Smooth concave rib with maker’s name and address, left bbl is marked “W.L.Moore”, small steel front bead sight. Hand detachable side locks with cocking indicators, full coverage extremely fine English style rose and scroll engraving. “Safe” inlaid in gold on the top tang. Wood is very nicely figured walnut with checkered splinter forearm and straight stock with teardrop behind locks and checkered in 2-point pattern at wrists with gold oval at toe, 14-1/4″ LOP over a checkered butt. Orig stock checkered in 2-point pattern with five spacers and leather face pad, brass oval in pistol grip with initials “S.W.”, this stock without additional spacers is short. All visible SN’s match. SN 222. Cal. 12 ga. 30″ 1/3 octagon, 2/3s rnd Damascus bbl. Full length Damascus top rib with steel front bead. Double triggers, external hammers, stepped side plates. Straight grip buttstock checkered in 2-point pattern with 14″ LOP over full steel buttplate. Bbl and toe of stock mounted for sling swivels. Trigger guard fancifully fashioned with floral leaf engraving as are side plates, hammers and top of frame. Bbls with what appears to be its orig ramrod. Visible SNs on bottom of bbls. Stock with wedge fastener at forearm. CONDITION: Very good as partially restored. Bbls retain 90-95% properly restored Damascus pattern. Receiver and hammers have toned mostly grey. Nipples appear to be well done replacements. Buttstock has been restored long ago and is slightly undersized to steel buttplate and retains most of its restored finish with only minor handling marks. JAMES PURDEY PERCUSSION DOUBLE TWO GROOVE EXPRESS RIFLE WITH CASE.

SN 5410. (1858) Cal. 40. 30″ Damascus bbls are fitted with nesting express sights, and with makers name and address on rib. Ramrod appears orig. Special Purdey rifle hammers have front sliding safeties and are scroll engraved. Dense European walnut stock is iron mounted with spurred trigger guard, deeply checkered buttplate, and spring-loaded patch box on right side (Interior of patchbox cover is engraved “2-1/2 Drms R: powder”. Stock also features standard checkering and nicely shaped right hand cheekpiece. Old quartered oak case with brass carrying handle is newly lined in blue green cloth and has Gregory label in lid, and contains a number of accessories, mostly new, including turnscrews, nipple key, bullet starter, and sling. CONDITION: Good. Bbls with a good re-brown, other metal parts gray brown patina. Stock with an old oil refinish. This rifle is listed in Unsworth’s book in which he states this “rifle came to auction in 1967” and was described as having a bulge in left bbl and with left hammer and safety missing. SN 17706. (ca 1906) Cal. 12 ga. 2-3/4″ Chambers. 31″ Chopper lump bbls are engraved “J. Purdey & Sons” and “Audley House. South Audley Street. London. England.” and with Whitworth steel info on slightly raised game rib. Bbl flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 2-3/4″ chambers. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with SNs, “CHOKE”, and bbl makers initials “SS” (Sam Simons). Tube numbers “27913” and “27914” are on loop. Case hardened, Beesley patent self-opening sidelock action features non-automatic safety (SAFE engraved), bushed strikers, hidden third fastener, side clips, engraved arrow tumbler end cocking indicators, and dbl triggers. Action and lockplates are engraved in Purdey house style rose and scroll. “J. Purdey & Sons” is on each lockplate. Bottom of action is engraved “PURDEY’S PATENT”. Scroll engraved trigger guard has SN on tang. Smoky marbled and lightly figured European walnut straight grip stock measures 14-1/2″ over checkered wood butt, and features standard drop points,and grip checkering. Matching splinter ejector forend with Anson release has actioner’s initials “J.T” (Joe Thompson) on iron. Bore diameter: left -.735, right – .734. Bore restrictions: left – .036 (full), right – .008 (IC). Wall thickness: left – .026, right – .032 . Drop at heel: 2-1/4″, drop at comb: 1-1/2″. Cast is approx 1/2″ off. Weight: 7 lbs. 11 oz. LOP: 14-1/2″. Brown leather case with plated steel corners is gold embossed “H. J. Duff” on top. Interior is lined in green felt and has gold printed black leather Purdey label in lid. Case contains a plated square oil bottle marked “Made in Italy”. CONDITION: Good, as refurbished. Bbls retain most of an old re-black, engraving on rib a bit thin. Action and lockplates retain over 80% of a re-case hardening over considerable pitting on left side, engraving quite soft. Newly made good quality stocks retain nearly all of their orig finish with only a few minor handling marks. Wood of