SPECTACULAR JOHN ULRICH ENGRAVED WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 SADDLE RING CARBINE. Cal. 44 WCF. Fine second model carbine with screwed-on dust cover rail and impressed thumbprint dust cover, engraved by John Ulrich and pictured on page 152 of The Book of Winchester Engraving by R. L. Wilson. The receiver is engraved on the left sideplate with a vignette of a leaping white tail buck in a woodland scene. The rest of the sideplate is beautifully engraved with intertwining foliate arabesque patterns and dash and dot borders. The forward flats of both sides are engraved with intertwining Moorish diamond patterns and foliate arabesque patterns with corresponding dash and dot borders. The rear of the receiver on the left side is engraved around the screw holes and saddle ring staple with foliate arabesque patterns and dash and dot borders. The right sideplate has a vignette of a standing bull moose in a woodland scene with matching patterns surrounding, identical to the left sideplate. The rear of the right side of the receiver is identical to the left side with the addition of a beautiful half-circle with foliate scrolls at the bottom and a small blank faceted panel in the center. The top of the receiver, dust cover and top tang are sparsely engraved with fine foliate arabesque patterns. The bottom of the carrier and bottom of the receiver have mirror image foliate patterns and the serial number is enclosed in a nicely engraved ribbon. The buttplate tang is also engraved with fine arabesque and flower patterns. The receiver, dust cover, sideplates and buttplate are gold plated. Bbl, magazine tube, bbl bands, lever, lever lock, trigger, hammer, staple & ring and rear sight are all nickel-plated. The lower tang is signed, behind the trigger, “J. Ulrich”. The stock is highly figured crotch-cut walnut with matching grain forearm. It is accompanied by a Winchester letter dated November 10, 1980, completely identifying this carbine with gold and nickel and $6.50 engraving. It was shipped August 6, 1879 along with four others of the same specifications except somewhat different engraving values. SN 35248. CONDITION: Very fine, bbl and magazine tube retain about 85-90% strong bright original nickel with the flaked areas turned to patina. The sideplates retain traces of the original gold plating with the balance showing mostly the silver under plate and silver metal color. The receiver retains about 75-80% strong bright original gold plating with the worn areas showing the silver under plate and bare metal. The buttplate retains about 60% gold plating. Wood is sound with a minor grain check or two and retains most of its originals oil finish. Bright shiny bore.
