WINCHESTER MODEL 1866 SADDLE RING CARBINE. Cal. 44 center fire and rim fire. Early 2nd model 66 with 20” round bbl, full magazine having the integral sight and front band with two-position flip rear sight. Serial number is stamped on the left side of the lower tang and inside the toe of the buttplate. It has uncheckered wood with straight stock and crescent brass buttplate. The left side of the lower tang is also marked with a “CO” and “W” preceding the serial number. The left side of the receiver has a staple and ring. Traces of bbl markings are visible. SN 16491. CONDITION: Good to very good, Bbl and magazine tube and all the iron retains an even dark brown patina. The receiver shows moderate wear with slightly rounded edges, some light nicks and scratches on the left side and a few on the right side with battered screws. The receiver has a beautiful medium mustard patina with the buttplate a dark mustard patina. Wood is sound with a couple of grain checks near the toe, otherwise is dark and oil stained with small pinholes that may have been old tack holes. The forearm is slightly battered but sound. Bright shiny bore with scattered pitting. This is a fine early gun that likely would have seen extensive frontier service. 4-49963 JR222 (5,500-7,500)
