Two piece Colt walnut checkered grips with Fray-Mershon synthetic grip adapter. Single and double action operation. Bbl marked “OFFICERS MODEL 38 HEAVY BARREL”. Manufactured 1938 by serial number search. PROVENANCE: Property of Joseph Prather, former long time President of Griffin and Howe. CONDITION: Very good overall with bright bore and crisp mechanics. All visible numbers matching, grips have no numbers visible.Slight finish loss at muzzle and discoloration of blue finish above grips, light staining on sides of hammer.Fray-Mershon grips adapter is held in place by compression of grips to frame with no modification to either grips or revolver.These where the quint essential target guns of the day C&R 2) COLT OFFICERS MDL. Water table with “H” marking, SN, “Fox Proof” Stamp, “Barrels not guaranteed-see tag”. Double triggers, automatic ejectors, automatic safety. End knob pistol grip buttstock checkered in 2-point pattern with 13-15/16″ LOP over lined HRBP which is probably an older replacement. Splinter forearm with Deeley release checkered in 2-point pattern. Receiver is nicely wave border pattern engraved and engraved on sides “Ansley H. Fox”. Bore diameter: left -.735, right – .736. Bore restrictions: left – .043 (full), right – .046 (full). (Constriction starts approx 4″ behind muzzles, typical of Becker bored guns. Wall thickness: left – .036, right – .034. Drop at heel: 2-13/16″, drop at comb: 1-3/4″. Weight: 8 lbs. 9oz. LOP: 13-15/16″. CONDITION: Good. Appears as found. Bbls retain approximately 80% orig blue with scattered light spotting and a couple of areas of beginning corrosion toward muzzle. Receiver retains approximately 50% orig case color with beginning corrosion on bottom of frame at right side and on breach balls. Dbl triggers, automatic ejectors, non-automatic safety. Bbl flats marked with most intriguing marking “A.H. Fox 3 In. Mag. Duck” and “Barrels *** Guaranteed”. Capped pistol grip buttstock checkered in 2-point pattern with 14-1/8″ LOP over lined HRBP. Splinter forearm with Deeley release checkered in 2-point pattern. Receiver is lightly border engraved in standard HE pattern and marked “Ansley H. Fox” on sides. All visible SN’s match. Bore diameter: left -.749, right – .749. Bore restrictions: left – .049 (EXTRA FULL), right – .051 (EXTRA FULL). Wall thickness: left – .042, right – .041 . Drop at heel: 2-7/8″, drop at comb: 1-5/8″. Weight: 9 lbs. 1 oz. PROVENANCE: The Larry Kelley estate collection. CONDITION: Very fine, as refurbished. Bbls retain 96-98% of a quality restore rust blue finish. Buttstock and forearm are excellent with minor handling marks and retain most of an older restored finish, forearm checkering has been re-cut. Receiver retains most of an older, possibly Savage, Cyanide case hardened finish. Trigger guard has been re-blued, engraving is somewhat thinned. Bores are bright and shiny. Mechanics are fine. According to Michael McIntosh in his book “A.H. Fox the Finest Gun in the World”, pg 214, Burt Becker, Charles Askins, and John Olin, spent the summer of 1922 perfecting the Becker Bored Duck gun. This gun is likely amongst the first Becker Bored production guns given its SN. Rebated frame is fully engraved in classic Gough inspired oak leaf pattern with ducks on left, quail on right, and raised head fox on bottom. Receiver is nicely engraved in typical C pattern with woodcock on right, quail on left in ovals, pointing setter in detailed scene on bottom, all surrounded by well executed Fox scroll engraving. Receiver is nicely near full coverage scroll engraved in very early C Grade pattern with setter in circle on bottom. All visible SN’s match. WEIGHT: 7 lbs, 8 oz. Round knob pistol grip buttstock checkered in 2-point pattern and checkered side panels with 14-5/8″ LOP over what appears to be the orig Hawkins pad. Trap forearm with Deeley release checkered in 3-panel pattern. Receiver is nicely scroll engraved with about 40% coverage and marked “Fox” on both sides. All visible SN’s match. WEIGHT: 8 lbs, 5 oz. PROVENANCE: The Larry Kelley estate collection. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbl retains approximately 97% orig blued finish. Receiver retains nearly all of its bold orig case color just starting to tone on bottom and at back of top tang. FANTASTIC LOT OF HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS RELATED TO THE A.H. FOX GUN COMPANY.

