ANTHONY FIALA (Slovak American, 1869-1950) FOUR IMPORTANT PANORAMIC PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE ARCTIC. Framed blue and white images show different views of an Arctic expedition. 1) Line of sleds and sled dogs winding through snow and ice field. Signed lower left. Housed in a partial gilt molded wood frame. Appears to have water damage to bottom right. 2) Dark scene showing sled dog on ice field with bright sun low in the sky. Signed lower left. Also marked “Copyright 1906 A. Fiala”. Very good condition. 3) Two sled teams on snow field approaching snow covered rocks. Signed lower right and “Terra Nova”. Very good condition. 4) Three sled teams going through snow and ice field. Signed lower left “82? North”. Tear through corner of margin. The last three images are housed in identical decorated molded wood frames. Anthony Fiala was hired as photographer in the Baldwin-Ziegler expedition of 1901-02 then appointed leader of Ziegler’s next expedition in 1903-05. Neither expedition made it to the Pole but Fiala was credited with being the first to take moving pictures of the Arctic region. IMAGES SIZE: 10” x 33-3/4”. CONDITION: As noted above.
