*EARLY IMPORTANT WALTHER, MOD. HP, P.38 PROTOTYPE PISTOL.
SN 1012. Cal. 9mm. Early Walther P.38 prototype, marked as “Mod. HP”, with heavy slide, internal extractor, rectangular firing pin, bbl with lug lightening cuts, anvil hammer, and earliest style checkered wood grips. Assembled following the AP series and prior to standard P.38 production, well documented and inside the short established serial range of 1000 – 1015 for preproduction guns. Serial number 1009 is the earliest known example, entirely in-the-white and pictured in Warren Buxton’s classic books “The P.38 Pistol, Volume II”, pg 153. This particular example, more fully finished, still has a 5″ in-the-white bbl, with drift adjustable front sight, whose lug extension has been internally lightened. The left side of the in-the-white slide is marked with Walther banner followed by a 2-line address that includes “Mod. HP” as part of the second line. Internal extractor, thick rear sight, and absent loaded indicator spring and firing pin block. The full SN “1012” only appears on the right side of the blued frame (no SN on bbl or slide). The take-down lever is marked with a small “2” on the inner surface and locking lug is numbered “41” on inner surface, the pistol has no other markings or proofs. Early style wood checkered grips with minimal thumb rest and left panel with round recess for lanyard loop. Extensive checkering over each side grip with wrap-around pattern to include backstrap. Neither grip has internal markings. Unmarked mag from a later gun with a matte finish. PROVENANCE: The Esteemed Collection Of Noted Expert And Author Warren Buxton. CONDITION: The bbl and slide assembly are in-the-white with portions having been more recently polished. The frame and associated small parts have approximately 95% of orig salt blue, with wear in expected areas from handling. Orig grips are in very good condition with oil staining and scattered surface dings as one might expect from a test pistol. Excellent mag. Bright bore with minor oxidation and sharp rifling. Perfect manual mechanics with missing loaded indicator spring and firing pin block as previously noted. An extraordinarily scarce gun whose early developmental features easily eclipse partial restoration. 51568-31 LMA (7,500-15,000) C&R – Lot 1571

*SUPER RARE WALTHER P.38 PISTOL, MOD. HP, COMMERCIAL-MILITARY HYBRID, SN 7!.

HP, with 5″ bbl having drift adjustable front sight and fixed rear sight. Left side of slide marked with the usual Walther banner followed by 2-line address that includes “Cal. 9 m/m” and suffixed by “Mod. HP”. Safety marked with an “S” and “F”, the colored highlighting no longer present. The right side of the slide is marked “Claude S. Thompson”. Mag marked with “P.38” on the left side and with a single Eagle/355 at top of spine. Major and minor components with original rough milled salt blue, locking block in the white. Although the SN might suggest an early tool room exploration and the Crown/N proofing on the bbl consistent with manufacture prior to 1941, the rough milling of the gun and the casting loss at the bottom of the front strap is typical of pistols in the 25,XXX serial range made around 1944. This exact gun was discussed in Warren Buxton’s “P.38 Pistol, Volume III” on pgs 189-192. It was described as a Second Type hybrid that combined commercial and military parts, approximately 15 pistols in this series, that were sequentially numbered 1-15, a circumstance that should generate a lot of interesting conversation and exploration for the new owner. PROVENANCE: The Esteemed Collection Of Noted Expert And Author Warren Buxton. CONDITION: Approximately 90-95% original salt blue with the right side of the slide thinned and touched-up in the area of ownership application. Comparable condition grips and mag. Mirror bore. *IMPORTANT WALTHER P.38 PROTOTYPE PISTOL, “0” SERIES WITH LETTER SUFFIX.
SN 018A. Cal. 9mm. A few early development stage pistols were marked with a lower case letter “a” suffixed to the SN by hand after the guns were assembled. This was used to indicate that the gun had been further modified. It was Buxton’s opinion that the “a” suffixed developmental pistols had their modifications directed to the safety and firing systems, particularly as related to the retractable firing pin. This particular pistol is a later prototype with heavy slide, internal extractor, and rectangular firing pin. By this time the hammer had transitioned to the standard form though the 5″ bbl still has the early, lightened lug extension. The left side of the slide is marked with Walther banner and “P 38” followed by the SN “018a”. The right side of the slide has two” Eagle/359″ acceptance marks along with a “Crown/N”. Internal extractor and narrow rear sight. The “Eagle/359” proof is on the left side of the frame just behind the dismounting lever. The full SN “018A” appears on the left side of the frame, under the bbl, and under the locking lug with the abbreviated “18” on the top of the sight, transfer bar, take-down lever, slide release, and mag release. Early black plastic checkered grips, each panel numbered “18” and accepted with an “Eagle/359”. Mag is from a later gun, having a matte finished body, with “060” marked on the left side and “Eagle/359” on the lower spine. PROVENANCE: The Esteemed Collection Of Noted Expert And Author Warren Buxton; Pictured in Warren Buxton’s book “The P.38 Pistol, Volume III” pg 201. CONDITION: Approximately 97-98% bright orig blue, with two dings on the left side of the muzzle and sharp edge wear in the usual places as expected from careful handling. Excellent orig grips with crisp checkering and comparable condition mag. A wonderful early experimental P.38 that would grace the most advanced collection. 51568-5 LMA (20,000-30,000) C&R – Lot 1580

