A large three-mast schooner is moored next to buildings and is purported to be a rendering of the schooner Charles F. Hayer. Several people are on a large dock area with barrels and wagon. A nighttime scene with bright full moon reflects on the water and clouds and lights can be seen in the windows and on the ship. Housed in a fine replacement gilt molded wood frame. Signed lower left. WAYNE BEAM MORRELL (American, 1923-) SCENIC PAINTED LAMP SHADE. Oval lamp shade in brass has two sides which are painted with a winter scene and the other with a summer scene. Both are signed “Wayne Morrell”. Winter scene shows a hilly landscape with river and snow covered ground. Two figures are walking with a dog. The summer landscape shows a pond with fisherman and boat, large lawn area with trees and houses. The lamp shade sits atop a floor lamp with two oval wood tiers, the top holding two light bulb fixtures. All supported by three snake feet. The shade fits on a brass top shaft which adjusts up and down. An interesting and unusual piece for a favorite Cape Ann artist. SIZE: Shade is 5” h x 13” w x 9-1/4”. CHILDE HASSAM (American, 1859-1935) MOTHER AND CHILD IN GARDEN. Outstanding and important oil on board scene shows a woman (Annie Magill Doan) standing in a garden dressed in a white blouse and long blue skirt. She holds an infant (Calvin B. Doan) dressed in a blue sailor’s smock and striped blue and white undergarment. She stands on a brick walkway and beside her on the walkway is a large ceramic flowerpot and metal watering can. A wooden box is seen behind her which resembles a mulching bin. A small brick building is seen on the left side with a large wheel attached which may provide water for the large garden area. The right side has a profusion of brightly colored flowers while at the tree lines in the distant landscape are outlines of several buildings all under a blue sky. Signed lower left “Childe Hassam” Housed in a carved re-gilt period arts and crafts style frame. The back of the board in period writing “DOAN BOSTON MASS.” PROVENANCE: Descended through the Doan family to present consignor. SIZE: 12” x 16-1/8”. CONDITION: Very good. WILLIAM L. SONNTAG (American, 1822-1900) PANORAMIC VALLEY VIEW (POSSIBLY NEW HAMPSHIRE?). Spectacular oil on canvas. Recently discovered. A panoramic scene shows a wide, expansive valley with mountain background all under light blue and cloud sky. The flat valley has several small villages each with a church with steeple rising above the tree line. The towns are surrounded by tree lined meadows, and farms dot the landscape. In the foreground a farmer with harrow is behind two oxen in a cleared field having a wood surrounding fence. A dirt road is seen with a four wheel wagon and oxen. The host and hostess are out on the porch and the man waves the hat at the oncoming coach. A well pump and trough are seen in front to water the horses. UNSIGNED (Austrian, 19th Century) THE HUNTER. Fine small bronze depicts a hunter waving hat with a selection of different kills, including deer, duck, and wild fowl at his feet. He has a double barrel shotgun over his back and is mounted to a marble plinth. The bronze is in two colors: gold and a reddish brown. SIZE: 10” h , 11-1/2” overall. JOSEF MUHR (Austrian, 1873-1912) “EDWARD VII”. Bronze bust of a man with mustache and beard wearing a military uniform laden with military medals. It sits atop a black marble base with name in gilt and fits onto a removable ebonized stepped wood base. The bronze is signed “J Muhr 1908” and stamped“kunsterzgiesserei th.th.srpek wien x. a.j.selzer ”. Edward VII was son of Queen Victoria, Prince of Wales, and reigned as King Of England from 1901-1910. SIZE: 11-1/2” h , total height 18-1/2”. ALBERT ERNEST CARRIER-BELLUSE (French, 1824-1887) “FISHERMAN AND HUNTRESS”. Both signed on base“L.C.Tiffany”. Both period bronzes are in dark brown patina, one shows a boy holding up dead ducks and other hand holding up spears with leaf vine. The other is a girl holding up a string of fish and having a net draped over her back and her other arm is holding rope and a boat hook with cattails. Both are signed “Carrier-Belluse”. WILLIAM JURIAN KAULA (American, 1871-1953) PAIR OF PAINTINGS OF THE SIENE RIVER, PARIS. Two unsigned paintings on academy board show the Siene River with tour boats, bridges, people and cars. The tree lined waterway is seen with several different boats and bridges. Both identically housed in partial gilt frames with linen and wood liners. Both boards have label of Frost & Adams, Boston. Accompanying the paintings is a letter from Frank D’Angelo, Inc. Antiques Rowley, Mass indicating that the two paintings were purchased from the person who bought them from the Kaula Estate. CHARLES WARREN EATON (American, 1857-1937) “THE ROAD TO BRUGES, BELGIUM”. Oil on canvas evening sunset scene shows a dirt road leading to tall trees and windmill. The road passing a thatched roof home shaded by three tall trees. All under a colorful sunset sky. Signed lower right “Chas Warren Eaton” and dated “1901” or “1907”. Original penned paper label on back of stretcher with title and artist name. Also a pencil number of canvas “1252”. PIETRO VALERIO (American, Mid 20th Century) LEOPOLD GODOWSKY AND HIS CHATTERING MONKEYS. Important large oil on canvas scene depicting Leopold Godowsky at