INCREDIBLY RARE AND VERY COOL HIGH CONDITION SINGLE SHOT ROOK OR POACHER’S PISTOL BY DANIEL FRASER WITH SCOPE, ATTACHABLE SKELETON STOCK, AND CARRYING CASE.
SN 2494. (ca 1898) Cal. 250 Rook ? Jonathan Kirton in DANIEL FRASER GUN AND RIFLE MAKER OF EDINBURGH SCOTLAND describes and pictures one of these pistols which is missing its scope and stock, and is not engraved. He states “probably these were made in-house as no similar pistol has so far been found known to have come from another source.” He mentions another example SN 2436 which still has its detachable metal shoulder stock. Another example is known in Australia in its oak and leather case, complete with scope and stock, but it is also not engraved and only in good condition. Finding this near pristine engraved example, complete with its orig scope, Lyman sight, shoulder stock, and leather carrying case, is unprecedented. It has 9-1/8″ 1/3 octagon bbl, long front sight ramp holding small silver bead, and scope mount dovetailed through. Matching mount is on top flat of octagon portion of bbl which is also fitted with express rear sight which has inset ivory triangle and one folding leaf. Top of bbl is engraved “Danl Fraser & Co” “Gun & Rifle Manufacturers” “4 Leith St Terrace Edinburgh”. There is scroll engraving at breech end on side flats. Unique Fraser made nickel-plated tip-down single shot hammerless action, has opening and cocking lever on left side, and a tab safety at top of grip. Action is engraved with sprays of very well cut shaded scroll within Celtic knotwork borders. “DANl FRASER & Co” is on scrolled riband on left side over “EDINBURGH”. The left side is also stamped “Cal.” “.250”. Finger blade of trigger is checkered and SN 2494 is on trigger guard bow. There are also sprays of scroll on trigger guard and grip straps. Top strap is fitted with Lyman tang sight in specially shaped base. Back strap is slotted and threaded for attachable nickel-plated skeleton steel buttstock with finely sculpted elliptical reinforcing braces through frame. Figured walnut grips are nicely checkered. Pistol is accompanied by its Fraser made approx 4 X scope with leather covered recoil eye piece. Tube is engraved with Fraser information and address along with “Sole Patentees & Manufacturers”. Rear scope ring is engraved with SN 2494. This intriguing little pistol comes with its leather leg o’ mutton type carrying case with bail handle, which contains a cleaning rod and has large pocket on front for accessories. CONDITION: Excellent, close to new, original, as found. Bbl retains over 95% orig blue with a few light marks, mostly at left rear. Action retains virtually all of its orig nickel plate with hardly any noted losses or flaking. Plating on straps show some toning. Lyman sight retains over 80% of its blue, flaked and rubbed a bit on base. Stocks retain nearly all of their orig finish. Bore is excellent, appears essentially unfired. Lever spring is a bit weak. Attachable buttstock retains over 95% of its orig nickel plate with some flaking near attaching screw. Scope is excellent with only a few very light marks in its orig blue, optically clear. Case leather has darkened, and has some rubs, but is intact. Accessory pouch has some flaking of top grain; interior has rubs from removal and insertion of pistol and accessories. Special Note: This item(s) contains plant or animal properties that may be covered by the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Please read the Conditions of Sale, section 15, for more information regarding the Endangered Species Act, and your responsibilities as a buyer. 53198-5 MGM (7,000-12,000) ESA – Lot 1154

SN 24330. (1934) Cal. .400. 3″ Straight. (.405 groove diameter) One of the earliest proprietary Purdey cartridges developed, the “400 Straight” was advertised as an “excellent firearm for deer, wild boar, etc, and has gained great popularity for tiger shooting in India.” The first was made in 1906, and of the estimated fewer than 450 Purdey hammerless double rifles ever made, it was by far the most popular, with 120 examples recorded. Through intervening years many of these have been re-bored and chambered to .45-70. Action is engraved in classic Purdey house style with well cut varying sized but small scroll surrounding rose bouquets. “J. Purdey & Sons” is on each lockplate, as well as on bottom of action over “London”. Blued trigger guard with open scroll engraving has SN on tang which extends to steel grip cap. SN 12967. (CA 1890) Cal. 10 ga. 3-1/4″ Chambers. Ten bore double rifles made for the 8 dram load, such as this rifle, are much sought after, as they provide nearly all of the “knock down” power of an 8 bore, with considerably less weight. (After all you carry them more than you shoot them.) This solid example has 24″ Enfield rifled, dovetailed bbls with full length partially file cut rib with dolls head extension. A single standing leaf express rear, and silver bead front, sights (front with folding moon bead) are dovetailed. Tops of bbls are engraved “Holland & Holland 98 New Bond Street, London.” and “Winners of all the “Field” Rifle Trials London” on tops. Bbl flats are stamped with London black powder proofs for 220 grains of powder. Splinter is robust and has integral loop. A wide sling loop is soldered to bottom rib. Round bodied Jones underlever snap action with secondary rear bolt, is fitted with peninsula rebounding back locks with flat bodied serpentine hammers having dolphin heads. Top strap extends over comb. Action is engraved with near full coverage exceptionally well cut varying sized shaded scroll. “Holland & Holland” is on each lockplate, and left side of action is engraved “Charge 8 Drams 3-1/4 Inch Case”. Steel trigger guard has SN in relief on tang which extends to steel grip cap. Nicely marbled and lightly figured European walnut buttstock with point pattern checkering and right hand shadow line cheekpiece measures 14-5/8″ over ancient, most likely orig, Silver pad. A vacant silver oval, sling loop, and Kenya registration numbers “2” “930” (?) are on toe line. Matching splinter forend has forward pivoting lever release. Drop at heel: approx 2-7/8″, drop at comb: approx 1-7/8″. Cast: approx 1/2 off. Weight: 15 lbs. 14 oz. LOP: 14-5/8″. CONDITION: Good, unrestored. Bbls retain some of what appears to be orig blue, perhaps as much as 30%, with numerous marks and scuffs, but nothing deep. Engraving of rib and lettering, remains excellent. Action and locks retain traces of orig color where protected, with only a few small spots of very light pitting. Stocks retain most of an old oil refinish with numerous marks and scratches, with old sanding marks. Pad is petrified with losses at heel and toe. Checkering has considerable wear. Checkering on forend is nearly flat. Bores are very fine to excellent, shiny with strong sharp rifling throughout, with some scattered shallow pitting mostly in right bbl. (Exceptional for an early black powder rifle.) Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Locks are excellent. Lever return spring a bit weak. This robust rifle is undoubtedly a great shooter. 53152-1 MGM (8,000-14,000) – Lot 1177
