MARTIALLY MARKED MODEL 1860 HENRY RIFLE. Cal .44RF Henry. Standard rifle with 24-1/4” oct bbl with integral magazine tube, German silver front sight and 900 yard ladder rear sight. It has straight grain walnut stock with the early rounded heel brass buttplate with trap. The trap contains an original 4-pc hickory and iron wiping rod. The right side of the receiver and correspondingly on bbl have inspector marks of “HH” on the receiver, “C.G.C.” and ”H” on bbl. The right of the wrist has a legible “C.G.C.”oval cartouche. The serial number is found under the wood on the left side of the lower tang, in the top tang channel on the stock and again inside the toe of the buttplate. There is a large crude “M” scratched in the finish on the left side of the buttstock. This rifle’s serial number is consistent with other known Henry rifles that were issued to the 3rd Veteran Volunteers near the end of the Civil War. It apparently was part of their enlistment agreement that if they maintained their rifles in good order during their term of service they could retain them when they mustered out. SN 3957. CONDITION: Very fine, all matching. Bbl and magazine tube retain a beautiful even, smooth plum brown patina with a couple of minor nicks and some very fine rust spotting. The receiver and sideplates are a medium dark, undisturbed mustard patina with some light hammer marks on the top of the left sideplate. The lever and hammer are also a dark patina. The screws are all fine with the hammer and stock screws retaining much original finish. The lever screw and timing screws are slightly battered. The stock has some small chipping at the toe with numerous small nicks and scratches, mostly in the finish, with a couple of deeper scratches on the right side and a 1/4” round bruise. It retains about 75% original finish under a coating of old applied varnish. The buttplate is smooth with matching patina. Strong bright bore with scattered fine pitting. 4-50166 JR521 (40,000-65,000)
