VERY FINE AND RARE CASED INSCRIBED SMITH & WESSON MODEL 1, 1ST ISSUE REVOLVER, 3RD TYPE.

SN 1442. Cal. 22. 3-3/16″ bbl. These early 1857-58 manufactured Smith & Wesson revolvers are quite scarce in any configuration but quite rare in high condition such as this example retaining most of its orig finish, especially with Smith & Wesson embossed hard rubber case. Buttstrap is engraved “J.H. ROWE”. PROVENANCE: The collection of Robert Roughton. CONDITION: Very fine overall. Bbl retains over 80% orig bright blue finish, cylinder, has about 30% thinning blue finish. Frame retains about 90% tarnished silver finish. Mechanically crisp with bright shiny bore. VERY FINE EARLY 2-PIN CIVIL WAR SMITH & WESSON OLD MODEL ARMY REVOLVER WITH FACTORY LETTER.

SN 281. Cal. 32. This is among the first of the Model 2 Smith & Wessons, rarely seen in high condition with 2-pin frames. This was a popular Civil War sidearm among officers, especially with the longer 6″ bbl as this example. This gun is in standard configuration with 1-line bbl address, blue finish with rosewood grips. PROVENANCE: The collection of Robert Roughton. Factory letter indicating that this was shipped on August 23, 1861 to J. W. Storrs – NYC. CONDITION: Very fine. Gun retains 60-70% orig bright blue finish with balance mottled plum. Grips retain 90% of their orig factory varnish. Mechanically crisp with bright shiny bore. 52332-46 JS (2,000-3,000) – Lot 3203

COLLECTOR’S LOT OF THREE ANTIQUE SMITH & WESSON PISTOLS.

1) SMITH & WESSON NO 2. SN 4556. Cal. 32 RF. Bbl 6″ oct with rib & semi-circular German silver front sight. 6-shot rnd cyl. Blue finish. 2-pc rosewood grips. CONDITION: Very good. Exterior retains 20% fading blue in protected areas showing scattered small spots of very light pitting. Area above bbl latch shows small dents. Grips show wear spots with scattered handling marks. Bore has dark appearance with largely intact rifling and scattered pitting. All six chambers show some pitting. Mechanics are fine. 2) SMITH & WESSON NO 2 ARMY. SN 50240. Cal. 32 RF. 5″ bbl, full blue finish, 2-pc smooth walnut grips. Bbl shows 1-line Smith & Wesson address on top of rib. SN is stamped on butt of grip frame and on the inside of right grip. Assembly number “GG1” appears on rear face of bbl lug, front face of cylinder and left inside heel of grip frame. Cylinder is marked “PATENTED APRIL 3. 1855. JULY 5. 1859. & DEC. 19. 1863”. Right rear side of frame is engraved “J. W. PERIL HUNTINGTON”. CONDITION: Very good to fine. Bbl assembly is a mottled blue/grey patina overall with some blue left in protected areas. Bbl address is slightly washed out from cleaning. There is some staining on the rib and left side. Bore is bright with strong rifling. Frame shows 80% bright blue finish with a few small dents and scratches overall and some staining around the hammer. All markings are sharp. Inscription is sharp. Cylinder shows a generous amount of blue finish blending to plum/brown with a clear patent mark. Chambers are clean. Grips are very good and contain a considerable amount of varnish finish with most of the wear on left side. Mechanics are functional, half-cock notch is broken. A nice Smith & Wesson No. 2 Army that bears further research. 3) SMITH & WESSON 38 SA 2ND MDL. SN 31867. Cal 38 S&W. Bbl 5″ rnd with rib. Pinned semi-circular front sight with U-notch rear sight. 5-shot fluted cyl. Spur trigger. Nickel finish, blue trigger with case colored hammer. 2-pc checkered hard rubber grips. Frame & cyl have matching SN’s. Manufactured 1877-1891. CONDITION: Very good. 60% nickel showing spots of wear and light pitting. Hammer shows some case colors on sides. SCARE EARLY CIVIL WAR “2-PIN” SMITH & WESSON OLD MODEL ARMY REVOLVER WITH IVORY GRIPS.