Sourced by our consignor from descendants of the Godshalk Family, this lot is a Fox researchers dream come true. Included in the lot are orig patent papers issued to Ansley Fox and his business partners dating to 1910 & 1912. Also included is the orig trademark paperwork for “Fox Proof” dated to March 1915 along with a letter of receipt signed by Ansley H. Fox from 1910. Of great interest is also the A.H. Fox gun company insurance policy inventory dated May 1926 valuing all the equipment related to the company and bound in black hard bound book. Also included are the orig mechanical drawings for the Fox factory. A stock certificate signed by E. H. Godshalk showing his ownership of 52 shares in the Watson Arms Co. dated December 1919. There is also an ad proof for a Saturday Evening Post ad dated August 1914 and an orig photo of A.H. Fox Gun Co. display at an unknown exhibition. A First National Bank ledger which appears to be from the 1920’s for the A.H. Fox Co. CONDITION: Ranging from Fair to Fine. Interested parties should peruse this lot. Sgl selective trigger, automatic ejectors, automatic safety. Capped full pistol grip buttstock checkered with dbl Fleur-de-lis pattern, gold shield near toe and 14-1/4″ LOP over lined HRBP. Beavertail forearm with Deeley release and small triangular ebony tip. Receiver is nicely engraved with pheasant on right, goose on left, in standard 4E pattern with shaded floral engraving throughout. All visible SN’s match. WEIGHT: 7 lbs, 6 oz. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbls retain nearly all of an expert quality restored finish. Buttstock and forearm are superb and retain virtually all of what appears to be their orig hand rubbed finish, checkering is still crisp, there is a near invisible grain separation on forearm near screw at frame. Checkered nickel plated trigger, automatic ejector, no safety. Capped full pistol grip buttstock is of gorgeous flame grained American walnut checkered with dbl Fleur-de-lis at grip, checkered side panels with 14-1/2″ LOP over Ithaca sunburst pad. Trap forearm checkered in 5-point pattern with engraved Deeley release. Receiver is beautifully engraved with gold inlaid woodcock on right, gold inlaid pheasant on left, surrounded by well cut shaded floral engraving. Bottom of receiver with American Eagle and floral and geometric design engraving. All visible SN’s match. WEIGHT: 8 lbs, 7 oz. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbl retains 97-99% gorgeous orig blue with only a couple of very small areas of toning. Receiver retains virtually all of its bold orig case color. Breechface is superb and appears unmarred by shells. Buttstock and forearm are excellent with only minor handling marks, though there is scattered crazing in finish and there is a coast of what appears to be wax over the finish and in the checkering. Trigger guard retains virtually all of its orig blue finish. Screws are excellent. Bore brilliant and shiny. Mechanics are crisp. SN 454474. Cal. 12 ga. 28″ Bbls with matted rib are marked “2” and “4” on flats and are choked mod and full, with twin ivory beads. Case hardened action has non-automatic safety, pin type cocking indicators and gold-plated dbl triggers. Action is engraved in typical “5E” style with near full coverage fig leaves and figs with white gold inlaid game scenes in ovals on each side; strutting pheasant on left and a walking snipe on right. Bottom of action is engraved with classic Ithaca eagle. Finely crotch figured American walnut buttstock with typical “5E” fleur-di-lis checkering measures 14-5/8″ over serrated hard rubber buttplate. Matching splinter ejector forend has Deeley type release. Bore diameter: left -.733, right – .732. Bore restrictions: left – .035 (full), right – .019 (mod). Wall thickness: left – .027, right – .023. Drop at heel: 1-15/16″, drop at comb: 1-15/16″. Neutral cast. Weight: 6 lbs. 14 oz. LOP: 14-5/8″. CONDITION: Excellent, as completely and competently restored. This gun was obviously in fine condition before restoration, and the correct refinishing makes the gun appear to be new, with only a few very light handling and assembly marks in all finishes. Engraving is expertly re-cut. Checkering re-cut with great precision. Stocks finished in oil. The only hint that this gun has been refinished is the light marks and pitting on breechface, and a few old marks under finish in wood. Bores are excellent. Action is a bit loose with forend removed, but tight with forend installed. Bbls are slightly off face. Ejectors are in time. SN 127848. Cal. 12 ga. Beautiful high-grade deluxe shotgun with a gorgeous Damascus pattern. 30″ full choke bbl, matted top rib with very fine raised matted panel on the receiver. It has beautifully grained, extremely fine checkered, French walnut wood with round forearm and Creedmore grip stock, 13-1/2″ LOP over orig Marlin lined HRBP. The receiver is beautifully engraved with a large oval vignette of four partridge in a mountain scene. The partridge in the foreground is semi-relief engraved. The right side has two vignettes, the larger is a semi-relief standing woodcock with pine forest in the background and the smaller vignette on the bolt has two flying woodcock. The balance of the receiver has about 40-50% coverage, very fine, extremely well executed arabesque scrolls with several different types of border patterns. There are other smaller flourishes of engraving over the top of the receiver and top tang with two nice flowers on the bottom of the receiver. No engraver’s signature was observed. Four screws on right, three screws on left are gold plated as is trigger. WEIGHT: 7 lbs, 7 ozs. PROVENANCE: Estate collection of Russell Grinnell. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Bbl retains about 90% dark Damascus pattern and the receiver 60-70% orig blue. Trigger, screws and pins were all orig gold plated. Trigger retains about 60% gold wash.
