JOHN HENRY BROWN (American, 1818-1891) MINIATURE PORTRAIT OF MARIA CHARLOTTE GOUVENEUR. Oil on ivory portrait shows woman with curls in her brown hair topped by a lace bonnet. She wears a formal black dress with fancy lace trim. Signed lower left “J. Hy. Brown 1860”. Housed in its original leather velvet lined shadow box type frame. Inner gold oval brass frame. Frame is hinged and snaps shut similar to a daguerreotype case. Small tag accompanies miniature with name of sitter. Also, card that states “Case for Grandmother Caldwalader’s Miniature”. It is believed that the sitter married Thomas Calwalader. This artist also did a miniature of Abraham Lincoln in the same year as this portrait. SIZE: 3-3/4” x 3”.