SN 2335. Cal. 32. These earliest of Smith & Wesson old model Army’s were popular sidearms among Civil War soldiers and generally saw very hard use. This is a fine survivor retaining orig plate and well patinaed 2-pc ivory grips. Inside scratched into one grip is an indiscernible name and the date “October 16, 1913”. Accompanied by Mr. Ballard’s hand drawn display card. PROVENANCE: Lifetime collection of Roger Ballard. CONDITION: Very good overall. Gun retains about 40% plating with easily discerned bbl address, well patinaed ivory grips. Mechanics are fine with crisp rifled bore. SN 84445/30652/63102/84713. Cal 32. This is a fine group of nickel plated early Smith & Wesson rim fire revolvers. Group consists of 22 Cal. Model 1, Type 3, 3-3/16″ bbl. There are three 32 Cal. revolvers consisting of two Model 1-1/2 2nd Issue, 3-1/2″ bbls, and Model 1-1/2 Single Action revolver with 3-1/2″. Accompanied by Mr. Ballard’s hand drawn display cards. PROVENANCE: Lifetime collection of Roger Ballard. CONDITION: Good to very good overall. Model 1 and Model 1-1/2 SN 63102 retain most of their orig nickel. ALLEN & THURBER PEPPERBOX COLLECTION.

1) ALLEN & THURBER PEPPERBOX. SN 278. Cal. 36. This is a nice example of an early, pre-1845 dragoon pepperbox with “1837” patent dated 6-shot 5″ bbl cluster. This is a nice “as found” example with good patina. Accompanied by Mr. Ballard’s hand drawn display card. PROVENANCE: Paul Henry Collection; Lifetime collection of Roger Ballard, 2005. CONDITION: Very good overall, metal is overall dark grey/plum with traces of blue, all matching including SNs including grips which are well fit with good ivory patina. ESA 2) ALLEN & THURBER PEPPERBOX. SN 374. Cal. 36. This is a nice, honest example of an “ALLEN & THURBER”, about 6″ 6-shot bbl cluster, 10-1/2″ overall with spur trigger guard. Most often referred to as “dragoon size”. Accompanied by Mr. Ballard’s hand drawn display card. PROVENANCE: Lifetime collection of Roger Ballard. CONDITION: Good to very good overall, all matching SNs including grips. Spur on trigger guard is bent upward. Markings all discernible. Metal is overall dark plum/grey with pitting. Grips are well fit with ivory patina. Mechanically fine with smooth clear bores. ESA 3) ALLEN PEPPERBOX. SN 19/144/194. Cal. 31. This group has three, almost relic condition, 6-bbl cluster pepperboxes which all display beautifully. SN 144 still has two loaded chambers. Bbl lengths vary from 3-1/2″ to almost 6″ dragoon. All appear to be Allen patents, though markings only partially discernible. Accompanied by Mr. Ballard’s hand drawn display card. PROVENANCE: Lifetime collection of Roger Ballard. CONDITION: Fair to good overall. SN 19 and 144 appear “as found”, though SN 144 is missing shroud and trigger bow is loose. The dragoon, SN 194, has one frame screw restored. Ivory grips all fit well with varying ivory patinas. SN 199/203/422/442. Cal. 36. This grouping consists of three 36 Cal. pistols with 3″ to 4″ bbls and one 30 Cal. with 2″ bbl. Each variant is all matching, well marked and make a beautiful display as accompanied by Mr. Ballard’s hand drawn display cards. PROVENANCE: Lifetime collection of Roger Ballard. CONDITION: Very good overall. All guns have matching SNs to bbl, frame and grips, except SN 422 which has no SN on grips, however, they appear orig and well fit. THREE FINE ANTEBELLUM ALLEN & THURBER PEPPERBOX PISTOLS WITH IVORY GRIPS.

SN 85/194/375. Cal. 32. This is a nice grouping of 3 variant pepperboxes. There are two with 3-1/2″ 6-shot bbl clusters; one with raised flats between bbls marked “ALLEN & THURBER / WORCESTER”, “CAST STEEL” and “PATENTED 1837”. The pistol without flats has makers mark on bbl cluster but hammer is marked “ALLEN’S PATENT / 1845”. The third pistol has 2-1/2″ 5-bbl cluster marked in 3-flutes “ALLEN & THURBER”, “WORCESTER”, and “PATENTED 1845”. Ivory stocks are all factory and SNd. Accompanied by Mr. Ballard’s hand drawn display cards. PROVENANCE: Lifetime collection of Roger Ballard. CONDITION: Very good overall. The 5-shot retains about 50% thinning bright blue on bbl cluster and traces of blue on frame with overall plum/grey patina with pitting. SN 85 has been cleaned and is overall bright grey with staining and pitting, all matching except grips which are numbered “84”. SN 375 is brown/plum overall with traces of blue in protected areas, grips fit well, but are each numbered “255”. Mechanically fine with clear bores on each pistol. EXTREMELY FINE CASED ALLEN & THURBER PEPPERBOX REVOLVER.