his piano. Ghost like images of seven monkeys are seen standing on and near the piano, two of which are on two sheets of music. The background of the painting is a tropical marshland with hanging vines, trees, water, pond lilies and monkeys. Undoubtedly artist Valerio was depicting Godowsky in the midst of composing his famous work titled “Chattering Monkeys at the Sacred Lake of Wendit”. Signed lower right “Pietro Valerio”. Housed in what appears to be its original period wide gesso decorated gilt frame. PROVENANCE: From a fine southern Maine home before which it was owned by a significant New York advertising executive. REFERENCE NOTE: Leopold Godowsky (1870-1938) is considered one of the 20th Centuries greatest pianists and an accomplished composer. Godowsky was born in Lithuania in 1870. He is self taught and in 1884 he came to the United States. He became head of the Piano Department at the Chicago Conservatory in 1893. In 1909 he became Director of the Piano School on the Imperial Academy of Music in Vienna. An unprecedented accomplishment for a Jewish man to hold this prestigious post. He moved back to the United States at the onset of WWI and resided in New York City. He did in 1938. SIZE: 40” x 44”. CONDITION: Surface dirt, small chip in cheek, otherwise very good. GEORGE BENJAMIN LUKS (American, 1867-1933) “THE TENTH ROUND”. Oil on canvas half portrait of a boxer. The man is seen with arms across his bare chest, one boxing glove is showing. His head is held up in triumphant mode and a winning smile is on his face. A wonderful expression. A greenish black background. Signed lower right “George Luks 1902”. Housed in an ebonized wide carved wood frame with thin gold liner which has a title and artist plaque attached. NOTE: We have been told by the consignor that prior to lining the painting was signed and dated on reverse. It is possible that this is a self portrait. CLAUDE JOSEPH VERNET (French, 1714-1789) SHIP WRECKED. Oil on canvas scene shows a coastline with storm clouds and rough seas. A floundering ship is seen wrecking against rocks while people on shore are looking on and assisting. There is a ship aground and another ship heading toward shore. A dock area has two figures and several other people braving the storm. There is a hole in the gray skies which sheds light on the scene. Housed in a deep gesso decorated gold painted antique frame. THEODORE ROUSSEAU (French, 1812-1867) EVENING LANDSCAPE. Oil on thin mahogany panel scene shows water with hills beyond, trees and rocks under a sunset landscape. Signed bottom right “Th. R”. Housed in a fine 19th Century deep gilt gesso decorated frame. Back of the panel has a label with stamp, also another black stamp which is illegible. This corresponds to a stamp on the frame which is round and “Celni Grad Praha”. A letter is affixed to the back from the “Kleinova Gallerie of Praha, Grand Hotel Sroubek” dated July 22, 1931. The hand written letter as follows: “I, Oscar Klein, proprietor of Kleinova Gallerie Praha, Grand Hotel Sroubek-do hereby guarantee that the oil-painting, sold by him this day-is a genuine canvass oil-painting by Theodore Rousseau at the price of $75…Signed in the presence of witnesses”. With witness signature the Klein’s signature. Also what appears to be a 20 Kolek stamp dated “1919”. PROVENANCE: From a fine Bangor, Maine Estate. SIZE: 4-1/2” x 14”. KARL PIERRE DAUBIGNY (French, 1846-1886) LANDSCAPE WITH HOUSE. Oil on wood panel shows a house nestled amongst trees under white cloud and blue sky. Housed in a fancy period gesso decorated frame with brass artist tag. Painting is quite dirty and we do not see a signature. There is a letter on the back written to the consignor’s distant family member, dated “1931”. This is on “J. F. Millet” letterhead. Titled letterhead states: “Atelier de J. F. Millet, Barbizon, Foret de Fontainebleau”. The letter in pen script in French as follows: “Recu je monseau le Reverend Ashley A. Smith. D. D. la ? je Treize cents francs (1300) pour un tableau je Karl Daubigny-paysage Barbizon le 1 aout 1931” and signed “P. Dankin” with a signature. Also a French stamp which is signed and dated. A SCRAPBOOK AND DIARY COLLECTION PERTAINING TO THE LAURA GILPIN FAMILY AMASSED BY MADELAINE GILPIN. Seven large photographic and scrap albums and eighteen diaries covering the years from the 1920’s to the 1940’s. A fascinating history of the family’s travels, homes, and acquaintances as seen by Madelaine Gilpin, with help provided by her very close friend Sophie B. Norris. The Maine Gilpin family home was located on Mt. Desert Island. Another home was located in the Western United States. The albums contain a number of signed and unsigned Laura Gilpin photographs. They also contain letters and photographs of other artists including Anna Coleman Ladd. Album 1: 1920’s clippings and early photographs, including signed “Gabrielle Enthoven”, “AB Canfield”; letters from A.C Ladd, Archibald McLeish and more. The first watercolor shows a slave trader bargaining a sale with a woman in front of him and other men. The other watercolor shows two men smoking pipe with a variety of merchandise on street. The other signed bottom right “Romano” shows a man, woman and child in a hay wagon pulled by oxen. They are in a pool of water with classical ruins in the background, under a sunset sky.
