POLYPHON UPRIGHT MUSIC BOX. Model style # 54 which plays 24 1/2″ discs.Case is walnut in wonderful condition with carved pillars on the top section of the cabinet and carved cornices on the bottom. The model # 54 was the most popular of all large Polyphon styles.Several case design variations were made, different from each other mainly with respect to the top crown and the front column.Wonderful machine.Included are 12 discs that are in the original bottom storage bin rack and 4 new discs as well.CONDITION:The coin mechanism slot has been plugged up on the side of the case which is normal but the innards are still obvious.The box plays very well and no obvious flaws. RARE LARGE McCORMICK REAPER PAPER SIGN. A wonderful 19th century image playing off a famous painting that hung in Washington of Western exploration “Westward The Course of Empire Takes Its Way.” In the McCormick “version” the families come over the bluff to see a fertile valley with wheat being cut by their reapers. SIZE: 37″ x 27″ excluding mat and frame. Rare and believed to unique. CONDITION: Colors bright and clean. Originally the sign had rolling wrinkles which resulted in some tearing, all of which have been repaired and the sign stabilized by being professionally linen backed. RARE PALMER HOUSE CHICAGO HOTEL SIGN. A most impressive sign promoting the opening of “The Palace Hotel of the World.” The hotel was completed in 1873 and began taking its first guests in November of that year. This promotional sign probably coincides closely with the opening. The graphics are tremendous, with insets showing their halls, parlors, dining rooms, bridal chamber, etc. Arguably the best hotel sign known. Believed to be unique. Size: approx. 36″x 27″ excluding the original frame. CONDITION: Very good with a small 2″ tear at the lower right and small rust stain marks just after “Chicago” at the bottom. Light overall toning. LARGE HOTEL MARLBOROUGH NEW YORK CITY PAPER SIGN. A very bold image of the hotel, ca. 1890-1900, chromolithographed by Thomas & Wylie, NY. SIZE: 31″x26″ excluding mat & frame. CONDITION: Very Good. From the matting it appears that the top margin is cut off, which is not the case. This piece was matted this way because the upper right corner margin was damaged. Rather than repair it, they matted it this way. ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD WATCHES TIN SIGN. Very nice tin over cardboard self framed sign, chromolithographed, ca. 1900-1910. EARLY EAGLE PENCILS CARDBOARD SIGN. Bold and dramatic graphics that are very eye-catching. Printed by Wemple & Co., NY, ca. late 1870’s with varnished surface. (This process popular in the 1870’s was thought to act as a preservative of the colors. It was basically discontinued by 1880, as although the colors remained true, the varnish itself tended to yellow. This is one the few signs of this type where the varnishing has had minimal effect). STAFFORD’S INK EMBOSSED TIN SIGN. A nice chromolithographed tin sign printed by Sentenne & Green, NY with strong embossing, making the bottle seem very life-like. SIZE: 12″x16″ excluding frame. A very impressive sign from this famous Rochester, NY brewery, showing their plant mostly in gold paint that “lights up” beautifully with reflected light. Believed to be unique. 1863 BLACK VALLEY RAILROAD TEMPERANCE POSTER. Printed by Ch. Crosby and lithographed in color by E. Ackerman, Boston. The Black Valley Railroad was an 1860 metaphor for the road to hell for those who drank alcohol. The train depicts partiers and drunks at the “drunkard’s curve” station, the last stop before going into the mountains, the home of the devil, storms, violence and ultimate death – the last stop “Destruction at Dead River.” Much propaganda in the text at the bottom. RARE FELL’S SPICES/MUSTARD WELLS & HOPE TIN SIGN. Fantastic graphics and very early look make this a very important Wells & Hope printed tin sign. Believed to be unique. SIZE: 19 3/4″ x 27 3/4″. CONDITION: Fair-Good. The central vignette and lettering are original but much of the decorative border has been inpainted. Light denting at right. EARLY BOXING 1860 SAYERS – HEENAN CHAMPIONSHIP FIGHT OF ENGLAND & AMERICA GROUPING. Fantastic 1860 lithograph of the fight. What makes this especially great is that the hundreds of spectators all have different faces – quite an artistic achievement, “Drawn and painted by James Ward Esq. Ex-Champion of England from photographs by Bonner…”Published by Scofield, London. Also accompanying are two framed hand colored woodcuts of each of the fighters. Certainly the granddaddy of all Indian and Henderson motorcycle or bicycle signs is this unique hand painted example made by the Ithaca Sign Works of Ithaca, New York for H. R.
