CASED ENGRAVED SMITH & WESSON NO. 2 ARMY REVOLVER. Cal .32RF. Very early Type III No.2 Army with 6” keyhole bbl, German silver front sight and 2-pc rosewood grips. It is beautifully engraved in early style with fine intertwined foliate arabesque patterns on the sides of the frame and the sides of bbl lug. The entire side flats over the length of bbl are wonderfully engraved with an intertwining braided pattern. The chamber end of bbl and frame, along with the backstrap and butt are nicely engraved with arabesque patterns. The cylinder has about 50% coverage engraving of abrabesque patterns and diamond & dot cross-hatching. All of the engraving has fine punch-dot background. It is accompanied by its original compartmented walnut casing with dark rose colored velvet lining that contains an original wood handle brass wiping rod and a very rare American Metallic Ammunition Co. black label empty 2-pc box for 50 No.42 Metallic cartridges. The label also states that they were “MANUFACTURED EXPRESSLY FOR/THE EAGLE ARMS CO.’S PATENT REVOLVER”. Benson Ford of the Ford Family, John Ottemon Collection. SN 5071. CONDITION: Extremely fine, all matching including the grips. It retains 96-98% strong bright original blue overall with some flaking on the cylinder and thinning on the backstrap. The hammer retains 95-97% bright original case colors. Mechanics are fine with brillant shiny bore and very minor pitting near the muzzle. The case is extremely fine with a grain check in the lid and numerous small nicks and scratches and a series of four or five small cuts. The lining is slightly faded with minor wear spots from the gun. The wiping rod is fine. Cartridge box has a beautiful label almost completely intact with one or two tiny chips. The body of the box retains most of its brown and yellow marbled paper. 4-49446 (22,500-32,500)
