EARLY AMERICAN POWDER HORN. Green-bodied horn, about 10” long with decorated stepped wooden plug, secured with four large brass tacks. The spout end has a screw-on threaded tip with an original hand-whittled small plug. The base plug has a hand-forged loop that is replacing the original staple and there is a staple on the side at the spout end. The body of the horn is scrimshawed “FREEMONT/EXPEDITION” and has the date “1843”. It has a small map that appears to be a large body of water surrounded by marshy areas which is scrimshawed in the middle ‘SALT LAKE”. CONDITION: Fine, smooth dark patina, chipped and dinged plug with the spout end chipped. We guarantee that the horn is old, but cannot certify the authenticity or originality of the scrimshaw work. 4-49188 (2,000-3,000)
