REVEREND HENRY WARD BEECHER ENGLISH TEACUP AND SAUCER IN ORIGINAL PRESENTATION CASE. Second quarter 19th century. The English porcelain plum-red, gilt-decorated and floral stippled teacup and saucer, the cup with square handle and footed. Mounted in original silk-lined hinged leatherbound mahogany presentation case, the silk liner impressed in gilt letters, “Tiffany & Co., New York / Ave. de l’Opera, Paris”, the lid inscribed in gilt lettering, “The Holy Grail”. SIZE: Case: 5″ h x 7-3/4″ w x 9-1/4″ d. Saucer: 5-1/2″ dia. Cup 1-1/4″ h. PROVENANCE: Presented to Reverend Beecher by his wife Eubula Beecher as his personal cup and saucer. After the death of the Reverend it was gifted by Eubula to family friends Charles Howard and his wife Mary in 1888, subsequently gifted to the family of the current owner. This lot is accompanied by various letters to Mrs. Mary Howard and Mr. Charles Howard from Mrs. Beecher, outlining the terms of the gift. CONDITION: Cup and saucer in very fine original condition. Presentation case in “as found” fragile condition, with considerable loss to leather cover. Latch and hinges intact as is the silk liner. Box in need of re-gluing. 9-90875 (400-600)
