ABBOTT FULLER GRAVES (American, 1859-1936) HARBOR LOOKOUT. Outstanding oil on canvas summer scene shows two young ladies, one standing wearing pink dress and matching hat. The other seated beside with white dress, blue scarf and flower decorated hat. They look out over a blue harbor with sailboat racing by. A large town/city is in background with large center building. Other sailboats are seen against building. The women are surrounded by colorful tall flowers and they sit on a large granite outcropping. Signed lower right “Abbott Graves”. Housed in a gesso decorated gilt frame which is not original but period. To our knowledge, this painting has never been offered for sale and remains in its original untouched condition. The best Abbott Fuller Graves painting that we have seen. SIZE: 20” x 16”. CONDITION: Untouched, as found. PAUL STARRETT SAMPLE (American, 1896-1974) “COFFEE TIME IN AMERICA”. Outstanding large oil on canvas winter scene shows a gray house with porch having three men who have stopped by from hauling logs and are talking with the lady of the house who has a large coffee pot in her hands and holds open the door. The two-horse drawn log wagon is seen next to mailbox on road which leads into valley dotted with New England farm houses. Rolling hills under a gray sky. Signed lower left “Paul Sample”. Housed in its original decorated carved wood frame with linen liner. Titled in pencil and signed on back stretcher. Also the back of canvas has a 27th Annual Art Director’s Exhibition label under the classification of Advertising Art Submitted by Benton & Bowles. REFERENCE: This painting was used as the focal point in one of the “Part of the American Scene” Maxwell House Coffee print ads. “Coffee time is any time when neighbors pass a friendly house on a chill winter day. A Welcome interlude in a long, cold journey. And because Maxwell House is America’s favorite… coffee time is Maxwell House time wherever you go. Painted in the Vermont hills by Paul Sample”. A copy of this advertisement accompanies the painting. This is one of four paintings for this campaign. PROVENANCE: A General Foods commission from Benton & Bowles Agency. It hung behind the Maxwell House coffee product manager’s desk and upon retirement he was given the painting and it is being consigned by him and has never been offered on the market before.
