*HAUNTING GERMAN DEATH’S HEAD LUGER WITH ORIGINAL HOLSTER AND SPARE MAGAZINE.

SN 98. Cal. 9mm. This pistol is an extremely low SN “DWM 1917” Luger that was factory re-worked after WWI and sold on the civilian market as indicated by the Crown over N proof marks. Part of the process of re-working these WWI pistols was to scrub orig markings and hence the “1917” chamber date and “DWM” on the toggle is very soft. It is also understood that in the early days of the SS, they were procuring weapons any way they could through non-standard channels and it was almost “any which way you can” get the weapon to the SS depot where it was then re-worked again and marked for SS use. This Luger has a Death Head on top of the chamber just forward of the ghost of the 1917 chamber date. It includes one un-numbered blue steel aluminum based magazine and another magazine numbered “3263” as well as an orig black leather holster maker marked “ROBERT LARSEN / BERLIN / 1935” followed by makers symbol which is a “K” surrounded by a sunburst. Orig Luger take down tool present. Visible parts appear matching. Toggle reads “98” with muzzle down and facing rear sight. Left grip panel marked with solitary “0”. Right grip panel no discernible mark. Consignor states he acquired this pistol and holster over 30 years ago from the veteran who brought it back. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish extremely fine to near excellent as arsenal/depot refinish with wear to high edges to grey metal particularly at muzzle and on take down plate. Straw on take down latch, trigger, and safety rather shiny. Bore is shiny and bright with some frosting to the lands and grooves. Grips are extremely fine with some wear to checkering. Holster also extremely fine with green verdigris at brass attachment points and some brassing to high outer edge of magazine pouch. Overall, a very attractive looking Luger rig. 51221-1 JWK (8,000-15,000) C&R – Lot 1558

*FANTASTIC AND AUTHENTIC GERMAN DEATH’S HEAD LUGER WITH ORIGINAL DEATH’S HEAD EMBOSSED HOLSTER.

SN 6745H. Cal. 9mm. Orig Death’s head Luger with holster as brought back. This gun was originally a “DWM” Imperial proof gun with crown over “N” proofs which was taken into SS service prior to 1941. The SS had great difficulty procuring ordnance equipment through normal channels prior to the invasion of Russia. It was their practice to acquire appropriate guns and parts where ever they could, scrub some of the markings, and mark them for their own service. Death’s head clearly visible above chamber with orig proofs as noted. Mag numbered 4701 does not match, nor do grip panels, otherwise numbers appear matching on frame, bbl, take down plate, take down latch, safety, toggle and extractor. Accompanying leather holster is also a period re-work with re-positioned belt loops and fastener and sports an orig Death’s head embossed on the outside of the flap. Illegible ink marking on inside of top flap with only partially legible makers mark on back of holster “NEU-ULM” with logo more clearly visible. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish fine, orig condition as captured with about 75% finish thinning to a pleasing gray patina and wear to bare metal at the high points, 30% or less of straw remaining almost exclusively in protected areas. Grips show wear to the checkering and all too typical chip missing below the safety. Bore is shiny and bright, worn lands with some light pitting. Leather holster is good to very good with solid stitching and completely serviceable starting to wrinkle and just beginning to flake. Truly authentic examples of this kind are seldom found and any shortcomings anyone could perceive with the condition are far outweighed by the scarcity of this specimen. Death’s head marking is haunting to any observer. 51390-4 (5,000-7,500) C&R – Lot 1559

*◊ EXTRAORDINARY WALTHER ARMEE PISTOLE WITH LONG BARREL, ALLOY FRAME, MATCHING STOCK AND TWO MATCHING MAGAZINES.