Cal. 32. Gun is 7-3/4″ overall with 3-1/2″ 6-bbl cluster retaining most of its finish with equally fine accessories including a very unusual 2-cavity mold which molded “ovoid”, almost egg-shaped projectiles which several loose examples found in casing. Rare, early plunger flask and wood handled loading tool. All found in burgundy lined compartmentalized mahogany casing. PROVENANCE: Outstanding estate collection of Confederate and historical arms of Morris Racker. CONDITION: Extremely fine, retaining 98% orig bright blue on bbls. Bright case colors on hammer. Frame and trigger guard retain about 20% bright blue. Grips retain virtually all their orig high polish piano-type varnish. Mechanically crisp. Mold has staining and light pitting. GROUP OF 4 IVORY GRIPPED CIVIL WAR ALLEN & WHEELOCK PERCUSSION REVOLVERS.

SN 45/134/195/295. Cal. 32. This is a fine group of variant Allen & Wheelock side lock revolvers popular early in the Civil War. Included in this grouping are three larger frame 32 Cal. examples with 3″, 4″ and 5″ bbls, along with a petite 3″ bbl 22 Cal. example. These guns are rarely found with ivory grips and this group all have orig factory grips. Accompanied by Mr. Ballard’s hand drawn display cards. PROVENANCE: Lifelong collection of Roger Ballard. CONDITION: Good to very good overall. Guns have a mix of grey to brown patinas. Three guns have all matching SNs, including the grips, though the the 5″ example has matching SN “295” on frame, arbor and bbl with un-serialized but orig ivory grips. SN 18426/1355/3058. Cal. 28. This group consists of of a Warner pocket pistol with “1857” patented cylinder with well fit factory ivory grips, 3″ bbl. There is a silver plated and engraved Moore 6-shot revolver with “JAN 5, 1864” patented cylinder with factory ivory grips. Last gun in this lot is a 7mm Lefaucheaux revolver with polished bone grips made to emulate ivory. Accompanied by Mr. Ballard’s hand drawn display cards. PROVENANCE: Lifetime collection of Roger Ballard. CONDITION: Guns are very good to fine overall. The Warner is mottled grey overall with well fit and well patinaed ivory, fine mechanics and bright crisp bore. The Moore retains 30-40% orig silver plate on bbl, cylinder and frame with balance silver/grey with pitting. Right grip has large chip repair. Mechanics are fine with bright crisp bore. Lefaucheaux is cleaned, bright with scattered areas of staining and pitting. Well fit orig grips. Mechanics need attention, though function is fine intermittently, clean crisp bore. SN 3075. Cal. 31. Standard 2nd Model with 4″ bbl, 5-shot smooth cylinder, 3-line bbl address. This is a nice example of a popular Civil War era secondary pistol retaining much of its orig finish. CONDITION: Fine overall. Bbl & cylinder retain 20-30% orig finish. Frame retains 60% bright and muted case colors. 2-pc grips retain about 90% varnish with moderate edge wear. FINE ENGRAVED IVORY GRIPPED AMERICAN STANDARD TOOL COMPANY 22 CALIBER POCKET REVOLVER.

SN 16532. Cal. 22. Fine example of 3″ bbld 22 made by Manhattan Firearms, but marked on bbl flat “AMERICAN STANDARD TOOL CO NEWARK NJ”. Gun is white metal plated, engraved with 2-pc ivory grips. PROVENANCE: The collection of Robert Roughton. CONDITION: Very good to fine overall. Retains 95% orig white metal plating. All matching SNs including orig elephant ivory grips. NATIONAL ARMS ALL METAL NO. 1 SINGLE SHOT DERRINGER WITH RARE CUSTOM CASE.

