LOT OF TWO RARE 19TH CENTURY 32 CALIBER CURIOSA PISTOLS.
SN 18384/161. Cal. 32 RF. 1) Shatuck “Unique” 4-bbl pistol made in Hatfield, Massachusetts. 1-3/8″ bbl cluster. 2) Cal. 32. James Reid New Model “MY FRIEND” sgl-action knuckle duster. This particular example is made in early 1880’s with enlarged finger hole marked on left side of frame “REID’S NEW MODEL 32 / MY FRIEND”. Standard configuration 5-shot with 2-1/16″ bbl. CONDITION: 1) Fine overall retaining much of it orig nickel finish with old cleaning and pitting. Mechanically fine with bright smooth bore. 2) Very good to fine overall. Crisp engraved patterns. LOT OF TWO ANTIQUE HIGH CONDITION .22 DERINGERS.
1) FRANK WESSON VEST POCKET. NSN. Cal. 22. 2″ bbls. Brass frame. 2nd type with horizontal 1-line marking and squared muzzles. Rnd ring type hammer, sometimes referred to as the “Watch-Fob” model. Rosewood grips. Bbls swivel on center pin. CONDITION: Fine, with a pleasing patina to brass. Bbls and hammer retain a fine amount of orig high luster blue. Markings are clear. Grips are fine with minor handling marks. Fine mechanical function. Bores have some pitting. 2) STAR VEST POCKET. SN 3. Cal. 22. 2″ bbl. Nickel finish. Top of bbl marked “STAR VEST POCKET”. All external numbers match. Rosewood grips. Inscribed on back strap “DMG” in script. CONDITION: Very fine with light handling marks. Most of the orig blue on hammer and trigger, most of the orig nickel plating on frame and bbl. Some very minor surface rust on front strap and butt. Markings are clear. VERY FINE PEABODY MILITARY RIFLE.
NSN. Cal. 43. Standard configuration rifle with 33″ rnd bbl, square base front sight/bayonet lug and military style ladder rear sight, British proofs on the receiver and bbl with small inspector marks on the various parts, inspector cartouche “WC” on left opposite lock. This is a very fine example which appears complete and orig with crisp 5-line Providence Tool Company markings on left side of frame. CONDITION: Very fine overall, retaining about 75% finish overall, though bbl blue is thinning. Stocks are sound and well fit with some staining and storage blemishes. SN 516942. Cal. 45-70. Standard configuration with 32-5/8″ rnd bbl with long range Buffington rear sight. Inspector’s cartouche opposite lock has clear “1891” date. This is the last version utilizing combination ramrod and bayonet. CONDITION: Very good to fine overall. Gun overall is plum/brown with strong traces of bright blue and muted case colors. SHILOH SHARPS SINGLE SHOT RIFLE.
SN B6888. Cal. 45-70. Fine sporting rifle with 28″ heavy oct bbl, 1/2″ across the flats at the muzzle with Beech’s style combination front sight, Sharps elevator 800 yard ladder rear sight, and elevator tang sight. Case colored frame, dbl set triggers with XXX quality flame grained American walnut buttstock, a pewter forend tip and a cheekpiece on the stock, with case colored steel buttplate. Buttstock and forearm are checkered. Left side of frame stamped “SHILOH RIFLE MFG.CO. / BIG TIMBER MONTANA”. Visible SNs match. Weight: 10lbs 7oz. PROVENANCE: The Forrest G. Rhodes collection. CONDITION: Extremely fine, near new. Likely test fired only and retains nearly all orig finish to both wood and metal. Wood has minor handling marks. RARE AND DESIRABLE REMINGTON-KEENE MAGAZINE CARBINE AND LINE THROWING PROJECTOR.
NSN. Cal. 45-70. 20″ carbine variation with blue finish covering all parts with exception of bolt assembly and buttplate. Traditional name and patent dates on bolt with sub-inspector C.E.C. on right side of bbl at breech. Unusual integral line throwing adapter extends from the last 7-1/4″ of bbl and is ported with nine gas ports at the 12 o’clock position of said bbl. A strengthening rib has been added between the magazine tube and bbl extending all the way to front bbl band. No SN or additional markings could be located other than cal. designation of 45-70 at back left of receiver. This variation of a line throwing projector has never been observed by this cataloger before. Stocks are of 1-pc walnut and are the same as a traditional Remington Keene with the exception of an additional strengthening screw immediately below the chamber. CONDITION: Very fine overall, with most blue finish remaining from time of alteration. Stocks are solid with slight wear at wrist and bottom of forearm. No cracks, however, numerous small bruises exist probably from storage. Mechanics are fine. Bore is bright with sharp rifling. NSN. Cal. 70. 57-1/4″ overall, 42-1/4″ marked at breech “M1763”. Lock is marked “MAUBUERGE”. CONDITION: Good overall. Iron is overall grey with pitting especially at breech. Gun appears orig externally with exception of replaced front band and top jaw screw. Stock is refinished with hand worn patina with several reductions and hairlines, shattered at end. Cal. .60. 7″ oct to rnd bbl, signed “P. Berry”. Curly maple stock is relief carved at bbl tang. Brass furniture is not engraved. Pistol has a 4-3/4″ hand forged early unmarked German flint lock. Oval silver inlay on wrist. Peter Berry is a recognized gunsmith who worked in Dauphin county, PA. and died in 1796. CONDITION: Very good throughout. US MODEL 1805 HARPERS FERRY PISTOL, SN 580 WITH CHAMBERS CONVERSION.
SN 580. Cal. 54. This particular gun is pictured in Harpers Ferry Arsenal and Joseph Perkin The Classic Arms of the Early Years, Hudak, 2012 on pgs 53-55. Hudak describes “580 (1807) Period patented multi-shot conversion. Chambers Patent brass tube on right side of barrel. Only known M1805 with Chambers conversion. Allowed for multiple shots without reloading. Original flint”. Hudak shows close up pictures of the brass hinged door device he describes as “Chambers Patent brass tube”. CONDITION: Good overall. Bbl and lock markings discernible, thought SN on bbl and eagle on lock are light and difficult to read due to pitting or cleaning. Iron overall cleaned with mottled dark grey patina. There is an engraved identification marking on right side of rib “L893H6”, possibly re-conversion with replaced cock, frizzen and frizzen spring. Brass cleaned with light mustard patina and scattered dents and other cosmetic defects, sideplate is replaced. RARE AND FINE EARLY CIVIL WAR NAVY INSPECTED SAVAGE NAVY REVOLVER.
SN 1885. Cal. 44. Standard configuration of the popular Savage “Figure 8″ revolver, 14-3/4″ overall, 7-1/8” oct bbl, unique double action mechanism with 3-line address on top frame strap. This example retains much of its orig finish small anchor stamped on bbl flat and “P / J.R.G.” (Capt. John R. Goldsborough, USN). Navy inspected Savages are quite scarce especially in fine “as found” condition. CONDITION: Very good to fine overall. Gun retains 10-20% orig blue and case colors with balance matching plum/gray.