SN 010. Cal. 9mm. Walther only made 10 long bbl shoulder stocked Armee pistols for military review before production of the standard 5″ barreled APs, so only very rarely is such a gun offered for sale. As true for all of these early pistols, it has 7-7/8″ bbl with a ramped drift adjustable front sight and a 2-position rear sight. The reinforced AP slide has a 2-line address on the left side marked “Waffenfabrik Walther Zella Mehlis (Thur) / (Walther Banner) Armee-Pistole Cal. 9m/m.” The right side of the slide is marked “Walther’s Patent”. Most unusual in having an alloy frame, generally considered a later development. This all matching gun is serial numbered on the right side of the bbl, right side of locking lug, takedown lever, and right side of frame. Fitted with crisply checkered wood panels, each internally numbered “46” (crossed out), “12” (penciled out), and then “10” in pencil. All AP pistols in the series were shipped with two magazines that were numbered individually. In this case, the pistol would have been issued with magazine #010-19 (original) and #010-20 (a replacement). Complete with the orig matching stock made from two pieces of wood having the levered lug that snugly attaches to the tang. Complete with unique orig canvas carrier. PROVENANCE: Ex-Visser Collection; Collection of Dr. Geoffrey Sturgess; The Esteemed Collection Of Noted Expert And Author Warren Buxton. CONDITION: Superb 98% orig salt blue bbl and slide. Anodized frame with very slight thinning on the front strap. Comparable condition fire-blued safety. A previously noted stress crack near the rear of the slide cover has been perfectly repaired. Grip panels with orig varnish, deep crisp checkering, in same condition as the balance of the pistol. Mirror bore and perfect manual mechanics. Matching stock is in the same excellent condition with light unstained wood showing no cracks or chips. Original salt blue lug and hinge are in the same exemplary condition as is the canvas carrier. One of the most charismatic Walther pistols in existence, with important military history, and the forefather of the P38. 51568-20 LMA (60,000-90,000) C&R – Lot 1565

*◊ INCREDIBLE WALTHER AP MILITARY TEST PISTOL, SLOTTED STEEL FRAME, TWO MATCHING MAGAZINES, CORRECT STOCK.

SN 021. Cal. 9mm. Walther made a series of about 50 Armee Pistoles, all double action with an internal hammer, for testing prior to the military’s acceptance of the P38. This standard configuration gun may be the only example to have a 5″ bbl with a slotted frame and Crown/N proofing. As per most pistols in this serial range, the gun has a 5″ bbl, drift adjustable front sight and “U” notched rear sight. The sides of the slide were made with ridged reinforcement. The left side is marked “Waffenfabrik Walther Zella-Mehlis (Thur)” surmounting the Walther banner and the model denomination “Armee-Pistole Cal. 9mm”. The slide mounted safety lever, toward the rear of the slide, has the fire position denoted by a recessed red dot. The right side of the slide is simply marked “Walthers Patent”. The right side of the frame is marked with the serial number “021” in large digits that are repeated on the slide and the bbl. The locking block is numbered “019”. The bbl and slide are also stamped with a much smaller inspection number “21”. The pistol has standard wooden AP grips, the left with a circular recess for a lanyard ring. They are each stamped “21” with the number having been repeated twice on left panel. Complete with two factory orig matching magazines, numbered 021-41 and 021-42. Fitted with an incompletely finished and unnumbered stock made from two pieces of wood having the levered lug that snugly attaches to the tang. Unlike most stocks, this one does not have the spring-loaded plunger to help open the lid nor is there provision for the lid-mounted disassembly tool. The attaching iron is more brightly polished than usual with the locking lever having a small “0” on its inner surface. Complete with unique, orig canvas carrier. PROVENANCE: The Esteemed Collection of Noted Expert and Author Warren Buxton. CONDITION: At least 98-99% bright original blue with negligible sharp edge wear. No noticeable wear on the front strap. Excellent grips with sharp checkering and only minimal oil darkening. Same superb condition applies equally to each of the two factory matching magazines. Mirror bright bore. Perfect manual mechanics. Incomplete but nearly finished stock and canvas carrier in the same condition. Despite the mismatched locking block and the incompletely finished stock, this is truly a super rare Walther AP rig with two factory matching magazines. 51568-15 LMA (40,000-60,000) C&R – Lot 1566

*FANTASTIC WALTHER AP MILITARY TEST PISTOL, ALLOY FRAME, TWO MAGAZINES.

