SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1871 ROLLING BLOCK RIFLE. Cal .50. 36” round bbl. Standard configuration with elevating rear bbl sight, Bulbous cleaning rod, 2 bbl bands and sling swivels. Bbl bands marked “U”, rear bbl band also marked “A”. Good strong “ELA” cartouch at left wrist, slightly off-center small cartouch at bottom of butt stock, crisp, but not legible. Strong shiny bore. Some 10,000 of these rifles were produced at Springfield under royalty agreement with Remington. CONDITION: Very good plus, overall. Receiver retains most of its cased finish although the colors are faded except in protected areas, the remainder turned a gray-brown patina. The bbl has is bright with a thin smooth brown patina. The tang screw is boogered. The wood is excellent, with lots of open grain showing. There is a thin 1” chip at the nose cap, and a thin 2” gouge in the same area, as well as normal little handling marks. Action is fine. A little-used rifle in wonderful condition. 4-49601 (1,250-1,600)