SN 5779. Cal. 41 RF. Usual configuration with 2-1/2″ ovoid shaped bbl, German silver front sight, National Arms marking on top & patent date on bottom. It has a full silver plated brass frame with Nimschke style engraving with punch dot background. Grip has checkered panels and there is an arrow & asterisk on each side of bbl. Case is very unusual, about 6-1/4″ long x 3-1/4″ wide x 1-7/8″ high. It has brass latch on front and strap hinges on each end. When latch is released and lid is lifted it rotates to back and underneath to form a stand for the base. Interior is full doe skin lined with form fitted partition for pistol & a cartridge block holding four rds. PROVENANCE: Dr. Frank Miller Estate Collection; Outstanding estate collection of Confederate and historical arms of Morris Racker, 2008. CONDITION: Pistol is fine. Bbl retains a plum/brown patina & frame most of its orig silver plate. Hammer has broken ears of spur and will not hold in half-cock. Otherwise mechanics are fine, strong bright bore. Case is dry and showing wear and soil, but completely intact. Interior of base is lightly soiled and stained with one scuff in leather. SN 18384/161. Cal. 32 RF. 1) Shatuck “Unique” 4-bbl pistol made in Hatfield, Massachusetts. 1-3/8″ bbl cluster. 2) Cal. 32. James Reid New Model “MY FRIEND” sgl-action knuckle duster. This particular example is made in early 1880’s with enlarged finger hole marked on left side of frame “REID’S NEW MODEL 32 / MY FRIEND”. Standard configuration 5-shot with 2-1/16″ bbl. CONDITION: 1) Fine overall retaining much of it orig nickel finish with old cleaning and pitting. Mechanically fine with bright smooth bore. 2) Very good to fine overall. Crisp engraved patterns. 1) FRANK WESSON VEST POCKET. NSN. Cal. 22. 2″ bbls. Brass frame. 2nd type with horizontal 1-line marking and squared muzzles. Rnd ring type hammer, sometimes referred to as the “Watch-Fob” model. Rosewood grips. Bbls swivel on center pin. CONDITION: Fine, with a pleasing patina to brass. Bbls and hammer retain a fine amount of orig high luster blue. Markings are clear. Grips are fine with minor handling marks. Fine mechanical function. Bores have some pitting. 2) STAR VEST POCKET. SN 3. Cal. 22. 2″ bbl. Nickel finish. Top of bbl marked “STAR VEST POCKET”. All external numbers match. Rosewood grips. Inscribed on back strap “DMG” in script. CONDITION: Very fine with light handling marks. Most of the orig blue on hammer and trigger, most of the orig nickel plating on frame and bbl. Some very minor surface rust on front strap and butt. Markings are clear. COLLECTOR’S LOT OF ANTIQUE CARTRIDGE PISTOLS.

1) MOORE FRONT LOADING REVOLVER. SN 1025. Cal. 32. Teat Fire. 3-1/4″ bbl, blue and silver finish factory engraved, 2-pc walnut grips. Bbl shows correct 1-line Moore address rolled on the top. SN is stamped on bottom of bbl behind lug. Last 2-digits of SN appear on the left inside of grip frame on cylinder ratchet, rear bbl lug, and inside each grip. “20” with inspector “K” is stamped on wedge. This is possibly a factory error. Inspector initial “K” is seen on bbl lug, cylinder ratchet and on grip frame. Cylinder is marked “D.WILLIAMSON’S PATENT JANUARY 5. 1864”. Engraving is of the standard factory pattern with slight coverage on the bbl and scroll decoration on either side of the frame and recoil shield. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl shows traces of blue finish with balance a mottled brown patina. Top of bbl has been slightly battered on address. Markings are clear. Bore is dark. Frame retains 50% silver finish with balance showing brass frame. Engraving is sharp, markings are sharp. Cylinder retains 20% bright blue blending to plum/brown patina with some staining. Patent mark is sharp. Grips are very good, intact and show most of the orig finish. Mechanics are crisp. A nice example of a Moore revolver that was a circumvention of the White Patent. These revolvers were very popular in the mid-1860’s. One of about 30,000 manufactured between 1864-1870. 2) REMINGTON 1871. SN 1224. Cal. 50 CF. 8″ rnd bbl. Blue and case colored finish. 1-pc American walnut grip with American walnut forestock. Bbl shows no apparent marks. Frame shows 2-line Remington address and patent mark on left side “P”,”S” inspector marks also appear on left side. SN is stamped on the inside of the upper and lower tang. SN’s match. 1899 is also stamped on the upper tang, which is a military rebuild number as the bbl seems to be a replacement. Grip shows “C.R.S.” cartouche on left side. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl is a dark plum brown patina overall with some roughness at muzzle. Sight is full sized. Bbl index mark is slightly off. Bore is dark with traces of rifling. Receiver is a mottled silver grey patina with slight traces of case color remaining. Breech block and hammer are both dark brown patina. Stocks are very good. Cartouche is legible. Grip has repair at heel. Grips and forearm show mars and dents overall. Mechanics are functional. 3) . .38 Cal. 1 3/4″ bbl. Nickel finish 5-shot double action revolver w/ French proofmarks. Bird’s head grip, hammer block safety lever on left side of frame. Fine foliate engraving pattern over most of the frame and cylinder. Celluloid smooth faux-ivory grips. CONDITION: Very Good. Most nickel finish is intact with thinning and light oxidation overall. Grips are sound w/ minor splitting at toe and have been filled w/ epoxy for stability.Mechanics are good. Bore has sharp rifling. 4) E.A. PRESCOTT POCKET MODEL. SN 36. Cal 32 Rf. 4″ oct bbl with semi-circular front sight. 6-shot rnd cyl. Short grip style brass frame with spur trigger. 2-pc walnut grips. Assembly no. 36 is found underneath left grip. Includes a hand made wood storage box with Sears & Roebuck cartridge guide in lid. Case contains wood cartridge block, small glass oil bottle, and home-made steel ejector pin. CONDITION: Fair. Iron parts have faded to gray with spots of finish. Bbl shows wear at muzzle with weak markings. Brass frame shows pleasing aged tarnish with scratches and series of small dents around cyl pin area. Sanded and refinished grips show wear, left panel is cracked. Mechanics need attention. Cyl does not always rotate and lock properly. Dark bore with intact rifling and light pitting. VERY FINE AMERICAN STANDARD TOOL COMPANY 22 CALIBER POCKET REVOLVER.