SN 049. Cal. 9mmp. Walther made a series of about 50 Armee Pistoles, all double action with an internal hammer, for testing prior to the military’s acceptance of the P38. Most had a 5″ bbl and an unslotted frame that was made of steel. A small number of the very last pistols had an alloy frame. Regardless of variation, Walther AP pistols are considered one of the Holy Grails of Walther and military pistol collectors. This late production gun has a drift adjustable front and a “U” notched rear sight. The right side of the alloy frame, that shows a little damage on right side just forward of takedown lever axle, is marked with the serial number 049 in large digits that are repeated on the slide, the bbl, and the locking block. All of these parts, except the locking block, are also stamped with a much smaller inspection number “28”. The pistol has standard wooden AP grips, the left with a circular recess for a lanyard ring. They are each stamped “28” with the number repeated in pencil. Magazine number 049-0 (or 049-partial”9″) has original finish but should have been numbered 049-98. The second magazine 049-97 is an exceptionally well-made replacement. PROVENANCE: The Esteemed Collection Of Noted Expert And Author Warren Buxton. CONDITION: Approximately 97%-98% bright original blue with sharp edge wear around the muzzle and forward slide. Frame has about 75-80% of anodizing with front strap thinned to a greenish hue. Small defects of right side of forward frame as previously noted. Mirror bright bore. Perfect manual mechanics. One of the toughest of the APs to encounter in high condition. 51568-27 LMA (27,500-35,000) C&R – Lot 1567

*WALTHER AP, FACTORY “SANITIZED” PISTOL WITH TWO MATCHING MAGAZINES.

SN 045. Cal. 9mm. Standard configuration Walther AP with all factory markings and SNs carefully milled out, except for a small “45” marked inside the frame just ahead of the trigger. The pistol is an otherwise standard configuration mid production AP pistol with 5″ bbl having drift adjustable front sight and “V” notched rear sight. Reinforcing ribs on each side of slide whose only marking is a small, matching “45” in location usually reserved for the assembly number. Bbl number has been neatly removed in the same manner and the locking block is a blank. Standard AP walnut checkered grips, each internally stamped “45” with left panel recessed for lanyard ring. The story accompanying the pistol is that the GI had captured it from a paratrooper. Why the orig markings and SNs were removed and what a paratrooper was doing with this sanitized AP pistol may never be known, but the work was done in the same manner of other factory sanitized guns. Now complete with two super high-quality replacement magazines that have been correctly matched with “045-89” and “045-90”. PROVENANCE: The Esteemed Collection Of Noted Expert And Author Warren Buxton. CONDITION: Approximately 90-95% bright orig blue except as concerns the factory sanitized areas that have oxidized to a level consistent with WWII workmanship. Most of the fire blue from the safety has faded. Excellent grips with the right panel somewhat darker, with only a few light handling marks and no splits. Excellent replacement magazines whose artificial aging is consistent with age of pistol. Mirror bright bore. Excellent manual mechanics though trigger return spring is weak requiring a nudge for trigger to return to full forward position. A very unusual AP that will invariably be a source of future conjecture. 51568-17 LMA (15,000-25,000) C&R – Lot 1568

*◊ RARE AND IMPORTANT EARLY WALTHER P.38 PROTOTYPE PISTOL.

SN 2A. Cal. 9mm. Early Walther P.38 prototype with heavy slide, internal extractor, rectangular firing pin, anvil hammer, and broad trigger. Assembled following the AP series and prior to standard P.38 production. This proofed but originally unnumbered example has a 5″ bbl, with drift adjustable front sight, whose lug extension has been internally lightened. The left side of the slide is marked with Walther banner and “P 38”. Internal extractor and narrow rear sight. Eagle/359 proof is on the slide and coverplate on the housing for the squared firing pin. The proofing is then repeated on the left side of the anvil hammer, the left side checkered disassembly lever and the left side of the frame that has been fitted with an unusual trigger whose left side presents a broader than usual profile to act as a trigger stop. For purpose of importation, the gun was marked “2A” on the left side of the frame. Early black plastic checkered grips, each panel molded with four encircled codes. “P.38” marked unnumbered magazine with two Eagle/359s on spine. This gun is featured on p. 1050 of Dr. Geoffrey Sturgess’ “The Borchardt & Luger Automatic Pistols”, and is an important early prototype in the development of the P.38. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. Geoffrey Sturgess; Ex-Visser Collection; The Esteemed Collection Of Noted Expert And Author Warren Buxton. CONDITION: Excellent retaining 98% orig bright blue. Grips are excellent with only a few scuffs and dings in the gloss finish. Mag retains over 95% blue. Bright bore with sharp rifling. Perfect manual mechanics. 51568-7 LMA (25,000-35,000) C&R – Lot 1569
