ENGRAVED WINCHESTER MODEL 1866 CARBINE. Cal .44RF Henry. Rare Eastern carbine made without staple and saddle ring mounted on the left side of the receiver. It has standard 20” bbl with Winchester markings, full magazine with integral front sight and bbl band and two position flip rear sight. It has very nicely grained wood with straight stock and carbine buttplate with trap which contains a very fine, small, 3-pc hickory and iron wiping rod. The forearm band and buttstock have early factory sling loops. The receiver and buttplate tang are beautifully engraved in intertwining foliate arabesque and geometric patterns, full coverage on both sides of the receiver and top tang with about 50% coverage on top of the receiver. It has a mirror image foliate pattern on the bottom of the carrier and bottom of the receiver. This carbine is signed “C.F. ULRICH” on the lower tang adjacent to the serial number. The borders on this rifle are identical to the double chiseled wavy lines on a number of known pieces of Ulrich’s work pictured throughout the section on Conrad Ulrich in the book of “Winchester Engraving’ by R.L. Wilson. In addition, the scalloped border around the front edge of the receiver is very similar to one of his credited piece of work pictured on page 77 of the same book and again on page 82, and others. The engraver left geometric undecorated areas on both sides which further enhances the beauty of the surrounding engraving. SN 61217. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbl and magazine tube retains a dark plum brown patina with two or three small nicks and some rust pitting on the magazine tube near the tip of the forearm. The receiver retains 88-90% of its original bright nickel plating with a few small nicks on the left side plate and around the trigger pin. The buttplate retains about 75% strong original nickel plating. The lever retains about 80% original nickel finish with fine rust pitting in some of the exposed areas and the hammer about 85% original nickel. The wood is sound and has most of a fine professionally restored finish. Very strong bore with scattered moderate pitting. 4-50097 JR518 (25,000-35,000)
