ATTRIBUTED TO RUTH WHITTIER SHUTE (American, 1803-1882) PAIR OF NICHOLS FAMILY PORTRAITS. Oil on canvas portraits of a young man and woman. The man wears black coat and white shirt and his right hand holds a bible. The woman has black dress with lace collar and gold and black memorial pin. She has curly dark hair. Both are housed in identical gilt replacement wood frames which are signed “J. Golding Carver Guilder and Frame Maker, Springfield”. REFERENCE: The consignor, in July of 1992, showed the portraits to Helen Kellogg who made the attribution and these were thought to be of the Nichols Family of Enfield, New Hampshire, Circa 1836-38. Helen Kellogg is considered an authority on Shute. SIZE: 28” x 24”. CONDITION: Relined, restored with inpainting. 9-27358 (5,000-10,000)
