EXTREMELY RARE ALTMAIER REPEATING RIFLE. Cal .32. 26-3/8” oct bbl. Peter A. Altmaier of Harrisburg, PA, invented several complicated repeating rifles after the Civil War. This brass frame rifle is marked “P.A.ALTMAIER / PAT. REPEATING.DUPLEX RIFLE. / HARRISBURG. PA.” on top of bbl in front of the receiver. A German silver wedge is inserted in a dovetail in front of this marking and carries the initial “A.J”. From the style of the mechanism, this gun is related to his three 1886 and 1887 patents, number 334731 of 26 January 1886, 343883 of 15 June 1886 and 370032 of 27 September 1887. Copies of these three patents accompany the lot. The brass operating lever accomplished several things; it releases the breech block and slides it to the rear, moves the safety and cocks the hammer. It evidently had other functions as there are plug holes and old slots which are no longer used. It is broken behind the pivot point and is not currently functional. The sides of the receiver and the iron reinforcing piece around the top are slightly engraved with wigglework patterns. NSN. CONDITION: Iron parts have a light coating of dried oil, rust and dirt. The brass parts have a dark patina. Wood has light dents and scratches with some light paint marks. Action is not working. 4-49107 FS7 (4,000-5,000)
