OUTSTANDING DAGESTAN ORIENTAL RUG. Five differently-colored octagons on a dark blue ground covered overall with fantasy figures, dates, and people surrounded by a modified Kufic border. This stunning bit of creativity is dated repeatedly “1313” in the Moslem calendar (1894 in the Christian calendar). The weaver has used a veritable palette of dyes available to the market to create a fantasy world of saddled horses, birds, running beasts, peacocks, women in tribal dress, strange human figures, a clock telling time, combs signifying cleanliness for prayer, and other wild and diverse symbols. It is a fantasy world, private to the weaver, but enthusiastic in the imagery it shares with us. No other contemporary weaving similar is known to exist. SIZE: 12 ft 7 in x 5 ft.
