rotating 4-bbl flint with two hammers. Levered trigger guard acts as lock for rotating cylinders. Gun is engraved overall. 7″ overall with four 2″ screw-in bbls. 2) Nicely engraved 5-1/4″ single shot with removable 1-1/2″ cannon muzzle bbl. London proofed and maker marked in script on right side. PROVENANCE: Outstanding estate collection of Confederate and historical arms of Morris Racker. CONDITION: 1) Good overall. Appears complete. Functional including sliding safety. 2) Frizzen safety lock only engages if pin is pushed manually. Otherwise appears functional though hammer hard to release when fully cocked. FINE CIRCA 1810 MAKER MARKED ENGLISH FLINTLOCK PISTOL EPROUVETTE.
NSN. Eprouvettes were utilized for testing potency of gun powder and various ingenious devices are found in many forms including this unique “FISHER / LONDON” marked pistol style with a V-spring and graduated scale which would show larger numbers for stronger powder supposedly. It is interesting to note that eprouvettes became obsolete when scientific evidence published by Mordicai for the American army proved these measurements almost worthless just prior to the Civil War. This curiosa are popular collector items that not often come to market especially in such fine functional condition. CONDITION: Fine overall, traces of finish in protected areas, markings crisp, metal overall gray patina with staining and pinprick pitting. SN NA. Cal. about 48. 2-1/8″ rnd smooth bore removable bbls. Iron box lock actions with center mounted hammers and sliding tang mounted safeties. Left sides of actions are marked “DAVIDSON”, right sides marked “LONDON”. Both sides have patriotic theme engraving. Bottom of frames have series of 3 British proof marks. Iron trigger guards have rolled edged and 8-pointed star engraving. Rnd butt walnut stocks. CONDITION: Very good. Metal finish has faded to gray. Stocks show dents and handling marks. SN 18715. Cal. 36. 11-1/4″ overall. Eight 5″ bbls in unusual cluster. Four inside bbls with longer cones. Bbls are rotated by hand and locked with a spring loaded projection on right side of iron frame. Bbl and frame are both marked “LONDON 18715” of unknown origin or vintage. NSN. Cal. 52. 6-1/4″ Octagon to round bbls, 11″ overall. Bar type locks. All metal construction with rams horn butts and ball triggers. Belt hooks are on left sides. All surfaces are engraved with lightly cut scroll. Scottish themed stands-of-arms are on tops of grips, and right sides of butts. CONDITION: Good. NSN. Cal. about 65. 6 1/2″ rnd bbl with raised flats and rifled bore. Lock is engraved “F & A PENEL/FRERES” of St-Etienne 1746-60(Stockel, p. 933). Lock hammer, top tang and breach end of bbls have floral engraving. Pin-fastened walnut stock. Lock, sideplate, top tang and ramrod channnel areas have moulded borders with deep relief carving behind thimble and top tang. Engraved brass fittings include side plate thimble, trigger guard with fancy finial and buttcap. Forearm tip is made of buffalo horn. Button-tipped iron ramrod. CONDITION: Good. Clean gray metal. NSN. Cal. 58. 6-1/4″ Swamped octagon bbl has gold damascened bands at breech and muzzle ends and French proofs. Flintlock with semi-waterproof pan, bridled friction frizzen, and serpentine cock is engraved “Lacaille Chaxxx a Bloie” under pan. European walnut stock with steel capped flared checkered grip extends to muzzle and is iron mounted. Baleen ramrod with horn tip and steel tail is in one piece pipe/ thimble. CONDITION: Very fine, retaining most of its orig finishes. Somewhat soiled and lightly oxidized. Mechanically excellent. CASED PAIR OF HIGH ORIGINAL CONDITION TARGET PISTOLS BY PONDEVAUX OF ST. ETIENNE.
NSN. Cal. 50. 9-1/2″ Twist octagon bbls. Guns are numbered “1” and “2” on bright polished breech plugs and irons. Irons have rear sights. Island bar locks with tall serpentine sculpted hammers have rebated tails, and are engraved “Pondevaux St. Etienne” (working 1845 – 80). Dense European walnut half stocks with long fluted grips, have relief carving at forend tips. Pistols are bright polished iron mounted. Trigger guards with spurs, are relief engraved “G B C” (?) on bows. Butt caps are nicely filed. Pistols are housed in their orig walnut case lined in green cloth, which is french fitted for pistols and a fine array of orig high quality accessories including brass loading rod, steel bullet mold, ebony handled lead pouring ladle, ebony loading mallet, and a very fine Dixon and Sons small copper bodied bag flask. CONDITION: Excellent, very close to new, possibly unfired, retaining nearly all their bright polish and with only a bit of silvering on sharp edges of bbls through their orig brown. HIGH CONDITION CASED PAIR OF PERCUSSION TARGET PISTOLS BY F. GOSSET OF PARIS.
