EARLY WINCHESTER MODEL 1866 LEVER-ACTION CARBINE. Cal. 44 RF Henry. Standard carbine with 20” round bbl, full magazine, bbl band with fixed integral front sight. Full buckhorn rear sight. The top of bbl has “Henry’s” and “King’s” patent markings. It had a plated receiver and uncheckered wood with straight stock and crescent buttplate. Contemporary additions include sling loops added to bbl band and stock, a staple and ring in the left side of the receiver. The trap contains a 3-piece iron and brass wiping rod. The serial number is found under the wood on the left side of the lower tang and again inside the toe of the buttplate. The stock does not have the serial number in the upper tang channel. It appears that a recent minor modification has been made inside the channel, which removed the serial number. Looking at the carbine, it is conceivable that this is the original stock and has been on this gun a very long time. From the James D. Gordon collection, the gun is pictured on pg. 58 of The Winchester Book by Madis. SN 15176. CONDITION: Good to very good. Traces of original finish remain on bbl and magazine tube and the two bbl bands with the remainder a silver-brown patina with scattered light surface rust spotting. The front sight has been modified. The lever and hammer dark brown patina with light surface pitting. The receiver, with modestly worn edges, retains 50-60% thin original plating. It has a few hammer marks on top of the left sideplate. The forearm has a hairline crack and the butt stock a couple of grain checks and retains a fine, old hand-rubbed patina, possibly a very old refinish. Strong dark bore. 4-50082 (8,000-12,000)
