GEORGE BROWN CLOCKWORK LARNARD FIRE TOY.
A totally odd form for a clockwork toy from the mid-19th century. A very early style of a fire pumper with its three original dimensional lead firemen. One with a fire horn and the others operating the equipment. Not only is the form highly unusual, but some of the coloring employed is rarely found on any other American tin toys. The flesh tone/peach coloring to the basic framework is rather odd and the stenciling used to decorate it is not found on any other American tin toy. To be quite frank, every aspect of this toy is most unique. The clockwork mechanism propels the toy along the floor and through a wire soldered to the rear axle, a bell is struck. A front fork extends the front wheels forward of the entire unit can steer it left or right. Simply put, this toy is an enigma, not only in style but also design, color and any other aspect imaginable. A rare opportunity to own a toy of this nature that for the most part is in virtually very fine all original condition. SIZE: 11″ l x 7-1/2″ h. CONDITION: As described above, upon close examination, the only issue that could be found with this toy is there appears to be the slightest amount of paint enhancement to the left rear wheel covering. Perhaps the solder had broken loose and in need of a minor repair. 1-14198 (6,000-12,000) – Lot 3245

FALLOWS/GEORGE BROWN CIRCUS CAGE DRAWN BY PLATFORM ELEPHANTS.
An unusually large early American tin toy possibly by either Fallows or George Brown. The thought of combining a fabulous platform toy with a trainer along with mom and baby pachyderms to draw this over sized cage wagon boggles the imagination. Ingenuity transformed from reality to toy form! The cage wagon is truly oversized compared to any other circus cage wagon that is known to exist. It is almost absurd to think of placing a lion and a leopard in a cage together. The coloring on the cage is very unusual and a strange combination of colors yet visually attractive. Quite an impressive toy with an abundance of charm as well as presence. SIZE: 20-1/2″ l x 6-1/2″ w x 8-3/4″ h. CONDITION: Overall very good plus original condition. The cage itself appears to be in untouched condition, the platform toy has some paint/solder work at large elephants feet and yoke wires. 1-14199 (5,500-6,500) – Lot 3248

EXHIBIT SUPPLY GRANDFATHERS CLOCK STRENGTH TESTER.
At virtually every arcade and other locations one would find strength testing machines, most often to compare your strength against other individuals. Strength machines were manufactured by numerous companies that also produced other coin-operated machines. This particular model most likely originally manufactured in the 1920s was large, impressive, and rang a bell when certain levels of strength were reached. When one engaged in play with this particular device, the bell would ring, putting a smile on the face of the user as well as onlookers, encouraging them to participate as well. Obviously one would put only one coin in and walk away. They would even compete against themselves trying to beat their own previous level. When one deposited a coin and squeezing the handle, the pendulum would swing and the indicator hand would travel clockwise around the dial. One would then listen to how many times the bell rang. The stronger the grip, the more times the bell would ring. Clock dial appears to be original and internal background paper was more than likely changed/updated on a regular basis. Directions appear to be of older vintage. SIZE: 22″ w x 22″ d x 75″ h. CONDITION: Currently machine is on free-play, most likely a minor adjustment is needed. Lacking simple wooden back door. Side access door is a replacement. It appears that at some point in time someone was attempting to refinish the wood surface and it looks like the wood was stripped down and is ready for a new finish. Overall a neat and impressive machine in need of a little cosmetic attention. 1-13753 (4,500-6,500) – Lot 3558

MILLS “CAILLOSCOPE” DROP CARD VIEWING MACHINE.
During the teens through the 1930s, Mills manufactured a number of drop card machines, which today are still in use in many arcades including Knott’s Berry Farm, Hershey Park, and Disneyland to name a few. This particular machine is a somewhat fancier version with an elaborate iron casting, which when opened would allow the operator to retrieve the day’s receipts. Similar to a music box, it has a large clockwork style mechanism contained within the cabinet. When a penny is deposited, one could view approximately 10-15 stereoview cards. Cards could easily be changed as well as the marquee to reflect the current show so as always to maintain repeat customers waiting to see the newest show. Of course one coin never got you the whole story and many coins were needed to see the complete show. This particular machine has an old west theme featuring a couple cowboys. A most visually attractive machine including carved wooden legs (not original to machine) and cast iron owl handles. SIZE: 74″ h to top of marquee x 20″ w x 17″ d. CONDITION: Overall in as found, operational “park” condition. Lacking keys for locks on front section of machine. 1-13749 (2,000-2,500) – Lot 3559
