BERNARD LANGLAIS (American, 1923-1977) CARVED AND PAINTED WHALE PLAQUE. The cutout whale formed from a single wood plank uses the checked crack at one end as the mouth and a knot as the eye. The curving V-form tail cutout at end. Multiple paint layers indicate gray and white and two screw holes at center were used as mounting. PROVENANCE: This piece was given to our consignor by Bernice Abbott (famous Maine photographer) who purchased it directly from Bernard Langlais. The whale was affixed to Abbotts’ garden shed until it was removed by our consignors who worked for Bernice Abbott. She was known to have several pieces of wood sculptures adorning her garden area. A letter of provenance accompanies lot. SIZE: 86-1/2” l x 10-1/2” t. CONDITION: Weathered surface. The tail has a repair, otherwise good. 9-29991 (500-2,000)
