RARE AND IMPORTANT CAPTAIN HOSEA C. WYMAN CIVIL WAR BALTIMORE ALBUM QUILT. This outstanding example decorated with fourteen border square panels, a large central panel with two squares below. Central large panel having a five-pointed blue star with inner white and red star. Between the upper two points is a red, white and blue American shield with owner’s name “Capt. H C Wyman” and “Baltimore M.D 1863”. Right side having an American flag having star shaped field having four stars in corners. Left of American flag having crossed cannons with cannon balls. Below star on left is a displayed red eagle with blue banner in beak. Right side with a large red anchor with blue chain. Below this panel are two square panels, one with orange pot of flowers and cornucopias, the other red and yellow tulips with green leaves. Outside panels include four wreaths of red and yellow tulips; Panel with rust colored house, birds on fence and flowers signed “A.B.H.”; Another panel with spread wing eagle holding flowering branch with decorative banner above; Another panel with colorful cornucopia of fruit and flowers; Panel with red flowers and birds; Panel with golden urn with flower vine; Another with a green leaf heart with red dots; Panel with stylized sheaf of wheat in green, yellow and red; Panel with opposing green and red leaves; Panel with a fruit tree with red fruit and yellow birds; and a panel with a spray of red green stemmed flowers. Appliqué work on white linen with no quilting, bound at edges with a center stitched linen backing. Colors are bright and vivid. SIZE: 81″ h x 64″ w. PROVENANCE: Made by the Captains wife, Judith Dicks Wyman and handed down through the family to our present consignor. According to family history, Capt. Wyman was lost at sea in 1879 along with his son, Clifford Wyman. CONDITION: Light stains to front which should come out in cleaning, structurally very good with no rips or tears, some minor imperfections and some additional water stains on reverse. 9-92208 (10,000-20,000)