NSN. Cal. 52. 9″ Swamped octagon bbls with multi-groove rifling, are gold inlaid “F. GOSSET A PARIS” on top flats, and guns are numbered “1” and “2”. Breech plugs are case hardened and breech irons are fitted with integral sights. Case hardened locks with swept flat faced hammers are nicely engraved. Makers name and address are in two color gold on each plate. Triggers are set. Figured European walnut half stocks with no provision for ramrods, have shell carved tips and checkered flared grips carved around perimeter. Furniture is of iron. Trigger guards have finger spurs. Elm burl veneered case is lined in green cloth and is french fitted for pistols and a number of period accessories, including loading rods and rosewood hammer, mold, turnscrew, and a horn bodied brass powder flask. CONDITION: Excellent. Bbls retain nearly all of their orig brown. Breech plugs have a similar amount of case hardening color, which is also on locks. Other furniture shows considerable cleaning to bright silver with some color left where protected. Wood retains most of its french polish finish, and both pistols stocks appear to be sound, except with repair to forend tip of one pistol. The same pistol has repaired crack above lock screw escutcheon. Mechanically excellent. Case is very fine with some small marks and dings. Interior is fine with staining and compressions. NSN. Cal. .47. 10-1/2″ Fluted octagon bbls are engraved “Fni P. Lepage Moutier a Paris” on top flats. Pistols are numbered “1” and “2” on tops of engraved breech plugs and irons. Island type shaped bar locks have tall robust hammers and are nicely scroll engraved. This engraving extends to other iron furniture including spurred trigger guards and heavy grip caps. European walnut flared and fluted grip half stocks have heavy relief carving at tips with no provision for ramrods. AS FOUND, CASED PAIR OF PERCUSSION TARGET/ DUELING PISTOLS BY BRUNON FRERES WITH ACCESSORIES.
NSN. Cal. 52 groove diameter, multi groove rifling. 11″ Deeply etched twist bbls are fitted with case hardened patent breeches. Breech irons with integral rear sights have top straps, which extend almost to ends of butts. Case hardened back action locks fitted with flat faced hammers are engraved “BRUNON FRERES” “A St. ETIENNE”. Triggers are set. Double beaded trigger guards are case hardened. Nicely marbled European walnut stocks have flared butts with case hardened steel caps. Pistols are housed in their orig fancy veneered mahogany case, and are french fitted for guns, and a number of accessories, including boxwood loading hammer, boxwood and brass loading rod/ powder measure, cleaning rod, bbl shaped boxwood container with nipples, case hardened steel ball mold, copper bodied flask embossed with guns and laurel leaves, as well as a boxwood handled turnscrew. PROVENANCE: Consignors notes: The Brunon pistols were bought in Paris in the 1920’s by Sherman Kent, while studying for his dissertation. Mr. Kent began his career as a professor at Yale University; he later became one of the most significant and enduring personalities in the formative decades of the CIA, OSS and ONE. The pistols have remained with the family since their purchase. CONDITION: Excellent, as found. Pistols retain all finishes on wood and metal, with a number of light scratches and marks. SN NSN/NSN. Cal. 22 BB CAP. 10-1/2″ Blued octagon bbls have adjustable target sights. Flobert type actions with firing pin integral with hammer nose/ breech block are case hardened.Marked J.H. Jamar on underside of barrel, visable when stocks are removed. Half stocks of figured European walnut have nicely checkered flared grips. Iron furniture is color case hardened. Trigger guards have finger spurs. Grips are steel capped. Pistols are housed in fancy walnut veneered case with rosewood trim. Shaped German silver plaque on top is engraved with coat of arms and “A. De Lanefranque”. Case is lined in scarlet cloth and french fitted for guns. Orig accessories include an ebony handled turnscrew and an ebony oil bottle. This magnificent cased pair of pistols were acquired in 1955 from the collection of Charles Porter. This collection was offered August 1955 by the auction house of Robert C. Eldred. PROVENANCE: Consignor states that they were made by J. H. Jamar. CONDITION: Excellent, retaining nearly all orig finishes on wood and metal. Metal has scattered flaking and light rust spots. Wood has some dents and light marks, especially one pistol with ten or so small dents on left side near action. Case is good. Top has some cracks and separation of banding. FINE AND RARE OTTOMAN GOLD AND SILVER MOUNTED BLUNDERBUSS CIRCA 1800 MADE FOR OTTOMAN PALACE GUARDS.
NSN. Cal. 1.25. This beautiful and elegant blunderbuss is from a known series of similar arms thought to have been made for Ottoman palace guards. 30″ overall with 19-1/4″ swamped bbl flaring to 1-1/4″ at muzzle. About 60% of surface of bbl is inlaid with gold arabesques as is lock, cock and battery. Stock is profusely inset with silver wire and gilted brass & silver insets over most of its length as seen in photos. The brass mounts are relief cast with gilt. CONDITION: Very good to fine overall. Steel is an overall gray patina with virtually all of gold insets intact. Insets and stock are 98% intact with discernible loss of two narrow 4″ silver strips framing buttplate. Top of buttplate comb has 2-1/2″ contemporary silver arabesque which is not en suite with the rest of decoration. Stock is sound with one small noticeable hairline and a few small reductions. FINE OTTOMON FLINTLOCK BLUNDERBUSS WITH PROFUSE DECORATED STOCKS AND RELIEF CARVED GOLD AND SILVER INLAYS.
NSN. Cal. 1.35″. 30-1/2″ overall, 18-1/2″ heavily swamped blunderbuss flaring to over 1-1/4″ at muzzle. Gun is profusely inlaid throughout its length with silver plaques under gilted pierced inlay. Bbl and lock have extensive silver relief inlay over most of their surface. CONDITION: Fine overall. Bbl and lock retain strong traces of blue and case colors in protected areas. Decorative plaques and piercing appear complete retaining strong traces of gilt in protected areas. Top jaw screw appears to be brass and a later replacement but is a well-made restoration.
