RARE EARLY WINCHESTER MODEL 1886 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 50-100-450. Standard grade rifle with 26” oct to round bbl, button magazine, half nickel front sight and three leaf carbine style express rear sight. It has uncheckered wood with straight stock and smooth steel shotgun buttplate. It has a case colored receiver, which is rather rare for the 50-100. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter identifying this rifle with the 50-100 caliber and indicating shipment on Oct. 20, 1894 with 13 other model 1886’s to work order 21262. According to Tom Adams, who was the co-author of a book on 1886 50-100-450 rifles, this was the 2nd 50-100 made. He states that the earlier 50-100’s were made using bbls marked “50 EX”, which this one has, because that was what Winchester had in stock at that time. Removing the forearm discloses that the bottom flat is marked with a “54” which indicates the rate of twist for this bbl which is the correct rate of twist for the 50-100. Few 50-100’s were made were made with case colored receivers. SN 92065. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl retains about 90% finish having strong dark blue on the oct area turning plum on the round area with a couple of nicks and a spot or two of fine pitting. The lever retains about 30% case colors bright in sheltered areas and the hammer about 90% dark colors. The buttplate retains about 80% original blue turning plum with some pitting at the heel. Wood is sound with a couple of gouges on the comb with numerous other smaller scrapes and bruises but overall retains about 90% original varnish on the stock and about 50% on the forearm.