forend has bent slightly down away from bbls. Audley House, South Audley Street, London” and “Made of Sir Joseph Whitworth’s Fluid – Pressed Steel” on tops. Bbl flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 1-1/4 oz of shot and standard chambers. Bottoms of bbls are stamped “Choke” and with SNs. Barrel makers initials “CA” (C. Aston, long time Purdey head barrel maker) are on bottom of left bbl. Tube numbers 35023 and 35024 are on loop. Case hardened, self-opening, sidelock action features non-automatic safety (SAFE inlaid in gold), bushed strikers, hidden third fastener, side clips, arrow engraved tumbler end cocking indicators, and early style ejectors. Action is engraved with typical house style small scroll with rose bouquets with “J. Purdey & Sons” on both lockplates and on bottom of action. Scroll engraved trigger guard has SN at grip. Nicely marbled European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 15-1/4″ over leather-faced solid brown pad. There is a large silver oval on toe line. Matching splinter ejector forend has Anson release and actioners initials “J. T” (Joe Thompson) on iron. Bore diameter: left -.734, right -.734. Bore restrictions: left -.039 (full), right -.011 (lt mod). Wall thickness: left -.023, right -.025. Drop at heel: 2-3/8″, drop at comb: 1-3/8″. Cast: approx 1/8″ off. Weight: 7 lbs. 4 oz. LOP: 15-1/4″. CONDITION: Very good, as refurbished. Bbls retain nearly all of a London quality satin re-black. Engraving on tops has been picked up. Action retains 90% re-color hardening, silvered on fences, beads, and thumbpiece, engraving considerably washed. Old replacement buttstock has been refinished, and has repaired crack running from rear of top tang to rear of left lockplate. Buttstock and forend retain nearly all of an old hand rubbed oil finish, checkering deeply re-cut. Bores are bright and shiny with some slight frosting in right bbl, and one or 2 minor pings in left. SN 43129. Cal. 12 ga. 27-1/2″ Whitworth fluid steel bbls with 2-5/8″ chambers, choked IMP.CYL/MOD. Full length plain steel top rib with copper front bead and gold inlaid near breech with two pigeons and “F.C. FOWLER. MOODUS CONN”. Breech end of bbls are nicely scroll engraved with rabbits on sides. Dbl triggers, automatic ejectors, no safety, Greener cross bolt action. Spectacular replacement buttstock by Walter Koloch with round knob pistol grip, fancy checkering through wrist, floral carving at back of action and lined butt. 14-1/2″ LOP. Replacement splinter forearm is fancifully checkered with Deeley release and horn tip. Receiver is fabulously full coverage game scene and scroll engraved, fences are fantastically shell carved, top lever is fully engraved with gold initials, gold crown, gold staph and gold thumb push on left side of lever. Trigger guard near fully engraved with game scene and scroll and gold SN at tang. Weight: 6lb. 9oz. CONDITION: Very good. Partially restored. Bbls retain nearly all of a professional quality restored finish, engraving lightly thinned, minor dent in right tube towards muzzle. Custom buttstock and forearm are superb and retain most of their custom finish. Receiver is excellent and retains traces of original case color. Pins and screws with restored high polish blued finish. Trigger guard and top lever retain virtually all of their restored blue finish. Mechanics are excellent. Bores are bright and shiny. SN 49761. (1901) Cal. 28 ga, 2-1/2″ Chambers. 26″ Bbls with narrow matted rib are engraved with Greener’s name and various addresses, and steel type, on tops. Very small case hardened facile princeps action with side safety is engraved with 50% coverage small scroll surrounding game scenes on sides; grouse on left, wood pigeons on right. Fences are relief carved with non-detailed fig leaves. Nicely fiddle figured round knob pistol grip buttstock measures 13-3/4″ over checkered horn buttplate. Buttstock and matching long splinter forend with Deeley release, are nicely checkered. Bore diameter: left -.565, right – .566. Bore restrictions: left – .027 (full), right – .005 (IC). Wall thickness: left – .021, right – .021. Drop at heel: 2-7/8″, drop at comb: 1-5/8″. Cast about 1/4″ off. Weight: 4 lbs. 5 oz. LOP: 13-3/4″. CONDITION: Fine, original, as found, retaining a large amount of all orig finishes on wood and metal. Unfortunately it appears to have been stored in contact with some oxidant, such as blood, with loss of finish and some deep pitting resulting, most notably some very deep pits on tops of bbls toward breech ends, and considerable deep rust and staining on front portion of action, and especially on forend latch.
