SIGNED (Australian, Late 19th Century) SHIP PORTRAIT OF THE AUSTRALIAN STEAMSHIP “WARRNAMBOOL”. Watercolor scene shows a single center stack three-mast steamship traveling right to left having sails up and smoke billowing from the stack. Five life boats are on decks and eleven people are seen on board. Light blue to dark blue white capped waves all under a blue and white cloud sky. The watercolor is mounted on a cardboard matte with hand colored title of the ship in a blue ribbon and a mast with anchor below. Back of the board “JD Castle Wanaka Edgecliff RA Woollahra Sydney, 1899”. Also on back in old pen “W. Mallett”. We do not know if the artist is JD Castle or W. Mallett. Unframed. SIZE: 13-1/4” x 18-3/4”. Total is 20” x 26-3/4”. CONDITION: Overall foxing, fair to good with stain to outside matte. 9-72482 (2,000-4,000)