*EARLY AND IMPORTANT PRE-PRODUCTION P38 PISTOL.
SN 1019. Cal. 9mm. Early Walther P.38 prototype with lightened bbl lug, heavy slide, internal extractor, rectangular firing pin, anvil hammer. Assembled following the AP series and prior to standard P.38 production, well inside the short established serial range of preproduction guns. This particular example has a 5″ bbl whose lug extension has been internally lightened and marked with an Eagle/359 acceptance. The left side of the slide is marked with Walther banner and “P 38”. Internal extractor and narrow rear sight. The Eagle/359 proof is on the left side of the frame (very faintly) behind the dismounting lever. The full SN “1019” only appears on the right side of the frame (no SN on bbl, slide, or locking lug). Small parts are blued and unmarked except for slide release that has an Eagle/359 acceptance. Early black plastic checkered grips, each panel molded with four encircled codes, left panel having circled recess for the lanyard ring. Mag is from a later gun with the left side marked “P.38v/U”. Complete with brown hard-shell holster whose obverse surface is marked “A.KIND/HUNSTIG/1940”. PROVENANCE: The Esteemed Collection Of Noted Expert And Author Warren Buxton. CONDITION: Appears as a tool room assembly with a finished but unnumbered bbl mated to a very rough milled unfinished slide showing extensive staining and light oxidative speckling. Blued frame subsequently had both sides polished white at which point most of the Eagle/359 acceptance behind the dismounting lever was removed. The remaining blue would be estimated at 98%. Comparable condition grips and poor condition, unfinished in the white magazine with considerable staining and etching. Bright bore with sharp rifling. Manual function is unreliable and will need some tweaking. Excellent brown hard shell holster showing no suggestion of polishing or re-stitching. 51568-72 LMA (7,500-15,000) C&R – Lot 1581

*WALTHER P-38 PISTOL, CAL .45 ACP, AMERICAN EAGLE, IN PRESENTATION CASE.
SN S3. Cal .45 ACP. Highly customized P-38 to fire .45 ACP, marked to caliber and with an American Eagle, in factory presentation case. In what was undoubtedly a very time intensive project, someone customized a standard configuration P-38 by using a larger diameter bbl, recontouring the slide bridge, expanding the face of slide and opening up the magazine well to accept a modified 1911 magazine on a gun that otherwise had standard dimensions. Once the machine work was completed, the left side of slide was marked to reflect cal and steel frame was renumbered. This pistol now has a 5″ bbl with drift adjustable front sight marked “+0.25” and standard rear sight. Left side of slide is marked with Walther banner and two line Walther address that now stipulates “Cal. 11.25mm”. Usual S/F safety detentes. An American Eagle has been marked on right side of slide. Heavily refinished frame has been renumbered. “S3” and year dated “54” on left side. “Made in West Germany” on right side. Fitted with standard black plastic commercial panels that show a missing lanyard loop. Heavily polished magazine is marked “11.25mm” on bottom of floorplate. Complete with blue leatherette Walther factory presentation case whose lid is lined in silk with silver Walther banner. Velvet lined base bordered with cord. Secured with two spring loaded non-keyed chrome-plated locks. PROVENANCE: The Esteemed Collection of Noted Expert and Author Warren Buxton. CONDITION: Custom refurbished pistol retains at least 99% of hasty reblue. Grips are virtually new. Minimal magazine wear. Bright bore with shallow rifling. Perfect manual mechanics. Exterior of case near excellent. Lid liner separated from top of case and lining material shows staining and losses, particularly at pressure points. *Warning: As there was no attempt to beef up the frame this pistol may be dangerous to shoot. If that is the intent, THE NEW OWNER NEEDS TO HAVE THE GUN CHECKED OUT BY A COMPETENT GUNSMITH BEFORE SHOOTING. 51568-50 LMA (1,000-2,000) C&R – Lot 1588

*SUPER RARE WALTHER 9MM ULTRA PROTOTYPE SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL.
NSN. Cal. 9mm Ultra. Extraordinarily rare 9mm Ultra pistol made by Walther to interest the Luftwaffe in a pistol that was more powerful than the 9mm Kurtz but more compact then the P38. The exposed bbl is very similar in profile to a P38, while the balance of gun is reminiscent of the PP, particularly as concerns profile of the slide, hammer and frame. That said, the function is very different as the pistol functions as a locked breech via a rotating bbl and uses a levered arm recoil spring inletted into the left side of the slide. There is no hold-open feature. Push button magazine release. Grips are 2-pc panels, each side cut with a series of vertical serrations and secured to the frame with a single transverse screw. The gun is entirely unmarked with no proofs or SNs. The same applies to the magazine whose left side is drilled with 6 indicator holes and has a detachable floorplate as per a PP. Highly polished salt blue finish except for a fire blued safety lever and the sides of the frame that were later polished bright. This exact pistol is pictured on pg 106 of WALTHER VOLUME III by James L. Rankin, on pg 212 of THE P38 PISTOL, VOLUME III by Warren Buxton, and pg 143 of WALTHER THE DEUTSCHE LEGEND by Manfred Kersten. As the only known example of its type, it could well be the center piece for any advanced Walther collector. PROVENANCE: The Esteemed Collection Of Noted Expert And Author Warren Buxton. CONDITION: At least 95% of the orig salt blue finish with the sides of the frame polished to the white as previously noted. There is some dulling and thinning on the grip straps. Grips very good to excellent with a scattering of light handling dings. Same overall condition applies to the salt blued magazine. Bright bore with strong rifling. Perfect manual mechanics. 51568-11 LMA (20,000-30,000) C&R – Lot 1595
