HUGE 2 BORE F. JACOB BARTELS WATERFOWLING SHOTGUN.
SN 8886. Cal. 2 ga.? Approx 1.16 Bore diameter, 1.082 Muzzle diameter. 1.190 Shell base diameter. This exceptionally large, well made gun has 39″ steel bbls with concave game rib, which are engraved “Fried. Jac. Bartels.” and “Weisbaden.” on tops. Bbl flats (locking lug) are stamped “8886” and “15 Gr P85 Gr BI”. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with German imperial proofs post 1891. Sling loop is screwed and soldered to bottom rib. Massive, blued steel, Collath type tip down action with large left pivoting locking lever with checkered grasping piece, and pin type cocking indicators, has border engraving with some minor flourishes of scroll. Front projection of action is engraved “No. 8886″. This number is also stamped near pivot point. Scrolled steel trigger guard attaches to trigger plate at two points, and is basket-weave engraved. Plain European walnut semi pistol grip buttstock measures 14-1/4″ over Silver type pad and 2-1/2″ cast iron extension. Stock features nicely cut checkering with broad mullered borders at grip, and double line borders on forepiece. Stock also features large right hand cheekpiece and has sling loop on toe line. Drop at heel: 2-5/16″, drop at comb: 1-1/2″. Weight: 26 lbs. 14 oz, LOP 14-1/4”. CONDITION: Fine. Bbls retain nearly all of an older re-blue, over some light pitting, as does action. Stock appears to have most of its orig finish. Pad has crystallized and deteriorated. Bores are excellent, bright and shiny. Bradley red front & center bead. Beavertail forend, checkered in diamond pattern. Inside of forend iron engine turned. Auto ejectors. Model 21 receiver has been upgraded to Style 21-4 factory engraving July 7, 1978, as per Cody letter, when the 3” chamber was factory modified. Cody letter reflects multiple subsequent return and repair records on this gun. Gun marked “SKEET” on floorplate ahead of trigger bow. Single selective trigger. Nicely grained walnut, Winchester capped pistol grip with checkered cheeks. LOP 13-1/2″ over brown Winchester solid pad. DAC 1-5/8″. DAH 2-3/8″. Auto safety. Accompanied by Cody Firearms Museum letter. CONDITION: Fine as refinished. Gun retains nearly all factory reapplied blue, small spot of oxidation at right muzzle. Mirror bores. CONDITION: Extraordinarily fine and near mint, this gun would make an outstanding benchmark Parker by which to judge others. This early hammer gun with unmarked bbl weight of 3 lbs. 4 oz. Water table with early maker mark “F.9.R.” and “B” prefix before SN. Dbl triggers and extractor. Beautiful flame grained straight grip buttstock checkered in three-point pattern with Nickel-shield on top behind tang and 14-1/4″ LOP over orig steel buttplate. Splinter forearm checkered in elongated double diamond pattern with wedge fastener and steel tip. Receiver is border pattern engraved, screw heads floral engraved and marked “Parker Bros” on sides. Very rare orig black walnut case fitted for this gun with approx 14 brass unmarked 11 ga shells, two primer tins with orig labels, one oil bottle, one cleaning rod, orig key and other accessories. Weight: 7 lbs. 11 oz. This exact gun is pictured on p. 234 of “The Parker Story” where it is captioned as a $135 Grade. This lot being offered without reserve. CONDITION: Extremely fine for a gun of this vintage. Bbls retain approx 85-90% bold vivid Damascus pattern just starting to tone. Buttstock and forearm are exceptional and orig and retain nearly all of their orig finish with light scratches and handling marks throughout. Receiver retains approx 40-50% strong orig case color particularly vivid on lock plates and top, toned on bottom. Steel buttplate retains 70% toned orig blued finish. Bores are very good with minor pitting, left more shiny than right. Mechanics are crisp. Case is in excellent overall condition for its age. Leather handles are gone, one latch is missing, but otherwise very good. Parker Gun Identification and Serialization book likely misidentifies this gun as originally having been produced with 30″ bbls, and as 12 ga. Keels are present and muzzles touch and this gun also fits perfectly in the case. Large trap forearm is near fully checkered in fleur-de-lis pattern with Deely release. Receiver is engraved in typical SA pattern with near full coverage scroll engraving and a large bust of flowers on floorplate. Weight: 7 lbs. 15 oz. CONDITION: Exceptional as restored and customized by Larry DelGrego. Bbl retains nearly all of its custom restored blued finish with some added engraving at breech.