SN 20942. Cal. 22. Very fine example retaining most of its orig finish. Made by Manhattan but marked on bbl flat “AMERICAN STANDARD TOOL CO. NEWARK, NJ”. Standard configuration, 3″ keyhole blued bbl and silver plated frame. PROVENANCE: The collection of Robert Roughton. CONDITION: Very fine overall. Bbl retains about 95% orig blue finish. Cylinder retains strong traces of blue and the 6 shot chambers retain most of their bright blue internally. Frame retains 95% silver plating which has an overall silver/gray patina. This Brevete, made in Paris with gutta percha grips marked “LE PROTECTOR SYSTEM TURBIAUX” on one side and reverse “BREVETE S.G.D.C. EN FRANCE & A L’ETRANGER”. Gun has functional sliding safety and is about 2″ in diameter, 1-1/2″ bbl. CONDITION: Good to very good overall, retaining about 40% orig nickel. LE PETIT GUARDIAN AND PROTECTOR RINGS/PISTOLS.

NSN. 1) Cal. 2mm Pinfire. 6-shot revolving cylinder set atop a German silver ring. Outside of ring is marked “Le Petit Guardian” surrounded by acanthus engraved embellishments. Mainspring wraps around ring to pinfire hammer, trigger is located on opposite side. 6-shot cylinder is held by detent ball and manually turned with knurled top bead. Steel parts are nitre blued. Ring is held in blue pear shaped clamshell case with fitted green velour interior having maker’s nameplate on lid. Case contains four 2mm pinfire casings. 2) Cal. 6mm percussion. Brass sgl shot ring gun marked “Le Petit Protector” on back and surrounded by acanthus engraving. Mainspring wraps around back of ring to hammer with trigger located on opposite side. Hammer is manually cocked to put miniature percussion cap on nipple and 6mm ball is loaded into chamber on front of ring. Housed in a leather covered case with cardboard cap box. Cap box contains three miniature percussion caps and one 6mm rnd ball. Inside of lid has presentation inscription “J.H. MATTHEWS,/From The Late A Maars”. CONDITION: 1) Fair. Metal parts retain 75% nitre blue. Ring shows light wear. Cylinder turns properly. Chambers show some pitting. Hammer does not hold in cocked position and needs attention. APACHE PINFIRE KNUCKLE DUSTER WITH KNIFE.

SN 4817. Cal. 7mm pinfire. 1-9/16″ six-shot fluted smooth bored bbl cluster. Fighting weapon popular with French underworld during the mid 19th century. Brass frame with spurless hammer and folding trigger. Left side is fitted with 3″ serpentine blade folding knife. Back of frame has pivoting brass knuckles that double as pistol grip. Frame and backstrap have checkered pattern engraving with floral highlights. Flats on bbl cluster have alternating floral and geometric design. Lower front of frame is marked with SN over “L.DGLNE INV UK”. CONDITION: Very good. Brass parts show some light tarnish. Bbl cluster retains blue blending with spots of freckling fading to patina.
