EMILE ALBERT GRUPPE (American, 1896-1978) HENRY FORD SCHOONER. Outstanding oil on canvas portrait of the schooner Henry Ford. It is shown sailing from left to right slightly toward viewer. A crew member is atop one of the masts and the schooner is leaning over in brisk wind. Light blue and cloud sky and deep blue ocean. The Henry Ford was built by A. D. Story and its home port was Gloucester, Massachusetts. The boat plans were drawn in 1921 and donated to the Mystic Seaport Museum. It won the 1922 International Cup Elimination trial but lost to Bluenose in 1922. It went on to win the 1923 Fisherman’s Race on Gloucester’s 300th Anniversary. The racing fisherman, as this boat is known as, was designed primarily to meet the requirements of International racing and have been held up as the finest examples of the Gloucester fishing schooners that were ever built. Light shines from the right reflecting on the green doors of the church front. The full steeple is shown with clock and weathervane. Bright colors can be seen in the trees and bushes. All look toward a small black and white dog who looks up wondering whether he is invited. A shallow beach area is seen with a rock quay with a sailboat on the horizon. SIGNED (Last quarter of the 19th Century) GATHERING IN THE GARDEN. Outstanding oil on canvas outdoor scene shows a family gathered outside an old stone building which is covered with flower vines and surrounded by flowers and trees. A young maiden in fancy pink dress, hat and parasol is seated on some rocks and smells a red rose that she is holding in her hand. Her mother, in a black dress, looks on. Two children are seen gathering flowers with a white dog beside. Three older girls are seen in the background, one picking flowers. The painting is signed lower right indistinctly. Housed in its original gilt liner. The frame was not found in the house. This untouched painting exhibits outstanding detail, color and subject matter. Obviously done by an artist of great talent. CHARLES GREEN SHAW (American, 1892-1974) PLAYING CARD MONTAGE. A framed collage of four 18th Century French playing cards and four ivory gaming pieces. They are centered on a bronze round metal dated 1897. All pieces are backed to a red felt-like fabric. Housed in a ebonized and gilt wood frame having an original label on back “Montage by Shaw”, a number sticker at top of frame “386”. A pamphlet titled “Montages by Charles Shaw: An Exhibition at Washburn Gallery New York”, dated 1976 accompanies the lot. A similar example is pictured and this may have been in that exhibit. This etching is No. 172 in Zigrosser’s “The Complete Etchings of John Marin”. A hand written letter signed and dated “April 29/47” in regards to a woman in New Jersey who is interested in acquiring one of his paintings; Also there is a large gelatin silver print titled “John Marin, New Jersey by George Daniell” and signed by the photographer”. GEORGE LAFAYETTE CLOUGH (American, 1824-1901) “VIEW NEAR GLEN COVE, L.I. 1866”. Fine unsigned oval oil on canvas landscape scene shows a pond with cows and horses and a connected farmhouse beyond nestled between two small hills. There is a gentleman rowing two women holding parasols on the right portion of the pond and a rowboat has been pulled up on shore in the foreground. A wonderful blue sky with white clouds finish the landscape. Housed in its original carved walnut frame. The title is written on the back of canvas and dated. This painting was found as one of a pair of oval paintings identically framed, both titled on reverse of canvas, this one being unsigned and the other with full signature. SIZE: 22″ x 30″. ALBERT BIERSTADT (American, 1830-1902) PANORAMIC VIEW OF CASTLE AND VALLEY. Large oil on canvas scene shows a Continental scene with a large castle atop cliff. The castle overlooks a river valley with snow capped mountains in the distance. The foreground shows three women with gathering baskets walking along dirt paths and crossing a wood bridge over a small mountain stream. An Alpine house is seen on the left side. All under light blue and white cloud sky. Signed lower right with conjoined AB and dated “1868”. Attached to top left corner is an original label which appears to have a location “Schloss Tirol”. According to Matthew Baigell’s book on Albert Bierstadt is was in 1867 that Bierstadt traveled to England and then toured the continent and returns in 1869. SIZE: 24-3/4″ x 35″. WOUTER VERSCHUUR (Dutch, 1812-1874) A QUARRY HAUL. Outstanding oil on large mahogany panel scene shows three large work horses pulling a two-wheel wood cart laden with large quarry rocks. A man is leading the team while another walks beside the cart. The cart is being pulled across a shallow river with a double arch stone bridge behind. Several horses and people cross the bridge and a woman and boy look on with their dog. Mountains with castle and town are seen beyond the bridge. Signed lower right “W. Verschuur”. Mahogany panel has a lattice work backing in oak. Housed in a good gesso decorated gilt replacement frame. SIZE: 27″ x 39-1/2″. The animals include seven large deer, rabbit, porcupine, three ducks, an egret, white ibis and woodpecker. This scene is all encompassed in a mountain and tree landscape under white and blue sky. UNSIGNED (European)OLD MASTER TRYPTIC. Large oil on gessoed wood panel tryptic has its original gilt decorated with gilt writing frame. Written on the frame is the following Latin phrase “ANGE LVS DOMINIA PPARVIT IOSEPH DICENS SVRGE ACCIPE PVERVMEP MATRE MEIVS ETFVGEINE GIPTVNFT ESTOIBIVS OEDVM DICAMTIBI MATHEI SEGVN DO CAPITVLO”. Central two-board panel depicts what appears to be Mary and Joseph, three children and three other figures bringing baskets of fruit. The left panel showing two figures with sunburst atop with dove. Right panel with baby being offered to a king with others beside. Panels are attached with cotter pin hinges. The piece appears very early, possibly prior to 1700 but we can not determine the age. SIZE: Central panel is 34-1/2″ x 31″. Side panels are 34-1/2″ x 15-1/2″. CONDITION: There is paint losses, uneven varnish layer. In need of restoration.
