ANDREW O’CONNOR JR. (American, 1874-1941) VICTORY. A rare and important bronze by this American sculptor. Bronze figure holds shield in right arm behind body and large feather in other arm. A SCRAPBOOK AND DIARY COLLECTION PERTAINING TO THE LAURA GILPIN FAMILY AMASSED BY MADELAINE GILPIN. Seven large photographic and scrap albums and eighteen diaries covering the years from the 1920’s to the 1940’s. A fascinating history of the family’s travels, homes, and acquaintances as seen by Madelaine Gilpin, with help provided by her very close friend Sophie B. Norris. The Maine Gilpin family home was located on Mt. Desert Island. Another home was located in the Western United States. The albums contain a number of signed and unsigned Laura Gilpin photographs. They also contain letters and photographs of other artists including Anna Coleman Ladd. Album 1: 1920’s clippings and early photographs, including signed “Gabrielle Enthoven”, “AB Canfield”; letters from A.C Ladd, Archibald McLeish and more. Album 2: Scrap album with letter signed “Angna Enters, brochure of the Bar Harbor fire, some photographs, Christmas and greeting cards, possibly some unsigned Laura Gilpin photographs (one of snow covered mountains, the other of a barn at dusk). Album 3: Photographs, including signed by Arthur Rush, Neilson Edwards, Stowkowski, and others. Two signed Laura Gilpin photographs of Madelaine Gilpin. Newspaper clippings, autographed inscribed photograph of Helen Hayes at piano, signed poem (Conselo?), signed photographs of Hildreth Meiere. Album 4: Seven Georgia O’Keefe photographs, signed Laura Gilpin photos, five signed Laura Gilpin photos of a stage play, other photographs including two of barns, probably by Laura Gilpin. Album 5: Photographic album of family trip out west including photos in Utah, postcard photos of Oregon, Alfred Greenough’s house in Mt. Desert, Maine, and other houses, boats and people of Mt. Desert. Album 6: Photographs of the American Southwest in the 1940’s, Mt. Desert and other parts of Maine, and some Native American Indians. Album 7: America’s Cup yacht photos, sailboats, Maine coast including Mt. Desert, Archibald McLeish, large photographs of the West and one of New York City. Loose items include Angna Enters signed and dry point print, ten photographs by Laura Gilpin of a palatial home out West (possibly Kragmore, Colorado Springs), a box containing eighteen small diaries form the 1930’s and 1940’s which correspond to the timelines of the scrapbooks. HANGING FRENCH-STYLE CURIO CABINET. Top area with mirror back and supporting a shaped shelf. Supports are brass figures of women on pedestals and below are four doors, two of which have glass fronts. Edges and panels are trimmed in decorative brass mounts and the wood veneer used is rosewood banding and matched lighter veneers. A very attractive and useful piece.
