JAMES PURDEY PERCUSSION DOUBLE TWO GROOVE EXPRESS RIFLE WITH CASE.

SN 5410. (1858) Cal. 40. 30″ Damascus bbls are fitted with nesting express sights, and with makers name and address on rib. Ramrod appears orig. Special Purdey rifle hammers have front sliding safeties and are scroll engraved. Dense European walnut stock is iron mounted with spurred trigger guard, deeply checkered buttplate, and spring-loaded patch box on right side (Interior of patchbox cover is engraved “2-1/2 Drms R: powder”. Stock also features standard checkering and nicely shaped right hand cheekpiece. Old quartered oak case with brass carrying handle is newly lined in blue green cloth and has Gregory label in lid, and contains a number of accessories, mostly new, including turnscrews, nipple key, bullet starter, and sling. CONDITION: Good. Bbls with a good re-brown, other metal parts gray brown patina. Stock with an old oil refinish. This rifle is listed in Unsworth’s book in which he states this “rifle came to auction in 1967” and was described as having a bulge in left bbl and with left hammer and safety missing. Present left hammer and safety are good replacements and no evidence can be seen on interior of bbl of any bulge. Bores are very fine. Case is good. 51814-2 MGM (4,000-6,000) – Lot 2702
