CASED MAYNARD FIRST MODEL RIFLE SHOTGUN SET. Cal .35. 26” part oct bbl and Cal .55, 20” part oct bbl. Marked “MAYNARD ARMS CO. / WASHINGTON.” on the right side of the frame and “MANUFACTURED BY / MASS. ARMS CO. / CHICOPEE FALLS.” on the left. “MAYNARD . PATENTEE. / MAY 27 1851 / JUNE 1856” on the cap box. A paper tag inside the patchbox lists six patents through December 6, 1859. Double set trigger and tang sight are mounted on the frame. The 28-3/4” x 12” case is lined with red velvet and contains the gun and two bbls, a large single cavity bullet mold, a powder flask, bullet seater, patch cutter, screwdriver, wad seater, wad cutter, 2 Maynard lubricator cans, 3 cleaning brushes, a slip on front sight that is too large for either bbl, a cap tin, 5 shotgun shells, 11 unfired .35 caliber shells, 1 loaded 35 cal. case missing the base. SN 1750. CONDITION: The short bbl retains most of its finish, the longer one about 50% getting very thin. Action is a smooth gray brown patina with considerable blue on the hammer. Buttplate and patchbox are gray. Wood has light dents and scratches. Bullet mold has light spots of surface rust and pitting. Flask is fine. The lubricator tins are slightly rusted. The screwdriver and wad cutter are replacements. The set trigger is not working properly, otherwise the action is good. The case has a number of scratches on top and wear to the corners. Interior has numerous rust stains and a few tears, but is generally sound. 4-49756 FS260 (3,500-4,500)
